### 2/5 — Very well executed (UPDATED)

*2026-02-04, version 5.5.1*

Reminds me of the polish and pizazz of Advance Wars: Dual Strike, only with (necessarily) better resolution and no real competitive premise other than "have your phone on and go for a hike or ride vehicles for a day, and you will eventually have done that more than some other people who have also downloaded the app." Still, it's very well executed, and probably harmless as long as you can keep your phone charged. Sort of a fun "why not" toy to have, especially if games like CodeRunner and Paraversume are too distracting or involved for you. I noticed that most of the tiles unlocked in my town were done in straight lines that seemed to cross the whole place without turning, and I wonder if that's from spoofers or people riding aircraft. I guess you can't really do anything about the former without joining the (futile) arms race against spoofers. UPDATE: Someone ruined the ability to sign in using Facebook, which seems like a boneheaded maneuver. Logging in with Facebook isn’t the same thing as engaging with a billion fascists on Facebook. It was chiefly useful as a tool for logging into games. Not sure why fewer and fewer games allow it, or why none of them offer a reasonable or practical alternative, but i have to assume that it’s a reversible mistake, so Thickpolicy should reverse theirs as soon as they can.
UPDATE, FEBRUARY 2026: The app crashes more than it works. A patch note from three months ago says this was addressed, but either the solution instantly undid itself or this is a lie. I really don’t want to uninstall something I’ve been using for such a long time, that I began within days of a life milestone I don’t want to honor any less, especially if the developers are still paying attention to it (at least inasmuch as they still exist enough to say they’re paying attention to it).

### 3/5 — Fun App

*2025-10-15, version 5.5.0*

This is a good app to unlock the world. Problem is it is very battery hungry. It chews through the battery and generates alot of heat. This needs to be fixed

### 3/5 — Facebook login does not seem to work on new iPhone

*2025-06-14, version 5.4.0*

I’ve been using this app for years. Sadly having just upgraded to new iPhone I had the need to reauthenticate using my Facebook account but it doesn’t appear to work anymore 😢 Look like my years of travels may be lost forever as the apps not been updated for 2years *sobs*

### 2/5 — Needs major bug improvement

*2025-01-16, version 5.4.0*

It's been 2 years since its last update roughly, the app needs major improvements and fixes. It has lost many of my tiles I unlocked and I can't get them back, the app absolutely destroys your battery life which shouldn't even happen as badly with GPS usage anymore (it's worse than Pokemon Go somehow). I love the app but man I think it's time to retire it until they can fix it. It's not cared for anymore.

### 2/5 — Updates needed

*2024-11-21, version 5.4.0*

Medals are not updating, also
Slow updates on towns/cities, can take days/weeks to update new totals

### 2/5 — Very well executed (UPDATED)

*2024-11-05*

### 3/5 — Fun App

*2024-10-05, version 5.4.0*

This is a good app to unlock the world. Problem is it is very battery hungry. It chews through the battery and generates alot of heat. This needs to be fixed

### 4/5 — Trophies

*2024-06-11, version 5.4.0*

Good fun but for some reason I can’t unlock any trophies yet to the get the trophy for 1000 tiles despite being at 39,000
And yet to get one for strutting in new Zealand despite living there

### 2/5 — Not worth it

*2023-10-27, version 5.4.0*

Can’t X out of the level-up banner without closing the app. Terrible interface design. Couldn’t even play for 5min. Deleted

### 2/5 — Lost My Account, otherwise good

*2022-12-28, version 5.4.0*

Others are correct that battery drains quickly, so be warned. There aren't really many other bugs, however, and I believe it works well. My main concern however is I am unable to reset my account with my username. When transfering the app to another phone, I am unable to recover my progress on my account that was never deleted yet. I am not sure whether the account I have lost can still be logged in with my apple id or an email, and I haven't been able to contact them.

### 2/5 — Exactly what l need, if only it worked properly.

*2022-10-30, version 5.3.0*

Great concept, but unpolished. Also, drained my battery in 30 minutes, so also useless, would definitely use if improved.

### 3/5 — Drains battery like a mf

*2022-06-19, version 5.2.0*

I love Strut; I’ve been using it for the better part of 4 years.

Somewhat like and unlike Strut, I use two apps (Google Maps and Tile) which constantly uses my location. Maybe these apps don’t get my location at the same frequency as Strut but they don’t drain my battery like Strut does.

I really would like to see some effort to reduce battery usage in Strut like the aforementioned apps.

### 3/5 — Game Keeps Crashing

*2022-06-08, version 5.2.0*

I used to have this app on my old phone, and I really liked it. However, I recently got a new phone, downloaded it, and launched it. The second I was logged into a new account, the game crashed. I reopened it, but the same thing happened. I tried restarting my phone, as well as deleting the app then reinstalling it. Does anyone know the reason to this? This bug isn’t happening for any other apps.

### 3/5 — Not working properly

*2022-02-27, version 5.1.0*

Fun app. However it has stopped tracking once the app is put in the background. I have reinstalled the app and to no avail. The problem persists.

### 4/5 — Location

*2021-09-27, version 5.1.0*

I like the app but I just don’t like that if the app isn’t open then it doesn’t mark the tiles. It only does that if the app is open or you are on it

### 4/5 — Good game, but…

*2021-07-30, version 5.0.2*

I have been playing this for a couple years, along with a couple other GPS type games. Maybe that’s the problem.

1: I love this game and play it frequently.
2: If this app is in the background it is quite likely (not always, but often) to stop recording your tiles until you bring it to the foreground again (or restart it - sometimes bringing it back to the foreground doesn’t cut it)
3: On some of the screens the contrast makes the text absolutely unreadable. Example: the “score” screen - no matter which of the very limited “theme” options I pick, I cannot read lines 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10. Why did you make the text dark grey on a slightly darker grey background, in what I swear is 4 pt font???
4: the server running this is ridiculously slow. Get used to seeing the spinning equivalent of an hourglass when changing screens.
5: I don’t understand why they even tried to make an Apple Watch app for this. It is broken beyond belief - don’t even try it. I thought it was because I had a non-cellular Apple Watch - nope. It was equally useless on my cellular Apple Watch.

Listen - I like the concept of the game. I still play it (without the Apple Watch) - but a little attention from the developer is sorely needed. I would even pay a small monthly subscription fee for it - but only if the above mentioned issues were resolved. Download it and play it - it is fun - but understand the issues going in.

### 2/5 — Still chugging along, albeit with a few issues

*2021-01-15, version 5.0.2*

2021-01-14 update: Back in August, I believe I was in a low cell service area and a new unlocked tile now appeared as “Pending Sync” instead of adding to my total. Now all new tiles show up as pending. Every once in a while during long trips, a batch of 150 tiles will sync and then my total tiles will go up. However, I am up to 1400 pending sync tiles. At this rate, the pending tiles will never fully catch up.

Original review: Still love to use the app, but my big gripe is that it will randomly shut down while strutting; more and more often, too. If you open the iOS camera and take a picture, it’s almost a guarantee that the app will crash.

Hoping we at least get an app update to address all the crashing. Otherwise, no major issues.

### 3/5 — Good but some issues

*2020-02-25, version 4.4.1*

I really like the app but my tile numbers for cities have not updated for about a month now. Hopefully it gets fixed soon!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Drains your battery

*2023-07-24, version 5.4.0*

I have a new iPhone 13 Pro Max, no battery issues normally but having this app running in the background drained my battery from 100% to 0% in less than 6 hours. Not practical at all.

### 1/5 — Excessive battery cost

*2023-06-23, version 5.4.0*

Cool idea in theory but this app used up 30% of my battery life in just over an hour.

### 1/5 — Is there any activity on this app?

*2022-11-30, version 5.3.0*

Not sure what is happening but I do not understand why the thickpolicy website asks for donations (to keep this alive) and then when I donate through the app, I don’t even get the achievement. Never mind the fact that this app costed a couple bucks to obtain in the first place. If they really wanted to keep it alive, maybe release it on android as well.

### 1/5 — Used to be fun

*2022-05-29, version 5.2.0*

This app used to be a lot of fun. It was cool to bring it up and see if you had been there before. Now, it won’t track reliably if it is being used in the background. And even if it’s not running in the background, it crashes pretty regularly.

### 1/5 — Good idea, Reasonable UI, let down by battery management.

*2020-11-12, version 5.0.2*

I really like the concept of this app and the implementation of ‘tiles’, which makes it more fun that similar apps when comparing your efforts to others.

Sadly after using it twice I have had to take it off my phone. The reason? It absolutely caned my battery. In a 20 minute walk with it switched on, my battery went from 70% to 40%! Perhaps the app is optimised for more powerful/modern phones than my 5SE? Equally concerning was that the phone was notably warmer after the 20mins.

### 1/5 — Used to work

*2020-04-29, version 4.4.1*

Now it just crashes in the background and says it has tiles waiting to be synced for weeks. Customer service is nonexistent. They never respond.

Update: Almost 3 months and still no response from the developer.

Update: Almost 300 tiles now that never sync. Decided to try contacting the developer again. I did receive a surprisingly quick response. I’ll paste the response to share the information they have about continuing support for the app. I’d also like to mention that they have a button on their site to contribute to their operating costs as I definitely believe in donating when you can to small developers, especially when their apps are free.

“Hi! We are still maintaining it by keeping it alive and paying for service and storage every month and making sure the core functionality at least works with major iOS releases as we have been for the last seven years. We don’t charge you anything to use it and have never made any money off it thus far. Several people still use it happily, so I don’t see a reason to remove it. Nobody is forcing you to use it. It’s a one man support and development team, so forgive me if I haven’t responded to your previous email.”

### 1/5 — DO NOT DOWNLOAD

*2020-02-18, version 4.4.1*

DO NOT DOWNLOAD

This app is abandoned. Super buggy. Constantly crashes.

I have 5 YEARS of tiles and data on it that’s going to be lost because 1. Support never contacts back. 2. It’s connected to Facebook and there’s no way to change that and 3. There’s no way to export tiles.

I hate that I ever downloaded this app and used it. It was once my favorite app. No longer.

### 1/5 — Make your batter die soon

*2018-02-14, version 4.2.0*

This app significantly run out of your power. Considering I use similar location tracking app, this app perform awfully. Every other app didn’t have such power consuming problem.

I’d suggest not to install unless you have power connected all the time.

### 1/5 — Skeptical about arbitrary removal of scores

*2017-08-09, version 4.0.0*

Not sure what this update actually did (my score is still the same and there are no new features I can find), but it seems a bit silly to announce that Strut will soon take away everyone's scores acquired while in a plane and plenty of high-speed train routes.

There are definitely more pressing issues with this app, like the developers not responding to support requests on their dormant Twitter account and the weird divisions of cities where the municipality has more than one name (see: municipalities in the Brussels Capital Region).

I reckon this update is going to alienate some users at the top of the scoreboard.

### 1/5 — Flights removal

*2017-08-08, version 4.0.0*

Deleting flight tiles is wrong.
Flying is traveling too.
So it is strutting as well.

I may stop using the app !!!

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Wicked cool

*2026-05-25, version 5.5.1*

App is absolutely incredible and in the ultimate method of tracking areas where you explore (better than linear distance like Wandrer.earth and non-tiled apps like Fog of World, which permits weird micro gaps). Unfortunately draws incredible amounts of battery power though.

### 5/5 — Really fun

*2026-04-21, version 5.5.1*

I really enjoy seeing where I have been and unlocking new tiles, being able to show everywhere I have driven is cool. Makes me want to explore my area and go on road trips.

### 5/5 — Great Travel Logging

*2023-12-18, version 5.4.0*

This app is one of the few on my home screen!

I love road trips and hiking. I also love exploring and seeing new sights. I always had a Rand McNally map and yellow highlighter in the car and would mark where I’d been. Then I’d check the map to pick new, unexplored places.

This app allows me to create my own map of my travels. It’s easy to see where I haven’t been yet and encourages me to take new paths.

I joined up after they cutoff the air travel folks - hard to compete against those in the industry. After all, you can’t say you’ve been somewhere if you flew over it at 30,000 feet!

So now I’m getting family and friends involved and am climbing the ranks!

If you like maps, exploring …and if you’re just lil competitive, this is your app!

### 5/5 — Love this app

*2022-11-04, version 5.3.0*

I love this app and have been using it since it was first released.

My phone gets very hot when it is tracking my Strut - is there any chance you could optimize the GPS usage so it doesn’t chew through the battery? Thanks in advance!

### 5/5 — How is this not more popular

*2021-12-08, version 5.1.0*

I am giving this 5-stars, not because it is perfect, but because of the great concept positive impact this has had on my life. It has got me exploring places I thought I knew, and has encouraged me to get out in the world. The concept of unlocking tiles is fabulous, and much better than just snakes of where you travel. It makes you want to “complete” areas. I will have to complete the squares in Buckingham Palace - you might see me scaling the walls!

It is a battery killer though, as expected for an app constantly accessing GPS.

### 5/5 — LOVE THIS APP!!!

*2021-07-17, version 5.0.2*

Please keep this game alive!!! If you have to charge to keep it going I’m sure some people would pay, myself included.

### 5/5 — Great interface, solid experience

*2019-10-16, version 4.4.1*

I’ve been using Strut for several years now, across several countries. It’s a constant companion that hasn’t let me down. The tiles keeps me motivated to move, even if it is for a few metres just to unlock the next one. I’ve dabbled in similar apps but I haven’t found any better. Thanks Strut team!

### 5/5 — 👌👍🏻👍🏻

*2017-08-09, version 4.0.0*

With the new update I think the app got better! I personally was pretty high in the ranks of strutters and had only taken 4 flights in my whole 2.5 year strutting career. It kind of makes it more fair to people who travel just as much as others, but don't fly as often. This app is still great and I will continue to use it!

### 5/5 — Great for exploring

*2017-04-06, version 3.3.1*

The kids and I love this! Encourages us to explore new places. Haven't found another app that does it better. Also works really well.

### 5/5 — Magnificent

*2017-04-02, version 3.3.1*

This is one of the best uses of GPS I've come across. If you travel regularly this app will transform your travel experience.
