### 5/5 — Learning!

*2022-01-16, version 1.6.604*

This has helped and is continuing too.

### 5/5 — So worth it!

*2022-01-02, version 1.6.604*

The tutorials are very beginner friendly and are exactly what I need to learn about synths. Way better than YouTube videos, no ads, and to the point. You get plenty of practice, and the add on packs are really well explained too (at least for Serum it is, not sure about the others since I don’t use them). This is worth every dollar I paid and it works well on my iPad and desktop. I just wish there was an easier way to sync files across an account, but I am already very satisfied with the lesson material.

### 5/5 — Perfect for beginners!

*2021-12-14, version 1.6.604*

This tutorial does not assume you know anything! Truly perfect for beginners

### 5/5 — Great Tool

*2021-11-30, version 1.6.604*

I got my first synth recently and this app has really helped to demystify all the settings. YouTube videos can only take you so far. Highly recommended.

### 5/5 — Best way to get into synthesis

*2021-11-29, version 1.6.604*

Really hearing it and not just ‘youtubing’ it
It start from very basic but skipping all the things that are irrelevant when you just starting so you could focus on the important things listening and changing the knobs to create the sound you hear.
Give it a try for free and you’ll probably buy it by the end of lesson 20

### 5/5 — Best synthesis learning tool

*2021-11-04, version 1.6.604*

There is nothing like it out there. If you want to learn the secrets of subtractive synthesis then this is your golden ticket!

### 5/5 — Incredible Tool To Learn Sound Design

*2021-10-31, version 1.6.604*

If you’ve ever encountered a synth but not known where to start with all the knobs and buttons, look no further. Syntorial is the easiest, most fun way to learn synthesizers from the ground up. Little by little, you will train your ear to catch little differences in each sound, and through lots of trial and error, you’ll learn how to create those sounds yourself.
It’s worth every penny.

### 5/5 — Just Completed Free Lessons; Bought Immediately

*2021-10-17, version 1.6.603*

Very stoked to dive deep into these lessons. I was very pleased with the free lessons because it was exactly what I was looking for. The app is extremely practical and trains you to use your ear almost identically to how a guitarist or keyboardist trains there ear to learn their instrument. 12/10 recommend for any upcoming synth geeks and music producer. Thank you Syntorial for this masterpiece.

Ps I don’t even write reviews but somehow this app has motivated me to do so. Take what you may from that

### 5/5 — Great app for fundamentals of sound design

*2021-10-04, version 1.6.603*

As stated above

### 5/5 — So good

*2021-08-22, version 1.6.603*

Legit never took the time to write a review before. This app is so useful and helpful I felt compelled. It’s exactly what I was looking for and then some. Primer is an excellent learning synth and the narrator hits every bit of it and provides incredible instruction, reason, and tips to boot. When I got a little more advanced(after months of getting at it) I downloaded Massive and have started on those tutorials. I just can’t say enough good stuff about this software.

### 5/5 — Great

*2021-08-15, version 1.6.603*

After going randomly through sound design for a long while, this gives you a structure, and it’s really fun. Even the very first lessons made me notice things I had never paid attention to!

### 5/5 — Fantastic!

*2021-07-31, version 1.6.603*

I’m a complete beginner to synth, and have been interested for a very long time to learn. Syntorial has made this possible! When learning it goes such a long way to actually be able to work through the steps and apply it yourself, which is exactly what this is. The way this enables you to learn different areas and focus solely on that at one time (while also showing you how well you’re doing) is so incredibly helpful to really grasping all the different areas of sound. Just amazing. I’m only about 20% percent through the lessons, and have already learned so much to apply to playing synth and creating patches. I’ve gained such a valuable foundation, and with 150+ more lessons to go. Absolutely well worth the money. Thank you SO much for creating Syntorial!!

### 5/5 — Phenomenal

*2021-07-28, version 1.6.603*

I didn’t even really know what synths were just a few weeks ago. I’m now halfway through Syntorial and can keep up with the sound engineer I work with who has 10+ years of experience. He’s so impressed by what I’ve learned he’s considering doing Syntorial himself.

Some highlights of Syntorial:

- Phenomenal instructor
- Lessons are concise and focus on one thing at a time, building on one another
- The “listen to your ear” approach is amazing. When I listen to my music with synths now I can write down what they are doing to produce what I’m hearing, and even hop in to a DAW and try to reproduce it

If you’re interested in learning more about synthesizers, look no further.

### 5/5 — The fun in fundamentals

*2021-07-18, version 1.6.603*

I have a above average understanding of synths but this has enriched my understanding and actually trained my ear to identify different waveforms, which I didn't anticipate.

### 5/5 — Worth every penny!

*2021-06-15, version 1.6.603*

This app is indescribably value! The lessons have expanded my sound exponentially and I’m only on lesson 10. I’m experimenting with different apps and the knowledge is transferable to the apps with the same parameters. Can’t wait to see How i fair after finishing their lessons!

### 5/5 — Great app for both synth and ear training.

*2021-06-06, version 1.6.603*

When your starting out, synths look overwhelming. So many knobs and dials, it’s scary to try and make something. This app will not only help you learn to make your own synths and get off the preset wagon; it will train your ear to hear the difference and immediately know which knobs need adjusting to get the sound you want.

Not to mention it comes with packs to learn Serum and Massive specifically. Plus the synth you train on, you can download to use as a plugin when developing in your DAW of choice. Definitely worth it.

My only word of caution is that I got lazy part way through, and was using my Airpod Pros for convenience. But it hit a point where I couldn’t hear the difference. It got frustrating and then I plugged in my studio headphones and it was like night and day. So, as always make sure you have the appropriate gear.

### 5/5 — Amazing!

*2021-05-27, version 1.6.603*

The standard by which all others should be judged. Perfectly paced, satisfyingly deep, it teaches you exactly what it promises to, and you LEARN it! Couldn’t be happier.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Rip Off

*2021-07-19, version 1.6.603*

£130 to access all lessons!! They look like they were written in the 90’s. I’ll stick to the YouTube videos thanks.

### 1/5 — Very unintuitive

*2021-02-11, version 1.6.603*

For a beginner, it’s very unintuitive

### 1/5 — You have got to be kidding!

*2015-09-27, version 1.6.2*

I don't care how good these lessons could be, the in app purchase price is WAY too expensive, I could not possibly recommend paying even half this much. Just look at Korg, Propellerheads, Rock Prodigy etc. these companies understand how this market works and they're selling like hotcakes. Adopt microtransactions if you must, not this bait and switch rubbish. No I don't want a "free set of steak knives" with my "five easy payments"...

### 2/5 — Crashes on ios14

*2020-12-01, version 1.6.602*

After purchasing the full version and entering my details into the app, it crashes on startup every time. Re-installs have not helped.

### 2/5 — Upgrade price is insane

*2018-11-17*

I was really loving the synth tutorials. I am learning alongside my 12 year EDM fan and we were really digging the lessons and learning a bunch. Then we got to the end of the free lessons and WHAM!!!! $129 to continue!!! As much as we love your lessons and teaching style, there is just no way we could justify spending so much to continue. So sorry because we absolutely loved this. Maybe you should offer price tiers. One price for the basic lessons, another for the lesson packs for Serum and Massive (which we don’t need), and another for PC/Mac access and the plugin. I’m a software product manager with years of experience and offering all or nothing bundles is a sure way to lose customers. Wish you had some lower price points to continue with more lessons.

**Developer response:** Thanks for the feedback on price. We actually think tiers isn't a bad idea, and will take it into consideration.

### 3/5 — Great tool for learning synth sound design

*2021-12-03, version 1.6.604*

This tool is fun and a great way to learn synth principles.
20 free lessons is great but making you spend $129 to proceed past further is prohibitive although worth it to get the additional 179 lessons but way too much at once on a students budget, it would be great to have an option to pay $0.99 per lesson after the initial 20 free lessons, i would be more than happy to pay on a per lesson basis or a even 10 or 20 lesson packs. You would gain far more paying customers with that option. If you had that I would give a full five stars but I guess I’ll just get my free 20 lessons and then remove the app 😞

### 4/5 — great synth ear training, useful explanations

*2023-03-03, version 1.6.605*

I am still quite new to synthesizers, and many synth enthusiasts talk about terms and parameters that are way over my head. A lot of this app is designed for you to use your ear to reproduce patches, which is something that I needed a lot of practice with.

I have heard there is a 2.0 version in development, and I have a few suggestions for improvement. (These may have been addressed already, I’m not sure)

On iPad the transition between the tutorial videos and the interactive sections is not seamless. The videos default to full screen, and when it finishes, you have to swipe in order to go out of full screen, and you only have a second to select the challenge button to proceed before it goes back to full screen again.

The tutorials gradually build up the amount of parameters in each patch by adding one section at a time. Certain groups are more challenging than others. I think it would be great in the future if the user could enable/disable certain sections to focus on what they need to practice on. From the middle of the tutorials towards the end, the amount of parameters can get a little overwhelming.

I did purchase the full content on sale, but I think the value is quite excellent, and there are not many products out there that are comparable for interactive synth learning!

### 4/5 — First rate and incredible support

*2015-07-26, version 1.6.1*

I was looking for a better way to learn how to use my new Moog synth, and was tired of the boring books filled with theory. So I tried Syntorial and was pleasantly surprised. I'm not usually one for e-learning, but this is excellent. The right blend of little learning chunks; with lots of hands-on exercises. I have learned tons. The support has been excellent too. Way better than reading a book, or watching a YouTube where you can't see what is being done and why. The only reason I didn't rate 5 stars is that some of the exercises take awhile. I'd like the option to move faster.

### 5/5 — Fantastic

*2023-05-06, version 1.6.605*

Probably the best tutorial I’ve ever taken. Started in April and couldn’t wait for a sale as it is worth the price! Hope they do some lessons on Vital synth and Surge XT in the future.

### 5/5 — Fantastic so far, exactly what I need

*2023-03-25, version 1.6.605*

I’m a beginning synth student, was getting nowhere with overly technical jargonistic videos. Instead of focusing on technical details, this course focuses on sounds, and how to create those sounds. While some videos talk about ring oscillators and low pass filters, this course will show you what they sound like and how to use them. It’s ear training at its finest, which is a great way to teach music.

Bravo!

## Most praised reviews (8 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — One of the best tutorials I have encountered on any subject

*2023-01-31, version 1.6.605*

This tutorial has taken me from having no knowledge on how synthesizers work to a place where I am comfortable working on my own analog synth. Now, I am beginning to work through the Serum module.
The instructor/narrator has a very clear and relaxed teaching style that promotes learning, and recreating the challenge patches is really fun.
     It,s a great tutorial!

### 5/5 — Just what you’re looking for!

*2022-09-11, version 1.6.605*

Step by step breakdown into the world of synthesizers! And it’s almost entirely hands on which is a great way to learn.

### 5/5 — Transformative

*2022-06-26, version 1.6.605*

This will change your relationship to sound.

### 5/5 — Hours of content

*2022-06-22, version 1.6.605*

One knob at a time, each game has sounds to copy, as more knobs unlock the synth board fills up. I’m on my first round with Syntorial and expect to use the hint button less next run through, haha! Get this and get started.

### 5/5 — Great way to learn synthesis

*2022-06-21, version 1.6.605*

By testing your knowledge hands on all the way through, this approach really sharpens your listening skills and cements the effects of every module and knob in your brain. Fantastic.

### 5/5 — Just buy it

*2022-05-23, version 1.6.605*

If you’re a novice (like myself) looking to learn sound design, there’s nothing that even comes close to this app. Syntorial focuses on ear training and hearing how each parameter effects the synths sound - so that you can recreate the sounds in your head. Worth every penny.

### 5/5 — So Great

*2022-03-25, version 1.6.605*

I seriously love this app. It’s not perfect, but it’s so efficient. The thing I love most is how it trains your ear to determine what your hearing so you can then recreate it. I also love how it builds on previous lessons so you cement the material you’ve learned in your head.

### 5/5 — Syntorial + Building Blocks = Genius!

*2022-01-19, version 1.6.604*

The best, absolutely the best, music tutorials I have ever tried.
And now that Building Blocks runs on iPad as well, I have not time for my day job any more. But hey, I’m not going to be keeping it for much longer, right? 😂
