If I approach a marshal with any piece other than a spy, it will ignore it more often than not, but when I approach with a spy, it attacks 100% of the time. Similarly, most other pieces with run away when approached by an unknown piece, but will attack a spy without hesitation. It’s just not that fun playing against an opponent like that where they are cheating and toying with you to let you win. ### 2/5 — As others have said *2022-06-21, version 1.10.07* The AI knows your layout on the highest difficulty. It’s literally impossible to get its Marshall with a spy. They navigate through bombs to your flag…. I have never had an AI piece killed by a bomb… ever…. ### 3/5 — Update it please *2022-02-15, version 1.10.07* It would be good if it had 2 things, 1. A custom game where you can pass and play. It wouldn’t be a big deal if the AI didn’t actively abuse this, as they know that once you move a certain way too many times their path is clear. Doesn’t make sense, and seems like a huge oversight in what could be a great app for a great game. Should be five stars, but since I paid for it, it’s a two. ### 3/5 — Outdated *2020-11-28, version 1.10.07* Screen doesn’t fit on my iPhone XS. AI is also infuriating, constantly going back and forth. You are forced to play the setup my iPad picks. It totally avoids my bombs. I actually built a wall of bombs with one slot around and not one piece, not even a scout, hit a bomb. Wait till they fix this before purchasing. How is it the AI--when playing on the hardest level--always seems to know where you've hidden your Spy; or is never locked-off from a move (e.g., red highlighted space) due to consistent back-and-forth manouvers? Update 5/13: While I appreciate the three or so updates over the past month (having gone without any updates for more than 3 years), the artificial intelligence (or "computer") opponent, when playing on the hardest setting, is permitted an unlimited number of back-and-forth moves in the same two spaces; whereas than the human player is afforded apx. two. How can the Developer justify this? The computer and the human players must be able to play by the same rules, and on a level playing field, or the game will continue to periodically receive a decreased rating from me. ### 4/5 — Good but last update lousy *2019-04-16, version 1.10.02* This has been a favorite and a great game until the last update when the landscape capability was removed. Now it only plays in portrait mode on the iPad. I would give it 5 stars but all of a sudden, it only loads in portrait. And yes, my screen rotation lock is off. What gives? ### 1/5 — DO NOT BUY!!! *2019-02-16, version 1.3.9* This game is a total sham, no fun to play at all. At low and medium difficulty the enemy is completely inept and i think it might be impossible to lose. On the difficult setting the increased difficulty is not due to a more capable enemy, but due to direct knowledge of your game piece locations. At this difficulty I have never once killed an enemy with a bomb - enemy pieces easily navigate through large blocks of unmoved pieces, destroying any lower ranked piece and circumnavigating every untested bomb. Will ask for my money back for sure. AVOID! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Not Worth It *2023-01-18, version 1.10.07* No ads so it would be worth it if the game quality was higher. Quick battle is a bit fun and quick. Problem is the AI. On normal the opponent attacks your random units with their Spy. All this does is take away their ability to counter your 10. On normal and hardest difficult it seems the AI mostly just moves their units around randomly so you’re always having to be on the offensive. Makes it boring, especially if you set up a good defense. There’s an ad for multiplayer at the top, but it says it’s not available in my region. Oh well. The AI also attacked my 7 with a 4, then a 6 two turns later. It already forgot? This was under highest difficulty available. AI is severely lacking. It is also incredibly stupid that you can’t chase after their troops by going back and forth - but they can run away by moving back and forth more than you can. So there’s a rule in place against you, but not the opponent. Main issue is still the AI though, it’s incredibly boring to play. Waste of money. ### 1/5 — A bit lazy *2022-10-07, version 1.10.07* The AI doesn’t attack. If you don’t attack the game would literally go on forever because the AI only has one strategy, Sit there and wait for you to come to attack. Seams lazy. ### 1/5 — Pathetic AI *2021-10-23, version 1.10.07* The AI will not form an attack plan. It only counter punches. This makes it very easy to control the game. Don’t want them to come through a side? Just don’t move pieces on that side and the AI won’t even test the waters. Multi player would be the only way to ever get a challenge. ### 1/5 — Cheating AI *2021-10-17, version 1.10.07* The AI in this game is so bad it takes the fun out of it. If your pieces rank is higher the AI will move lower rank guys out of the way. The AI will also avoid bombs and send bomb diffusers right to unexposed bombs. Don’t even try to take their general as it will move always away from your spy and the game won’t let you move back and forth twice but the computer certainly can. Needs an AI update with more than just knowing where all your pieces are. ### 1/5 — Trash bot system *2021-08-09, version 1.10.07* The bots only move one piece back and forth they do not make any attempt to make an attack and will run away anytime you get your pieces close. ### 1/5 — Lame *2021-07-07, version 1.10.07* After playing the multiplayer version for years, which recently shut down, this version is horrible. Can somebody explain to me how the single player version hasn’t updated in two years, but the multiplayer version, which doesn’t work, updated July 3rd? ### 1/5 — Not worth it *2021-03-26, version 1.10.07* I downloaded the app because it said it had a link for multiplayer. The game limits how many times you can move back and forth but not the computer making it impossible to catch your opponent and the computer plays the game as if it already knows where your pieces are, how to move and avoid your bombs and Generals and that gets frustrating. Makes the game just very annoying to play after a while. The AI will NEVER attack a piece like a normal player would, unless it’s equal to or less than in rank. Takes all the fun out of it. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Highly Addictive *2021-04-06, version 1.10.07* I find this version of Stratego highly addictive. The Dutch designers have done a great job. Some spelling errors in the campaign briefings should be corrected. AI difficulty at the hardest level is good although a good player should have no difficulty with it in battle mode. Campaigns are a different matter; Player is outnumbered and outranked in several scenarios which makes for interesting challenges. Sound effects are good, as are the graphics. Overall a satisfying purchase. ### 5/5 — Play the game first! *2018-03-10, version 1.3.9* People Yes you can set up the board the way you want it, and you can also change the settings where the Marshall is 1, General 2, and so on. Suffice it to say I agree with all the other suggestions. Good play. Decent AI. Good graphics. It would be nice to have some of the original board game options built in as options to select in the digital version. It would really be nice to see the opponent’s board after a game. Don’t stop. A few easy fixes and this is a five star review. ### 4/5 — Great! But... *2020-02-17, version 1.10.07* There needs to be an ability to pass the phone or tablet and play with a friend. Also, there should be a game end reveal of the the board as that’s something I enjoy about the board game. ### 4/5 — Like the board game *2019-11-12, version 1.10.07* This game is just like the board game. You can manually place your pieces. The campaign is pretty easy, I completed it in about 1hr or less. But the AI in the battle mode (board game mode) is good. I have a strategy that I have never lost with so I am undefeated against the AI but the put up a good battle, having said that they are a very defensive AI. They don’t attack much. So if your game play is defensive it could be a long game. I found them to be very smart with their Marshall and makes it hard for the spy to attack it. So in that case is why I say the AI is good. All in all a good game just like the classic board game. Ps. You can have the pieces numbered increasing or decreasing in the options menu. ### 4/5 — Love the game, but it needs just afew tweaks here and there: *2019-05-12, version 1.10.06* Game, LOVE effects, LOVE but i have some things you might wanna fix, #1. AN UNDO BUTTON!!! I know that sounds like something I shouldn’t have put in all capitals and maybe I shouldn’t have but i’ve made some plans playing the game and as i’m about to hit the square i want to move to I accidentally hit the square i didn’t want to hit and instead of it takeing me 1 turn to get to the square i want it takes 3! #2. I love doing campaigns on here they’re really fun like “napoleon’s waterloo” or “the fall of baron” and my thing is there are only 2 i think there should be atleast 4! And when i want to redo the campaign i push next and it doesn’t even give me the next battle! #3. Again about campaigns I don’t like how they criticize you after you did your best to win! Especially in “napoleon’s waterloo” napoleon criticizes you like CRAZY becase you try your best to win and then you lose then he pops up and says “my plan was flawless you just didn’t execute it properly” or something really annoying. so i’d like for you to consider these changes and please fix atleast 1 or 2 of them Thank you. ### 4/5 — Needs to be harder.
