## What is Storyline?

Storyline is a writing studio for people whose words are confidential by law: clinicians, lawyers, journalists, and anyone who cannot paste sensitive work into a cloud chatbot. Your document, your research, and every AI conversation live encrypted on your device and sync only through your own iCloud, never a server we own. There is no account and there are no servers, so there is nothing to leak.

On-device AI, by default. For privileged work the AI runs right on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone and physically cannot reach a cloud model. Turn on Prefer on-device and Storyline uses a model on your device first, a model on a nearby device of yours second, and the cloud only if you allow it, with your own OpenAI, Anthropic, or Ollama key.

An AI co-author that thinks before it writes. Ask it to continue a passage, draft from an outline, argue a point differently, or pressure-test a weak paragraph. It plans its approach, drafts, then checks and revises its own work, and every suggestion arrives as a branch you adopt or discard. Nothing touches your page until you say so.

Dictate anywhere. A private, on-device voice keyboard turns speech into text with no upload, on the page or in almost any field. Everything you say collects in an editable panel and only lands when you tap Done, so a pause never drops a word.

Research without leaving your draft. Drop a link, a PDF, a note, or a spoken thought into one capture bar and it is read, transcribed on device, filed, and summarized. Sources you import are kept encrypted on your device. Select a phrase and Storyline searches the web and hands back cited notes, with a screen on every outbound query so your protected names and facts never ride along, and a guard that warns when a run of searches starts to reveal what you are working on.

EVERYTHING IN ONE PLACE
- A focused editor with snapshots, branches, and full version history
- On-device Apple Intelligence and local models, plus your own OpenAI, Anthropic, or Ollama keys when you want them
- A research desk that imports pages, PDFs, and audio, transcribes on device, and clips cited evidence into your draft
- Export any note as a password-protected archive, and pull the citations, claims, and follow-up topics out of a document in one tap
- A knowledge base for the people, places, and structure of your work, in your field's own words, across ten writing registers

PRIVATE BY ARCHITECTURE, NOT BY POLICY
- End-to-end encryption behind a passphrase and a Face ID or Touch ID vault
- Imported research kept encrypted on your device, decrypted only when you open or export it
- Both directions observed: outbound crossings screened and logged verbatim, inbound content screened before your AI reads it
- A search guard that warns before a pattern of queries reveals your line of work
- Data flow, per project: see exactly what left and what came back
- Privileged projects can never use a cloud model

YOURS ACROSS DEVICES
- One purchase covers iPhone, iPad, and Mac
- Sync through your private iCloud, encrypted in transit and at rest
- Hand a heavy run to a stronger device on your Wi-Fi and watch it stream back

Storyline does not watch you write. No tracking, no ads, no account on our servers, because there are no servers. Just you, your words, and tools that respect them.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.2.1 — 2026-07-24

A security and privacy release.

Hardened throughout. A full security review pass, encrypted sync between your own devices, stronger key derivation on every outbound path, and a stronger password envelope for protected exports.

Your research stays yours. Sources you import are now kept and encrypted on your device, and you can export any note as a password-protected archive. Pull the citations, claims, and follow-up topics out of a document in one tap.

Search the web without giving yourself away. The web-search screen shows the exact words that would leave and lets you edit or generalise them on your device, and a new guard warns when a run of searches starts to reveal what you are working on. Turn on Keep research on this device for confidential work.

Speaks your profession. Storyline now uses the right words for your work: a lawyer sees sections, parties, and issues; a clinician sees notes and people; a novelist keeps scenes, characters, and plot beats. Fields adapt too, so you are never asked for a physical description on a legal party.

Read aloud, cleaned up. The voice list now shows real voices only, one entry each at its best quality, your own Personal Voice first. Also fixes a rare hang when stopping playback.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-07-19

### 1.1.0 — 2026-07-17

Dictation, reimagined. The on-device voice keyboard now uses Whisper by default for sharper transcription, and it never loses a word: everything you say collects in an editable panel and only lands when you tap Done. Fix a word by hand, or tap Polish for a one-tap on-device cleanup. And you can now dictate into almost any field, not just the page.

A simpler first run, and smarter agents. Setup is now one short guided flow into your first page, with an optional studio to set up your AI in one place. The writing agents think before they write, you can tell Storyline to prefer models that run on your device, and a model on another of your devices is used automatically when it is nearby.

A smarter Research desk. One capture bar takes a link, a file, a note, or a spoken thought and files it for you. The desk opens to a live digest of your sources, and you can cite a note straight into your draft, with the notes about what you are writing surfaced first.

Clearer settings and a working font picker. Every setting now explains what it does, and the font applies live across the whole app.

Plus a fix for a launch crash some users hit. Everything still runs on device; nothing leaves without your say.

### 1.0.1 — 2026-07-15

Storyline 1.0.1 makes research real, gives you your voice, and fits more kinds of writing.

- Real web research. Select a phrase and Storyline now runs a true web search and hands back cited, real sources. No API key is needed to search, and it uses your own OpenAI or Anthropic key when you add one.

- A voice keyboard. Tap the mic for a full dictation panel: a live waveform, running transcription, pause and resume, and one-tap line and paragraph breaks. It types straight into your note, on device. Nothing is uploaded.

- Four new registers. Fiction, Screenwriting, Marketing, and Technical join the six, each with its own agents, snippets, and vocabulary, in a rebuilt picker that shows exactly what each one sets up.

- Privacy you can watch, both ways. Every research query is screened before it leaves and reduced to a few generic keywords, so your draft never rides along. Your Data flow ledger now has two columns, what left and what came back, so you can read both halves of every crossing. Vault projects stay on device unless you approve each one.

- Faster and steadier. A calmer research panel that keeps your work if you step away, a fix for a sync issue that could balloon memory and heat up your Mac, several dictation fixes, and one-tap ways to repair or pause sync if it ever gets stuck.

Thank you for writing with us. Tell us what you would like next.
