## What is StripPii?

Redaction that actually removes the words.

Most tools draw a black box over text that is still in the file. Copy and paste from the "redacted" PDF and the name is right there. StripPii removes the text itself - what comes out has nothing underneath the black.

Nothing leaves your device. Ever.

StripPii makes no network requests at all. It holds no network permission. There are no servers, no accounts, no analytics, no crash reporting. Your bank statements, medical letters and passport scans are read on your device and stay there - not as a policy, but because the app is technically incapable of doing otherwise.

Finds what matters, in any language.

Names, addresses, emails, phone numbers, dates of birth, passport and licence numbers, national IDs, card and account numbers, medical record numbers - and faces in photos, covered automatically.

An on-device machine-learning model reads names and addresses that have no fixed shape to match, in any of the languages it was trained on. Exact patterns handle the things that do - the ones with checksums, like an IBAN or a National Insurance number. Each catches what the other cannot.

On devices with Apple Intelligence, an extra on-device pass runs alongside. Also local. Also free.

Detection is the same whether you pay or not.

Every PII type. The AI. The lot. We are not going to find less of your personal data because you have not paid us.

You decide before anything is redacted.

Review every detection, with a label saying how it was found. Deselect anything that shouldn't go. Black out anything the app missed by hand. StripPii remembers what you confirmed, so the next document is faster.

### 5/5 — Free version does not work well

*2026-08-27*

I thought I would try the free version to see how well it worked before committing to purchasing and I am glad I did. It doesn’t work well at all. Couldn’t recognize basic things like SSN, phone number or names.

UPDATE: Thank you for responding. I gave this another try and it seems to work very well now that the limitations on the free version have been lifted. I didn’t realize that the free version had all of those functions turned off. Sure will make redaction a much easier task for me.

**Developer response:** You were right, and thank you for saying so plainly.
At the time you tried it, the free version had most detection types switched off - including Social Security numbers, phone numbers and names. That was a bad decision on my part: it meant people testing StripPii watched it miss obvious things and reasonably concluded it didn't work. You were never seeing what the app could actually do.
I've changed it. Detection is now identical in free and paid - every type, including on-device AI, with nothing held back. Paying now gets you more documents, more file formats and a clean export, not better results.
If you're willing to give it another try, the current version should show you what it should have shown you the first time. If it still misses something, I'd genuinely like to hear about it.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.1.2 — 2026-08-31

Share Straight to StripPii
You can now send files to StripPii from other apps. In Files, Photos, Mail, or almost anywhere else, tap Share and pick StripPii. it'll be waiting the next time you open the app. Nothing leaves your device.

Better Name Redaction
Fixed a bug where a name StripPii had already blacked out once could still slip through later in the same document. for example if it appeared without a nearby ID number, or was buried inside a long sentence. Now it's caught everywhere.

### 2.0.6 — 2026-08-26

A clearer free watermark
Free exports now carry a visible watermark across the page. It used to be faint enough to miss, which wasn't honest about the difference between free and Pro. Detection is unchanged - free finds exactly what Pro finds, and always will.

Password-protected PDFs, now free
Open and redact a locked PDF without Pro. Enter the password once — it's used in the moment and never stored. Keeping the exported copy protected is still Pro.

Your details now add to detection
Telling StripPii your own email, phone or date of birth used to narrow detection to just that value, so filling in your email quietly stopped other people's addresses being found. Your details are now added to what the app already looks for, never in place of it. If you'd entered any of these, please check your next document.

A simpler settings screen
Redaction settings is now your details and a plain summary of what StripPii looks for. One phone number no longer has to be entered six times, once per country.

A dictionary you can search
Saved words are grouped by kind, with redacted and ignored on separate tabs. Nothing was changed or lost.

A quieter app
Removed the match counters and "last matched" dates from settings. They recorded how you used the app without telling you anything useful, which isn't something a privacy app should do.

Plus: redacted images now carry the same watermark treatment as PDFs, batch handles password-protected PDFs correctly, and the AI indicator is calmer and respects Reduce Motion.

### 1.2.5 — 2026-08-11

Open and redact password-protected PDFs. Enter the password once to unlock - it's used only in the moment and never stored - then redact as usual. You choose whether the exported copy stays password-protected.

See What Was Detected, and Why
The review screen now shows how each word was found - a built-in pattern (with its specific type, like Email or SSN), your saved words, a custom keyword, or on-device AI - each with a clear icon and caption.

Faster & Lighter
PII detection is noticeably faster and now runs in the background, so the app stays responsive on large documents, with lower memory use during batch redaction.

As always, all detection and redaction happen entirely on your iPhone and iPad. Nothing is ever uploaded.

### 1.2.4 — 2026-07-28

AI-Enhanced Detection (Pro)
On-device Apple Intelligence now finds names and contextual PII that pattern matching can miss - processed entirely on your device, nothing uploaded. Runs on devices that support Apple Intelligence.

Improved Accuracy
Smarter detection on forms and structured documents, with far fewer false detections cluttering your review.

Plus general reliability fixes and refinements throughout the app.

As always: 100% offline. Your documents never leave your device.

### 1.1.24 — 2026-06-16

Rotated Redaction
You can now rotate manually drawn redaction boxes to cover text that sits at an angle. When you tap a detected word, the box automatically aligns to match the text tilt no manual adjustment needed.

Image Export Fix
Fixed a bug where exported photos could show the original unredacted image instead of the redacted version when EXIF metadata stripping was active.

Bug fixes and stability improvements.
