## What is Sylights for iPad?

You know the story: every day, thousands of photographers share their pictures on their blog, portfolio or on sharing platforms such as Flickr®. Every day, the same question gets asked: “How did you light this photo?”.

Now this is a tricky one! How does one go to explain a full setup of light modifiers, including strobes settings, placement, angles, ...?
Short answer: lighting diagrams.
Because a picture is worth a thousand words, Sylights has developed a tool to design outstanding lighting diagrams to help photographers prepare their shooting sessions or document their photos.

Whether you are shooting in a studio, covering a wedding or doing any other on-location photography work, here's what Sylights for iPad has to offer you:
• A full screen lighting diagram editor, featuring an unprecedented user interface to quickly place any gear you're using on the screen:
- Resize and rotate items with intuitive two-finger gestures.
- With our unique gear wheel, only a few taps are required to access any of the 60 items of our growing gear library.
- Double-tap on any item to open its contextual menu, offering z-ordering and customizable properties.
- Save your diagram at any time and come back later to edit it again and complete it.

• A collection of your diagrams giving you access to a wide range of features:
- Diagram edition – just in case you had forgotten something, no need to do it all over again!
- Attach photos to your diagrams: choose them from your photo library, or use your device's built-in camera to take an instant shot of your setup before it's taken apart.
- Send by email: an easy and quick way to share diagrams. If it's for your friends, send the diagram and its associated photos. If it's for your assistant, include all the settings information as well!
- Save the diagram to your photo library.

• A small yet responsive team you can get in touch with at any time on feedback.sylights.com, on Twitter (@Sylights) or on Facebook (facebook.com/sylights). We're always happy to hear about your suggestions or your projects!

So that's it: Sylights for iPad. If you're craving for that kind of app then you're on the right page!
Install it now, it's free :)

### 4/5 — Does what I need it to do.

*2022-08-02, version 1.14*

Great app.

### 4/5 — Real helpfull

*2020-05-14, version 1.10.1*

I was having trouble setting up my shots, and when i found this app i was very very helpfull

### 5/5 — Very useful -- must have if you shoot studio

*2017-09-12, version 1.8*

Fantastic app -- I have used it for years so I can recreate useful lighting.

### 5/5 — Awesome

*2016-05-19, version 1.7*

This app is great! I've used this app for several years and it's to document the lighting for every shot. This makes it easier if the team needs to reshoot an object or model.

### 1/5 — Needs work

*2015-06-17, version 1.7*

Won't let me rotate items on iPad. If I grab a handle to rotate, it just opens the "copy" feature on iPad.

### 1/5 — Waste of $3

*2014-05-18, version 1.5.2*

There's a single, sample diagram in the app when you install it. There are many diagrams on the Sylights website with download links. Hmm, maybe when I pay $3 to remove ads that will enable downloading of the diagrams into the iPad for review and ideas.

I looked over the website, but didn't see anything about that, so I must have missed something because who would make an app without such obvious functionality.

Apparently, the Sylights creators would. There's no way to get the diagrams into the app. Pretty useless waste of $3 and the app's potential.

### 5/5 — Studio Photographer - Very useful App!!

*2013-10-03, version 1.2*

Do you work in a studio and want to record light setup? GET THIS APP! I have payed out many trick lighting setups that I might otherwise forget or just not remember placement of equipment.

For the developers, great job! Plan to contribute. Can you please add flags, v-flats and gobos to the list of tools? A boom icon and light stand would also help. Thank you!

### 3/5 — Useful and Intuitive, only one major complaint

*2013-08-10, version 1.1.2*

I like the app, and find it intuitive and easy to use. So far, I have only one major complaint, the "floor" keeps moving around. There is a zoom function to scale the size of the floor, why does it have to slide around? I find myself sliding the entire image around, when I'm trying to position a single element. This is very annoying. Let the zoom slider do its job, and don't allow the user to reposition the floor without activitating it with a press/hold on the floor, just like the press/hold on an element to select it.

I like some of the other users' suggestions, like adding notes, ala selfhiding sticky notes, that can be attached to each piece of equipment, etc.

### 2/5 — Pretty, but not very functional or useful

*2012-12-03, version 1.1*

As a photographer I was excited to try it. And as a photographer I find it confusing , hard to operate quickly, lacking functionality and editing. No space for text and labeling. It has great potential for photographers and filmmakers and was a nice start, but misses the mark in real world abilities. It's limited to people teaching lighting design and maybe that was it simple purpose . I'll be looking for useful updates and it'd be a tool I'd gladly pay for.

### 5/5 — Nice, easy and useful app!

*2012-10-28, version 1.1*

Exactly what I was looking for. Just wish I could sign in to account from the app, sync, share/import to/from other users.
