## What is SynthJacker?

SynthJacker is an autosampler for iOS. It automatically plays back a MIDI sequence with the notes and velocities you specify, and records the results into an audio file. It then slices the audio into individual sample files, ready to import into an iOS sampler app of your choice.

SynthJacker supports both internal instrument Audio Units (AUv3) and external hardware synths. Additionally, you can export a MIDI file with the desired notes and record a synth playing it back, then bring it to SynthJacker for slicing.

You can save presets of your sampling sessions, including the note range, velocity layers, and note durations. You can also apply post-processing to samples, to trim silence from them or normalize their level.

SynthJacker automatically names the resulting sample files with note and velocity information, so that they can easily be automapped by a sampler app. It also writes an SFZ file with sample information as regions and their root keys and velocity mapping. You will find the results in the iOS Files app, in the SynthJacker folder of your device.

## Key features

- Automated MIDI playback and recording
- Audio slicing into individual samples
- Support for AUv3 and external synths
- Preset saving for sampling sessions
- Post-processing for sample trimming and normalization
- Automatic sample file naming
- SFZ file generation for sampler mapping

### 2/5 — Not suitable for advertised use case

*2024-12-14, version 0.8.3*

In theory, it’s a well-made app with a sensible layout and good workflow. However, it does not work well for any non-trivial synthesizer sound as sampling runs with few seconds per note and more than a few notes and velocity layers will fail with an error message. The developer confirmed that it is a known problem but has not done anything to fix it.

### 4/5 — Just needs an update on the timing aspect for 5stars

*2024-05-02, version 0.8.3*

I would like the issue of the timing with auto recording to be fixed. That’s my main concern. Just simply auto record the notes exactly when key is pressed and stop recording once done, and that’s all. Every recording session something’s always wrong with the samples. It’s still worth 4stars, not bad. Adding an Auv3 fx host to a future update will be a bonus.

### 3/5 — Please update

*2024-04-01, version 0.8.3*

Anyway you can fix or update this app. It’s awesome but I’m getting tired of it stoping every time I record. It’s like a luck game anymore, press record and hope it finishes the process. Very frustrating.

### 1/5 — Useless

*2024-01-17, version 0.8.3*

Pass on this and get AudioLayer instead.
The developer has admittedly abandoned this from what I’ve read on the Audiobus forums, whined about people leaving bad reviews. Don’t want bad reviews? Make a product that works, not a beta with paying customers as guinea pigs .

### 5/5 — Very nice

*2023-03-30, version 0.8.3*

Great Autosample on the iPad (or iPhone).

Easy to setup and use. Exports standard wav (orAIFF, CAF) and the definition SFZ file together to be used in sample library players.

If you have many iOS synths and want to use your own created sounds in a soundlibrary, this is it!
For instance in Audiolayer on iOS, which I am using.
Or use them in your PC/ Mac DAW Sample library player!

### 1/5 — Unusable

*2023-03-06*

It’s impossible to make it work with many errors or empty notes

### 1/5 — Ne fonctionne pas!

*2022-06-30, version 0.8.3*

Bonne idée mais inutilisable, l’application bug systématiquement!
Crash ou fichiers incomplets, et suis sur iPad Pro!

### 3/5 — Won’t Refund.

*2021-10-12, version 0.8.2*

File import in description is vague. It didn’t do what I needed it to so I submitted for a refund. It was then denied even after explaining why I do not need the app.

### 5/5 — Automatic custom instruments!

*2021-06-19, version 0.8.2*

Great tool. Easy and intuitive to use. Helpful manual on developer site. Like having Sample Robot for iOS. Just a few on screen settings then it automatically records a source instrument and slices the recording into samples conveniently named based on your settings.

Can use the samples in any appropriate sampler, or use the automatically generated instrument pre-set in samplers with SFZ support. Or convert the SFZ preset to SF2 soundfonts or other format with an appropriate tool. It also generates the sequence for the source instrument to play when making the sample recording. The handy, generated midi sequence and SFZ instrument definition preset files can be reused anywhere. Records plug-in instruments and external gear. Also has an audio file import feature to record from inter-app audio or any other sources.

### 5/5 — A great app!

*2020-12-10, version 0.8.2*

I am a Deluge owner, and I was looking at the auto-sampling function of the MPC Live thinking “man that’s cool”. So I did some research and found SynthJacker yesterday. I just sampled some presets from Moog Model 15 and Korg Module that I loaded on my Deluge, so far it is really great, super convenient, and effortless. A very good tool! My only wish would be to support Inter App audio, cause I can’t sample my other Korg’s apps :’( Is there a workaround to select an audioinout from within my iphone?

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 0.8.3 — 2022-06-28

- Small fixes and improvements
- Last app version to support iOS 13

### 0.8.2 — 2020-09-11

- Fixed a problem with hardware sample rates. Previously SynthJacker would try to set the hardware sample rate to 44.1 kHz. On newer devices the sample rate is fixed at 48 kHz. This could result in samples being out of tune.
- New sample post-processing engine with better visual feedback.
- Added input level meter.
- Note sequence name now follows the selected factory preset on instrument Audio Units.
- Added option to clean up temporary files (in Settings menu).
- Added alert for missing microphone permission, in case it was turned off after it was initially granted.

### 0.7.1 — 2019-10-09

• Introducing BYOAF or "Bring Your Own Audio File": you can now use the SynthJacker slicing engine with audio files recorded outside the app. This will allow you to auto-sample Inter-App Audio apps, macOS desktop apps and Audio Unit extensions, or anything that responds to MIDI and outputs sound. Export a MIDI file of your sequence, record it in a DAW and bring it to the Files app. The details of the process are found in the SynthJacker user manual.
• Supports iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, including Dark Mode.

Fixes and enhancements for iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 since version 0.7.0:
• Restored full-screen instrument Audio Unit view.
• Fixed crash when playing back an imported recording.
• Better Dark Mode support.

### 0.7.0 — 2019-09-27

- Introducing BYOAF or "Bring Your Own Audio File": you can now use the SynthJacker slicing engine with audio files recorded outside the app.
- Supports iOS 13 and Dark Mode.
- You can now completely hide the virtual piano keyboard in the instrument Audio Unit view, to be able to use any instrument controls at the very bottom of the screen.
- The maximum note length time has been increased to 30 seconds.

### 0.6.1 — 2019-06-02

- SynthJacker now supports the selection of audio input(s) for external audio interfaces with more than one channel. If the audio interface has an even number of channels, they are grouped into stereo pairs. Single channels may be selected individually. Recordings from an external source are stereo or mono depending on your input selection.
- Internal recordings from instrument Audio Units are always stereo 44.1 kHz.
- The SFZ file generated by SynthJacker now contains velocity information for the sample regions.
- SynthJacker now generates a standard MIDI file of the selected sequence as a side product of the recording.
- Some instrument Audio Units showed a blank view. This has been fixed.
- The virtual keyboard no longer obscures the instrument view.
- You can create a copy of any sequence by swiping to the left in the master list and tapping Duplicate.
