## What is Sutra?

Sutra is the best way to read your books and comics — all of them, in one beautifully simple app.

Drop in your own EPUB, PDF, CBZ, or MOBI files — no server, no setup, no account. Or connect Kavita, Calibre, Komga, any OPDS catalog, Project Gutenberg's 75,000+ free classics, or Standard Ebooks' curated collection. However your books and comics reach your phone, Sutra reads them all beautifully, panel by panel where it counts, with everything backed up and synced along the way.

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY • Every CBZ comic and comic-shaped MOBI book opens with a free 7-page preview — read before deciding whether to unlock Sutra Pro • Panel Mode, EPUB, and PDF reading are always completely free, no purchase required

READ COMICS PANEL BY PANEL • Sutra detects each comic page's individual panels and reads them one at a time — a tap or page-flip advances to the next panel instead of jumping the whole page, so every close-up lands exactly the way the artist drew it • Works on CBZ, PDF, and fixed-layout comic EPUB/MOBI; falls back gracefully to the full page when no panels are detected • Manga support: right-to-left reading direction, auto-detected from your files where available and adjustable per book, with dedicated panel detection tuned for manga-style pages

TRACK YOUR READING • A dedicated Stats tab: time read, your current streak, and a swipeable activity chart • See reading progress across every book in your library at a glance

BUILT FOR SELF-HOSTERS TOO • Connect any OPDS server: Kavita, Calibre, Komga, Grimmory, Booklore, or your own • WebDAV support: browse and download EPUB/PDF files from a WebDAV server (Synology and others), self-signed certificates included • Series from Kavita or Calibre auto-group into browsable Collections • Search all your libraries at once or narrow to one; optional HTTP support for servers without HTTPS, with a clear warning before you turn it on

JUST YOUR FILES — NO SERVER REQUIRED • Import EPUBs, PDFs, comics, or MOBI files straight from the Files app — no server, no account, no internet needed • Import a whole folder at once, covers and all — Sutra pulls real cover art and metadata automatically • Everything lives on your device, ready to read anywhere, anytime

THE READING EXPERIENCE YOU DESERVE • Gorgeous EPUB and PDF reading with an authentic page-curl you can tap or drag like turning a real book • Rich typography control: fonts, size, line spacing, alignment, bold text • Four carefully-designed reading themes, including a high-contrast option • Bookmarks, in-book search, and color-coded highlights that sync via iCloud • Two-Panel Reading on iPad: EPUB, MOBI, and PDF books show a facing-page spread in landscape, like an open book

EVERYTHING IN SYNC • Kavita and Komga libraries: page-accurate progress syncs both ways with your server • iCloud: reading position, bookmarks, highlights, and looked-up words sync automatically across iPhone and iPad — automatic, no setup, works offline

PERSONALIZED READING • Day, Night, Contrast, or System appearance — real dark themes for the whole app • Left-Handed Page Turns, Reduce Motion support, and accessibility-first design • Favorites, collections, and smart sorting (by series, date read, title) • Storage manager to free space with one tap

SUTRA PRO — UNLOCK THE FULL COLLECTION (optional, one-time purchase) • Komga libraries with native, page-accurate progress sync • CBZ comic reading in a fixed-layout, zoomable page reader, panel by panel • DRM-free MOBI books — import your existing Kindle-format library (no DRM) and read it in Sutra • One purchase, yours forever — no subscription, ever

EPUB and PDF reading, local file imports, and Panel Mode are completely free, no subscriptions, no ads, no paywall. Sutra Pro is a single one-time purchase that additionally unlocks Komga, CBZ, and MOBI. However you like to read, Sutra's built for it — and your books are always yours.

### 4/5 — Display of pdf

*2026-08-18*

Another comment: for pdf richely designed, i.e. with pictures, frames, etc. there should be an option to display the original pdf as-is, without rendering it’s text independently from the original design.
Comment because some pdf aren’t really readable because of this rich design which is difficult to handle

**Developer response:** Thanks for the feedback! I'll look into full white characters for a dark theme as an option. To your other question, I'm trying to create an option for users to open a couple of cbz files as a part of the free offering so that they can test out the feature as a part of the 2.1 release

### 1/5 — Calibre web support broken

*2026-08-08*

I have tried several times now to get my Calibre web library working but it just hangs. I’ve done so much troubleshooting on my server to try and diagnose why it doesn’t work. I can put in my server details and it recognizes my library but just never returns. If I ever get it working maybe I can see how well it actually works as an OPDS client. Komga support is also welcome and interesting but I’m not paying money if I can’t get the basic functionality working.

**Developer response:** Sorry to hear that! I would appreciate it if you could submit feedback here with your specific issue, and I will take a look to see how we can fix it - https://sutra-reader.com/feedback.html

### 5/5 — Amazing reading experience

*2026-08-06*

This is a solution for all your e reading problems. Loving the ability to link to Kavita and Gutenberg. And the reading experience has been fantastic. Takes a bit to load my library, but is great after that.

### 5/5 — Smooth

*2026-08-04*

I like that it is easy in use. Also that it is free. Thanks to the app I did setup my own calibre( i will test it for 1-2 weeks and definitely support. Even if I don't need that extra options). Maybe we can get a Google translator.

### 4/5 — Handling of epub full pages should be improved

*2026-08-04*

The application is great, in particular it’s ability to connect to Calibre and Kavita servers. However, the display of epub pages is weak and could be improved. The page does not fully occupy the full display of an iPad
Furthermore when you choose a dark theme full white characters could be enabled to enhance contrast
You should also allow one import of cbz file so that one can test your display of a comic, before buying the pro version

**Developer response:** Thanks for the feedback! I'll look into full white characters for a dark theme as an option. To your other question, I'm trying to create an option for users to open a couple of cbz files as a part of the free offering so that they can test out the feature as a part of the 2.1 release

### 5/5 — Finally got https running

**Developer response:** Thank you!!

### 5/5 — Very nice

*2026-07-14*

Very good app, I can't wait to see how it evolves. The developer is responsive and very nice, the update with the page curl animation is lovely. Thank you !

**Developer response:** Thank you!!

### 5/5 — Very good

*2026-07-14*

Great integration with kavita. It is the only OPDS app Ive seen that will load in my epub comics

**Developer response:** Glad to hear that. Thanks for your review!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.1.7 — 2026-08-17

We've been busy! Here's what's new in Sutra:

Try Before You Buy
Every CBZ comic and comic-shaped MOBI book now opens with a free 7-page preview — read the first 7 pages of anything in your library before deciding whether to unlock Sutra Pro.

Reading Statistics
A new Stats tab: time read, streak, a swipeable activity chart, and your reading progress across every book in one place.

WebDAV Server Support
Browse and download EPUB/PDF files straight from a WebDAV server — Synology, and any other WebDAV host — with self-signed certificates supported via a one-time trust prompt.

Manga Support
Read comics right-to-left, top-to-bottom — tap left to advance, tap right to go back, and panel order flows top-right to bottom-left. Switch any comic between Regular and Manga from the reader's Aa menu; it's remembered per book. Comic panel detection now has dedicated tuning for manga-style pages, on top of general improvements to how accurately panels are cropped for every comic.

Tons of Fixes and Improvements
Smoother, more accurate continuous scrolling that reliably resumes exactly where you stopped, easier connectivity to self-hosted servers without HTTPS configured (with clearer guidance for Tailscale and similar VPN setups), faster and more reliable loading for large libraries, more accurate comic panel detection across the board, and a fix for books occasionally opening to a blank page.

Also New
Two-Panel Reading on iPad (EPUB, MOBI, and PDF books show a facing-page spread in landscape), pinch-to-zoom on images, a new high-contrast Contrast reading theme, page-curl animation for comics, and a smarter library with on-device caching, per-library filtering, and bulk collection management.

Thanks for reading with Sutra — happy reading!

### 2.0.22 — 2026-08-03

We've been busy! Here's what's new in Sutra:

Read Comics Panel by Panel
A brand new way to read comics: Sutra detects each page's individual panels, and a tap or page-flip advances panel by panel instead of jumping the whole page at once — every close-up lands exactly where the artist intended. Works on CBZ, PDF, and fixed-layout comic EPUB/MOBI, and it's free for everyone, no purchase required.

Just Your Files — No Server Needed
Already have a folder of books or comics? Import EPUB, PDF, CBZ, or MOBI files straight from the Files app — no self-hosted server, no account, no setup. Import a whole folder at once and Sutra grabs real covers and metadata automatically.

Komga Support
Komga is now a first-class server type alongside Kavita and Calibre, with the same page-accurate two-way progress sync Kavita users already love — read your Komga comics and manga panel by panel too.

CBZ Comics
Open .cbz comic archives in a fixed-layout, zoomable page reader — and read them panel by panel just like everything else.

DRM-Free MOBI Support
Import your .mobi files straight from the Files app and read them right in Sutra.

Sutra Pro
A friendly one-time purchase — no subscription, ever — that unlocks Komga libraries, CBZ comic reading, and DRM-free MOBI books. EPUB, PDF, local file imports, and Panel Mode itself stay free forever, as always.

Thanks for reading with Sutra — happy reading!

### 1.3.0 — 2026-07-16

Mark Your Books with Color-Coded Highlights
Select any passage in EPUB or PDF, choose a color, and it highlights persistently while reading. Every highlight auto-saves to Settings → Text Highlights and syncs via iCloud to all your devices. Tap a highlight to change its color or delete it. Browse all highlights for a book directly in the reader's Bookmarks sheet.

Improved Definition Lookup
No more automatic pop-ups when you select text. Now you control what happens: tap Define for the definition, Highlight to mark it, Copy to save it, or Search the library — all in one convenient menu bar.

Your Series, Organized Automatically
If your Kavita or Calibre server has series metadata, Sutra groups your books by series in the Collections shelf — so you can browse and pick up the next book without losing your place in a sequence.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-07-10

A big update: a real page-curl animation for turning pages, a full dark theme (Day, Night, or follow System), and Left-Handed Page Turns for one-handed reading — all new in Settings. Series information now comes through from Kavita libraries, with a proper Series sort. Standard Ebooks connects with your Patrons Circle email. Plus a wide pass of reliability fixes: more accurate cross-device and Kavita progress sync, large self-hosted libraries no longer silently losing books from search, and a range of smaller fixes across search, downloads, and the reader.

### 1.0 — 2026-07-07
