### 3/5 — Capable app

*2026-08-03, version 1.65.0*

Capable app with well designed UI although the free version spams with self promotion and the pro version is too expensive if you don’t need any of the advanced features. Seems to have lost its ability to read my files in Dropbox via files - was working great now it’s got some weirdly cached copy after an iOS upgrade

### 4/5 — Almost Awesome

*2026-07-31, version 1.65.0*

Checks all the boxes for an off-cloud password-manager which synchronizes between devices (all offline on local network). Would have rated it 5 stars EXCEPT it has this very irritating issue where it constantly loses track that I’ve purchased the Pro version (required for syncing) and refuses to sync. Restoring the license always fails on first try. Fortunately, it works on second try. But I’m growing weary of telling it over and over and over that I have a Pro License when it forgets and refuses to sync.

### 4/5 — Latest version locking up Safari when the database is not opened.

*2026-07-06, version 1.64.2*

On the latest version I am finding that Safari is locking up with the spinning wheel of Strongbox overlayed on the browser, whenever trying to autofill and the strongbox database is locked. Has happened twice so far, just today.

### 4/5 — Constantly prompted to upgrade

*2026-07-04, version 1.64.1*

This would be perfect if it weren’t for the near constant full screen prompts to upgrade to the pro version that get in the way when you’re trying to quickly look up a password or account.

### 5/5 — Better than others

*2026-06-19, version 1.64.1*

Been browsing for awhile and glad to have landed here

### 3/5 — Nag Nag Nag

*2026-05-26, version 1.64.1*

Uninstalling as I have to close up to three nagging upgrade/pro/subscription messages every time.

### 4/5 — Secure & Simple

*2026-05-19*

Reliable password manager with a clean interface and strong security. Easy to use for managing accounts safely.

### 5/5 — Fantastic Security

*2026-05-11, version 1.64.1*

Never felt more secure while having randomized passwords from strongbox

### 3/5 — Have had Pro for years, now hassled to upgrade

*2026-04-19, version 1.64.2*

I don’t know what is going on behind the scenes since Strongbox was sold by the original developer. My facts are that I have a pro account and yet keep getting bothered to upgrade. I will reassess the 3 star (previously 5 star) ranking if they fix this bug which feels designed to build revenue rather than serve existing clients.

Besides this new concern, I continue to love the product.

### 5/5 — Been using for years!

*2026-04-12, version 1.64.2*

I don't think I've written a review, but I've been using Strongbox on my Mac and iPhone for years! It just works with no problem and syncs great over iCloud. I originally picked Strongbox because it used open source password formats so I wouldn't be locked in if I didn't like it. While I still appreciate that feature, I don't see any reason why I'll have to take advantage of it!

### 2/5 — Non-Functional and paywalled security keys

*2026-04-08, version 1.64.1*

App keeps unlocking databases with a security key behind a monthly paywall. Tried it, wasn’t able to get my FIPS 140-2 Yubikey to work.

### 2/5 — Lags, annoys with Pro.

*2026-04-02*

Title

### 4/5 — Best KeepassXC alternative on macOS

*2026-03-15, version 1.60.35*

I have used strongbox for at least a year and half and almost forgot about the existence of it. Everything just feels so native and seamless. One of the sweetest functionality is passkey native integration. KeepassXC just couldn’t get their browser integration right, to use passkey I have to often restart kpxc. But with strongbox there’s no such problem.

### 4/5 — Great password manager (pushy on the subscriptions tho)

*2026-03-09, version 1.64.1*

Already on Pro yet still getting prompted to upgrade multiple times while using the app.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — very bad

*2026-08-09*

How dare you guys to charge people such a high price for this rubbish app. even need to pay for downloading icons, what the heck! And Real bad ui

### 1/5 — Nagware

*2026-07-17, version 1.65.0*

Constant nags. New version forces you to sign up for a trial in order to activate on first install. Keepassium is less trash.

### 1/5 — Dev sold out

*2026-07-09, version 1.64.1*

App is now owned by a company

### 1/5 — This review is required by Strongbox as part of the student license application process.

*2026-06-10, version 1.64.2*

I will update this review based on my feelings about the app after I’ve actually gotten to use it.

### 1/5 — Used to be great, crashes making it unusable

*2026-05-05, version 1.64.2*

I used it many years and it had always been rock solid. Now with the latest version I accidentally nuked a folder with passwords (not in its backups anymore) and as I was trying to look through some database files, the app constantly keeps crashing and it was impossible to add/open other files due to these crashes. Very disappointing, avoid.

### 1/5 — Spyware?!

*2026-03-17, version 1.64.1*

It knew my password before I typed it in?! How did it know that?! It must be saving my passwords somehow inside of it and possibly even transmitting it elsewhere like a server. No thanks!!!

### 1/5 — Не работает

*2026-02-02*

После последнего обновления не видит месячную подписку Pro и даёт восстановить покупки

### 1/5 — Crashes when opening the DB

*2025-11-20, version 1.63.0*

After the last update the app crashes when opening the DB.

### 1/5 — Too expensive

*2025-11-11, version 1.62.3*

For an app that uses an open source software to handle the password database, this app is insanely expensive. Again, the software this app is built upon is open source. The dev has the audacity to ask $25/year, $3/month, or $100 for lifetime premium.

I get the dev did have to do work, but the prices are absurd considering the hard part (handling the database) was done for them.

### 1/5 — What Am I Missing?

*2025-09-02, version 1.61*

What is one to think of an iOS app that offers integration with third-party storage:

OneDrive
DropBox
Google Drive

BUT NOT ICLOUD?

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — good password manager

*2026-08-20, version 1.65.0*

pretty easy to use and intuitive

### 5/5 — The future's uncertain and the end is always near

*2026-08-16, version 1.65.0*

Just over a year ago I paid $40.99 for a “lifetime” license for the “Pro” version of this app. I’ve been very happy with this purchase but I am now concerned about it’s deprecation.

10 months ago the developer, Phoebe code Limited, released a new branch called “Strongbox Pro (Outright Purchase for Business)” and renamed the original app to “Strongbox - Keepass & PwSafe (The Premium KeePass Solution)”. Then three months ago released another branch called “Strongbox Zero (Local Only Database)”.

My concern is this: The current release for the original app is now at 1.54.3 and the 2 branch versions are at 1.54.5 . Seeing that updates are trailing for this, the original product, and not for the newer branches is setting off a “Sunset Version” alarm in my mind.

I will leave this review at three stars for now and will update based upon the developers response (or lack thereof).

### 5/5 — Best KeePass Alternative

*2026-08-08, version 1.65.0*

This feels like the best version of a KeePass alternative on the Mac. I tried the others and this was the one that was best overall package.

### 5/5 — Продолбало мой пароль

*2026-07-29*

Точно помню, как вбил, по итогу — ничего нет. Спасибо. Либо не смогло сохранить, либо такой ux, что решило, что можно молча не сохранить явно вбитый пароль

### 5/5 — All you need!

*2026-07-28, version 1.65.0*

This is an amazing password manager, it works exactly like Keepass, but bringing more features up it sleeve and thanks to it minimalist design it’s such an ease to navigate through the app. Especially once you categorise your passwords.

### 5/5 — 3 years good so far

*2026-07-15, version 1.65.0*

No issues, syncs well between devices

### 5/5 — Please add GPG key storage

*2026-07-13, version 1.65.0*

Terrific app

### 5/5 — I’ve Finally Found My Password Manager

*2026-07-10*

My experience using Strongbox over the past month has been genuinely outstanding.

I’ve used several password managers over the years, starting with LastPass, then Apple Passwords, and most recently Bitwarden. They all had their strengths, but Strongbox was the first one that made me think, “This is exactly how I want my password manager to work.”

The biggest reason is that I truly own and control my data. Instead of relying entirely on someone else’s cloud service, I can manage my own encrypted KeePass database wherever I choose. As long as I protect that encrypted file properly, I have confidence that my credentials remain under my control. That philosophy gives me much more peace of mind.

Strongbox feels like much more than just a KeePass client. It has become the central place where I manage everything related to my accounts. Besides passwords, I can store passkeys, TOTP codes, and even attach recovery keys and important files to entries. Having all of this organized in one secure place has made managing my digital life significantly easier.

Another thing I really appreciate is how customizable Strongbox is. There are so many thoughtful settings that let users tailor the app exactly the way they want. I found myself repeatedly thinking, “Wow, they even let me customize this.” The only difficulty I had was that many of these advanced settings are available only in English. I sincerely hope Korean localization can be added in the future, as I believe it would make Strongbox much more accessible to Korean users.

I’d also like to thank you for offering free student licenses. As a student, subscriptions can be difficult to justify, and your generosity gave me the opportunity to experience Strongbox properly. Without that program, I might never have realized just how exceptional this application is.

After using Strongbox, it’s honestly difficult to imagine going back to another password manager. I feel like I’ve found the system I’ll be using for many years to come.

Thank you for creating such an amazing application. I’ll continue recommending Strongbox and wish the project continued success.

### 5/5 — Exactly What I Was Looking For

*2026-07-02*

### 5/5 — Fantastic

*2026-06-22, version 1.64.2*

Great password manager. I switched from 1Password and have no regrets. I love the wifi sync system and the ability to export to an open standard format.
