## What is SymPy Editor?

Edit mathematics the way you read it. SymPy editor draws your expression as a real formula, and every piece of it responds to touch: tap a term to select it, type over it, pull it apart, or apply any function from SymPy, the Python computer algebra system that powers it all.

The whole CAS runs on your phone. No account, no ads, no tracking, no network: CPython and SymPy are packaged inside the app, everything you type stays on your device, and it all works in airplane mode.

EDIT FORMULAS, NOT CODE
• Tap any sub-expression (a term, an exponent, a matrix entry) and edit it in place
• Type over a selection, or place a caret between terms and insert
• Tap an operator to change it: turn + into a product, make an equation, or delete it
• Unwrap (cos θ → θ), isolate, delete, copy and paste sub-expressions
• The SymPy source line under the formula follows it, and the formula follows the line: edit whichever you prefer

ALL OF SYMPY, ONE TAP AWAY
• Transform menu: simplify, expand, factor, partial fractions, trig rewriting and more
• A menu per type: matrices offer determinant, inverse and transpose; integrals, sums, derivatives and limits offer evaluation; equations swap sides or collect everything on the left
• A search box over every SymPy function, asking for the parameters each one needs
• An "unevaluated" switch builds Integral(f, x) or Determinant(M) symbolically instead of computing it
• A Symbols panel for assumptions (positive, real, integer…) and matrix symbols with their shapes

EVERY STEP IS REMEMBERED
• The history shows each step and what changed: in red what went, in green what came
• Play it as a slideshow, at the speed you choose
• Save it as a self-contained web page that works offline, or as a Python script that rebuilds every step with SymPy
• Keep several sessions, each with its own history, all on your device

FOR STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND SCIENTISTS
Complete the square in front of a class, evaluate limits and integrals, manipulate matrices and N-dimensional arrays, and export the derivation when it is done.

FREE AND OPEN SOURCE
BSD 3-Clause, no strings attached. Worked derivations, the source code and a browser version are at https://upabjojr.github.io/sympy-editor/ — and the same editor runs in Jupyter notebooks (pip install sympy-editor).

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 0.1.2 — 2026-10-05

What's new in 0.1.2

HANDWRITING

• Write a formula with your finger or Apple Pencil and have it read into the expression. Recognition runs entirely on your device.
• Writing near the edge of the formula area now opens more room, to the right and downwards, so you can keep going.
• Switching the pen off clears any strokes you did not apply.

A CALMER SCREEN

• The four arrows now sit in a row just under the formula, with the keyboard button at the right. It blinks when a selection or a caret appears, to show you can type there.
• Inside a matrix, the row and column buttons join that row.
• The bar that popped up under every selection is gone. Edit, Unwrap, Delete, Isolate, Copy and Paste each have one fixed place in the tools.

TYPING LANDS WHERE THE CARET IS

• Text typed in front of a term now joins that term: with the caret before the 1 of x + 1, typing r gives x + r.
• A caret outside a function call such as f(x, y) multiplies the whole call instead of typing into its arguments.

CLEARER ANSWERS

• After a LaTeX or handwritten reading is applied, Keep is green and Undo the change is red, matching the colours of the change shown above them.

YOUR WORK IS SAFER

• The last edit is kept even if the app is closed a moment later.
• Two windows no longer overwrite each other's sessions.
• A session that cannot be opened stays in the list instead of disappearing.
• Opening a saved .sympy file never runs code from it, and files holding enormous numbers no longer freeze the app.
• Interrupt stops only the computation it was pressed for.

ALSO

• Open formula, Save formula and the history exports are always available from the ≡ menu.
• Many fixes in the Plot, Expression tree, Rewrite rules, Console and LaTeX add-ons.
• As before, the app works fully offline: nothing leaves your device.

### 0.1.1 — 2026-09-28

SymPy Editor 0.1.1

The first release with add-ons, and a lot of work on how the editor feels under a finger.

ADD-ONS
Four add-ons ship with the app. Switch them on and off from the top of the ≡ drawer; the app remembers what you left on.
• Expression tree: the formula as a tree you can tap, edit and drag, with a tree for every step of the history.
• Plot: the graph of the selection, with pinch, drag and zoom on both axes.
• Rewrite rules: rules with wildcards, kept in named rule sets between sessions.
• LaTeX: type or paste LaTeX; every ambiguous part is offered as a choice instead of being guessed.

EDITING
• Matrices and arrays: add and remove rows and columns, drag the corner grip to reshape, and move through the entries with the arrows as they are drawn.
• Templates: \int, \sum, \prod, \lim, \frac, \binom, \matrix and more build the whole construction with empty boxes to fill; Tab moves between them.
• Operators can be selected and replaced: pick the + or = and type another.
• Selecting with a finger: a long press starts a range, dragging past the edge scrolls and keeps selecting, and the toolbar no longer flickers while you drag.
• A refused edit says why, and the formula flashes red.
• Allow invalid: an optional switch keeps what SymPy would refuse (a product of matrices whose shapes don't match) as a red node until you fix it.

FILES AND SESSIONS
• Save a formula as a .sympy file and open it again with the app, history included.
• The history can be exported as a page or as a Python script.
• Sessions that could not be reopened before now open.

FIXES
• Long computations can be interrupted.
• Pinch-zoom only zooms the formula, the plot and the tree, never the whole app; the page scrolls only up and down, and the formula scrolls sideways.
• The LaTeX add-on no longer freezes on first use, and no longer reports half-typed LaTeX as an error.
• The formula no longer flashes the wrong expression while the last session reopens.
• Many smaller fixes to selection, the caret, the history and the guides behind every "?".

PRIVACY
The app works entirely offline: it carries its own Python and SymPy, and nothing you write leaves your device.
