It can easily be adjusted for various user needs. I like the way it builds on its self naturally guiding the user into proper paragraph format. Love the recording capability as it helps students to hear if they are putting the sentence together the way they think they are. This also can be used for several users to work together to create a story. For those with speech difficulties it can be helpful for them to hear sentences as they speak them. Easy to use, fully adjustable and a proven formula for learning make this a must have app! My kids love recording their own voices telling the story and therefore are engaged in the process of story development as never before. As with all Mobile Education Store apps, this app is customizable to fit the needs of multiple students at many different skill levels. Mobile Education has created the perfect app for you!! I like the colorful picture scenes that go with the sentences and the ability for the student to be able to record his responses. This gives them automatic feedback!! It is especially nice when they can listen to their own story play back! Way to go, Mobile Ed!!! ### 5/5 — Like this app *2012-08-21, version 1.7* We just started using this app to reinforce our grade 2 ELA homeschooling curriculum and I couldn't be more pleased. Stepping through the story with question prompts about the pictures has really helped my child think understand the who, what, when, where, why, and how of story telling. And as she becomes more adept at story building, we can drop the prompts and she can record stories about pictures without them. I was using this app today and realized with much dismay that there are NO people of color in any of the pictures. The same is true in your Story Builder app which has cartoon drawings. This just downgraded my opinion of the appropriateness of this activity for my students. ### 1/5 — Not good at all *2012-10-25, version 1.7* Don't wast the money. ### 2/5 — Very Versatile! *2011-12-01, version 1.6* As a new speech pathologist working in an elementary school, I am always on the hunt for versatile, fun, cost-effective therapy materials. StoryBuilder fits the bill! I have used this app to target WH questions, inferencing/predicting, describing, grammar, sentence formation and even fluency. The voice recording provides valuable feedback to the students and is a helpful way to monitor progress. I look forward to using more of these apps! ### 3/5 — Culturally & experience biased *2012-03-17, version 1.6* I love the idea of this app but it could use some improvements. One of the picture prompts had fireworks and asked what day of the year it was. To anyone who is unfamiliar with Independence Day, this would be a confusing question, and that's the reaction I noticed. Also, another prompt had a boy in a river, holding on to a tree so he wouldn't get swept over the waterfall. I understand how this could develop into a creative story for some, but it made the 3 year old confused & her response was that the boy was in the bath tub. I feel like the picture cues and questions could be improved by having some more baseline experiences represented. I'm having better luck creating story boards on pinterest and developing my own questions than using this app for language development with underexposed children. ### 3/5 — Some features not implemented yet? *2010-12-06, version 1.4* We're reviewing this app for potential use in a speech & hearing clinic. We like the 3 levels, the ability to record and playback speech, and the settings that a teacher/parent/clinician could adjust. Our 3-star rating is based on the abstract quality of some of the cartoon pictures and difficulty of some contexts (such as an adult surprise party). We would increase rating to 4 stars if some features are implemented (see below). In the iTunes description, the feature list includes storying narratives for future playback and also e-mailing stories. Are these features implemented in the current version, and if so how are they accessed? We have read the instructions/info page. The idea of letting the child record their voice and play it back cements the structure of the sentences in their heads and yet does this in a fun and easy way so they don't lose interest. I use it in the setting where the students are guided through a series of open ended questions supported by colorful pictures that evoke a story. Students record their answers. What comes out is a recording of the student telling a story that can be archived as a language sample and used to inform my instruction. My daughter loves telling stories but struggles with putting it all together: writing them in pararaph form. Book reports are a struggle. I know that as we work more with this app, she'll learn this skill in no time. She has receptive language delay and auditory processing disorder. Hearing the story in her own voice is amazing. It's a great tool to help young children learn how to put multiple sentences together to form their own story. And this app is so affordable, which makes it all the more wonderful! Stories can be easily created by students who have difficulty writing or who are just learning what it takes to write a story. I used this with my sped class and will be using it with my kindergarten kids this year! It will show a picture and you answer "what are they doing" or "what were they doing before the picture". This app is engaging and can keep his interest longer than most of his LA workbooks. When he has had it with his 1st grade workbooks, I can always get him to work on the iPad for a little while longer. Mine really loved hearing themselves. It's an excellent tool for teaching paragraph structure and freedom in using adjectives to make the story more interesting. It's a wonderful supplement for creative writing. The tutorials guide you through the app step by step with clear directions on how to use the app. The pictures are clear and uncluttered. The option to repeat the question is great for children who need wait time for extra processing time. Parents of young children or nonverbal children can record their voices which will encourage speech.
