Response from developer

Hi, Thanks for the detailed review. Listening and guessing the meaning is only one exercise type, and it is there to train comprehension by ear. A new language sounds foreign at first, that is normal. Much of what you ask for is already in the app: one exercise plays a Swiss German recording, you rebuild the sentence you heard, then see it in English. "Connect Words" shows both languages side by side. Since the 9 September update you can tap any word in "Connect Words" and "Guess New Word" to hear it again, and replaying whole sentences is in the update out today. Swissli mixes these exercise types on purpose, so you train listening, reading and vocabulary together. It is a shame to get 1/5 for an app that already has most of what you asked for. Please update, try the other exercises, and if Swissli then feels closer to the potential you saw in it, we would appreciate a revised rating.

You have to guess??

I love the concept of this app and think it has a lot of potential, but the learning experience could be improved significantly. Right now, you have to listen to audio in Swiss German and guess what it means in English. For beginners, that can be frustrating and makes learning much more difficult than it needs to be. A much more effective approach would be to display the Swiss German phrase alongside its English translation (or the user's selected language). Being able to see both languages side by side would help users understand connections between words, compare meanings, and memorize vocabulary more naturally. Instead of repeatedly guessing and getting answers wrong, learners could build confidence while actually understanding what they're hearing. I think adding this feature would make the app far more user-friendly and effective for people trying to learn Swiss German. I’ve been getting them right only because I’ve studied some basics by myself. Overall, I think have it where it’s side by side and then after a few lessons then gradually do it to where you have to guess. So that way you do remember and don’t rely on side by side. Also, would be nice if I could press on the words and sentences multiple times to hear it over again after guessing it correctly.
