### 3/5 — has potential but is frustrating

*2025-02-23*

Some fun atmosphere for games. Hard to navigate, and the app does not save my customized soundscapes.

### 2/5 — Needs to play in background

*2024-07-20*

Why can’t the audio continue to play when i switch apps.

### 2/5 — Useful, but Not Useful

*2024-02-09*

It’s easy to tell this app has … seniority, to use a polite term.

It faithfully recreates the look, feel, and functions of the web version, bringing the powerful sound triggering and mixing and editing capabilities to my phone. My soundsets and campaigns are synced well, and it’s impressive how much flexibility is packed into this small form factor.

But in the end, I can’t use it. Whatever system APIs they had to contort and bend to make all of this sound engineering go are either not modern or not standard.

Sound does not persist in the background; pulling down my control center or locking the screen unceremoniously cuts off whatever is playing. More crucially, sound is not routed in such a way to let iOS know anything is actually playing, meaning I can’t AirPlay my soundscapes to my TV / sound system, or cast them to my DM’s chromecast, or punt them over to a bluetooth speaker. And there’s no Apple TV app on offer, so in the end there’s no way to get these lovely noises to my speakers.

While running this system on a phone is impressive and neat, actually using it in a real world setting is not something I can do right now.

### 3/5 — Good sound. Terrible interface.

*2023-09-22*

This app is simply not optimized for an iphone, maybe other devices are better suited but the display doesn't format correctly to fit my screen. The devs seem to have attempted to force the format of the browser player into a mobile app but the proportions get skewed to the point unuseability.

Secondly, the app does not continue playing in background so you cannot close the app or have autolock on without risking death to your party's immersion.

These fixes will drastically improve the app. Looking at other reviews it seems that this has been an issue for years that has not been addressed.

***
Additional info: I prefer the app to running syrinscape off my laptop because the stereo speakers I use (JBL partyboost) only work on a phone. This is another product review I'm about to write... :(

### 3/5 — AirPlay?

*2023-08-06*

Ohne AirPlay leider wenig tauglich. Coole Sound - Steuerung ist echt ok. Aber es braucht Konnektivität.

### 1/5 — Sad for mac users

*2023-05-13, version 1.4.13*

Does not support Safari and will not work on Imac to log in. It would have be good if they develop this to be Apple friendly.

### 1/5 — Lots of work needed

*2023-05-02, version 1.4.13*

There is no option for me to create an account to use the app, if I click not now, the app crashes.

Also the page is too big for my screen so I can’t see some of the apps content at the top of the page.

Was really hoping to use this app for DND

### 1/5 — No Airplay support

*2023-04-12, version 1.4.13*

DMs are left playing sounds via bluetooth with delay or tinny device speakers instead of AirPlay 2.

### 2/5 — Horrible interface

*2023-04-04*

It amazes me that, after all these years, the interface for this app is still so horribly designed. Many of the controls are located right on the edge of the screen, some are even cut off by the edge. Attempting to use these controls is difficult at best, often activating some of the iOS gestures.
How has Syrinscape not kept up with this
App as newer phones and iOS updates have released? It’s inexcusable.

### 2/5 — Great sounds, not at all easy to use

*2023-03-31*

Not optimized for iPhone - clipping on the screen corners and the volume button is in the “swipe application” zone. More work than you would want when you are running a session.

Stops playing when you switch applications

### 2/5 — Sound is great, selection is great, UI is horrible

*2023-02-02, version 1.4.13*

Subject says it all. The user interface feels like it came from a 1998 Gameboy. If they update the interface then I’ll give this a 5. But for now it’s just not usable.

### 1/5 — App für Geräuschkulissen ohne Sound. Cool

*2023-01-01*

App sieht gut aus. Ist kein Bisschen kostenlos aber zumindest funktioniert auch schon die kostenlose Version nicht… ohne Sound keine Spaß.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2022-12-07*

Of sound actually came out this would be great for my dnd sessions, but no sound comes out and I seem to not be the only person with this issue

### 3/5 — Format Fix

*2022-08-11*

The online app on my laptop is brilliant, but this version really needs some work. I can't even navigate to select what soundset I want...

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2022-07-18*

The app doesn’t play sounds it’s completely broken on iPad.

### 1/5 — Glitchy

*2022-07-12*

Seems like a cool idea, but, after downloading it and the free sound package, nothing played despite turning my phone sound to max and no messing around with the app settings.

### 2/5 — Not working with iPhone 13

*2022-07-08, version 1.4.13*

Not sure what to make of the app. It crashes, screen isn’t responsive. Seems overly complicated

### 1/5 — Virtually unusable. Cannot navigate at all

*2022-03-20, version 1.4.11*

Navigation on the iPhone is practically impossible. I can’t get to the sets I’ve purchased. I can never figure out how to get the right sounds to play when I get lucky either.

### 2/5 — Great Idea, Poor Execution

*2022-01-28, version 1.4.11*

If you are running prewritten adventures this app is great. The sounds are all amazing and really add immersion. However, as soon as you do anything off script in your game this experience is horrid.

First, the process of creating your own sound board is confusing and the idea of doing an audio tutorial in a character voice is, albeit amusing, really bad for a comprehension standpoint. When I finally figured it out the next step of adding my own sounds is equally bad.

I just got the DnD subscription and my lord there are so many sound boards for me to choose from. It makes it so hard to find what I’m looking for! Never mind the fact that on mobile the app isn’t sized correctly and the search bar is covered by my camera. I just tried to make a Drow temple and it took me nearly 2 hours to find what I needed.

Eventually I got what I needed, but found out my game was going to have to be played online. No worry I thought, I have Syrinscape on my pc as well. It turns out, however, that your sound boards don’t transfer from device to device even though it’s all on the same account. I thought I would just recreate my sound board on my pc, but it also turns out that there is essentially no indication of which sounds you have playing for each individual board! I’m sorry, but I’m not going through the 200 ish sound boards I got with the simple subscription to scavenger hunt for which sounds I chose. Why can’t they just be listed in the custom moods section with audio sliders like everything else?

The general response to all of this from Syrinscape has been to use their Online version. To this I have one response. Until you can put together a thorough tutorial in the app so I don’t need to look through an 11 part youtube series, no. When my subscription ends I will gladly switch to a new product. It’s no wonder Critical Role is starting to sponsor a new sound engine

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — It’s a trap!

*2026-07-04*

Paid for the subscription but was never able to log in to make use of it. Raised support tickets that were ignored no responses. Ended up having to force a refund through PayPal.

### 1/5 — não funciona

*2026-04-11*

fica na tela de início eternamente.

### 1/5 — Just doesn’t work.

*2025-07-21*

The UI isn’t built for mobile. That’s a problem. The sounds don’t make any sound at all, at any volume. That’s a broken application.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t do anything

*2025-04-07*

I downloaded the app and o can’t get any further than the front screen. No menu, no login, no service, nothing.

### 1/5 — Too clunky

*2024-10-31*

First try and the app was great. Neat sounds though hard to sort through.

So I subscribed (free first month) and things just got worse. Sounds wouldn’t play, the start up would freeze, and it was so hard to organise. There was I hoping to add flavour to a new campaign but it didn’t work.

I deleted and reinstalled but it remained buggy.

The app needs to be simplified. The artwork is great, but so what if the prime use is sounds and they get clogged up by the bulk of the app.

Hours spent trying to get the app working but in the end it was just way too frustrating.

How would I improve it?

Organise the sounds by theme (urban, wilderness, dungeon etc). If you’re running a pre-made adventure it’s okay but what if you doing a homebrew or players are on a tangent?

Clean up the interface and get fit easy to use - the artwork is good but what the apps purpose? Sound effects, so simplify the art.

Make the opening interface easy to get to the soundboard - too much is about subscription even after you subscribe! The app’s layout logic has to be addressed.

In all, neat sounds buried under the rubble of a clunky interface.

### 1/5 — All I get is a splash screen

*2024-08-13*

It’s a cute splash screen that never goes away. iPhone 14 Pro Max, iOS 17.5.1.

### 1/5 — Good to Worse

*2023-09-21*

I’ve really liked this program…until now. First issues came about when the only form of purchasing a sound set was through PayPal (a horrible thieving company). Now, I just reloaded the app after iOS 17 (doing a clean phone restart) and found many sounds have been removed from the app!?! Some were free from prior years others from purchases packs. I’m really saddened that this is the direction this company is going.

### 1/5 — Just doesn’t work

*2023-08-16*

Can’t download any soundscapes, proper useless. Avoid!

### 1/5 — Could be amazing, but it’s not

*2023-06-07*

The sound boards are amazing, and everything could be great, if the app wasn’t so sluggish to the point it’s completely unusable. Everything is slow, it’s almost impossible to scroll without clicking things inadvertently, animations are all slow and laggy, and the overall UX is really poorly designed.
Which is a shame, because the player really ruins all the effort that has been put in designing the sound boards.
Please do something about the player, and I’ll be more than happy to invest in sound boards. But now, I can’t afford fighting with my sound player while I’m GMing.

### 1/5 — No sound

*2023-05-21*

Can't get any sound out of it

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Update seems to have made a huge difference

*2024-02-14*

Definitely time to try this again!

### 5/5 — Utterly amazing

*2020-06-24*

Their best app yet!
Perfect for new or old ttrpg players! Whether your running a game as the GM/DM, or just wanting to bring a bit of spice to the table as a player, this app is such a valuable tool!
Yes you do have to make an account, but it’s so that you can keep up with your sounds across the platform!
There’s enough free options for a basic ttrpg session, and there’s a plethora of other downloadable options at a decent price!
The account is free! You have no reason not to use this app!

### 5/5 — Must have

*2020-04-04*

I love it. It’s a must have for all my rpg games. Easy to use, very customizable

### 5/5 — Melhor do gênero

*2019-11-30*

*2019-09-30*

Wer gern mehr Atmosphäre an seinen Tisch bringen will ist hier goldrichtig. Eine große Bibliothek an Soundsets und detaillierte Stimmungen für vorgefertigte Kampagnen (Pathfinder, D&D,...) begeistern meine Spieler jedes Mal aufs Neue. Unbedingt probieren.

Sollte man keinen Sound haben sollte man prüfen ob das Gerät stumm geschaltet ist.

### 5/5 — Great App!

*2019-09-19, version 1.4.2*

Very simply, this is the best soundboard out there for Fantasy RPGs. In many cases you can click one button and not have to look at it again for the whole scene unless something major happens.

Many of the latest Pathfinder and D&D adventures have pre-set soundsets so that this is very easy to use.
My players love the sounds and it really does take our game to the next level.

### 5/5 — Great atmosphere enhancement!

*2018-06-25, version 1.3.3*

This adds sooo much to our pathfinder games! I love that there are built in sets for different adventure paths! Just wish there was one for Curse of the Crimson Throne...

### 5/5 — No background mode?

*2018-06-25*

Sounds great but can’t figure out how to have it keep playing when I put the app in the background. I run my campaigns from my tablet, so being able to switch from music to encounter is pretty important for me!

### 5/5 — A must have for any pen and paper game

*2017-07-13*

I've been using Syrinscape for 2 years now for my weekly Pathfinder game. The atmospheric sounds are absolutely amazing. Players walk in to a quiet tavern and the sound of a crackling fire, a hushed conversation and a chair being moved fills the air. The local drunk shoots off his mouth and at the click of a button the bar brawl sounds erupt and swords start flying.

Using the Windows version of the app has one major advantage over the iPhone in that the iPhone doesn't support surround sound. That of course is not the fault of the developer. Having the app on my phone is great for any pickup game or at next Convention.

### 5/5 — Most important app I have

*2015-07-25*

I run games constantly, and a I play games all the time. I will use this app for both. Not only can I use this app to skyrocket the immersion/emotion/tension of a scene, but I can add sound effects as events happen, and even bring sound effects for when I play to inject more fun into the adventure. Sound does amazing things for gaming, and I think everyone who loves to game can only enhance their game with this.
