### 1/5 — Endless bugs

*2021-02-23, version 2.1.1*

This app works so poorly. I’m using the genie mini, just trying to execute basic pans for video. Constant disconnects, and worse, the record button often doesn’t appear at all after resync. Using the app every day in the field, I have to say that it’s truly awful. The old beta Genie app was way more reliable, worked in portrait mode, and was just all around superior. I’ve been a Syrp loyalist for years but this pain of using this app compelled me to write this review.

### 1/5 — Complete garbage app

*2021-02-20, version 2.1.1*

I spent an hour trying to update the firmware on my genie. I tried dozens of times on different devices before I finally got it to work. The stupid design turns their product into brick if you can’t update the firmware. I deleted , reinstalled the app countless times, tried to reset the device to factory defaults.
Do not buy their products until they fix this garbage app. What a disgrace !!

### 1/5 — App Crashes

*2020-10-08, version 2.0.0*

The app won’t even open on iOS 14. It crashes immediately. So continues the long legacy of horrible software from Syrp and the continuation of their of making really nice hardware that are no more useful than a paper weight. Worst investment I’ve ever made. I would sell all of my gear but I would feel the guilt Syrp clearly doesn’t have about taking someone’s money.

### 1/5 — App crashes constantly

*2020-09-17, version 2.0.0*

App crashed when I am in the “create content” section trying to set up the keyframes.

### 1/5 — Crashes

*2020-07-04, version 2.0.0*

App crashes on my iPhone SE with iOS 13.5.1 at start. Can see Syrp Logo for a second and than app dissapeares. Really annoying 🙁

### 1/5 — Will not fire using link cable

*2020-06-22, version 2.0.0*

My frustrations began right out of the box when prompted to update my Syrp Genie Mini II to latest firmware. Getting the device the maintain it’s connection was a nightmare. However, after some perseverance I successfully updated only to be confronted with a far larger and still unresolved challenge. The link cable simply will not fire my shutter as intended. I have the “2S” cable and attempted to use it to fire both a Sony A7iii and a Sony a6500. I followed Syrp website advice to a tee (I.e. set to manual mode in camera, turn off live view, make sure the cables are firmly pressed in, make sure photo preview is off, reset the Genie Mini ii by long pressing 5-6 seconds, etc.) none of it worked and I followed up by wasting a day trying adjustments with what seems like every setting on my cameras. I’ve never been so frustrated with a software and corresponding device. I really had high hopes for this. So disappointing.

### 1/5 — Syrp

*2020-06-21, version 2.0.0*

Awesome products but extremely unreliable. WiFi updates slow and often fail; connectivity to app will drop off; tilt movements can be jittery. These products are not cheap, for their price and back up I’d expect far greater reliability. Not happy.

### 1/5 — Trotz Update kein Bug-Fix

*2020-06-19, version 2.0.0*

App crasht beim Öffnen. Nicht verwendbar auf dem iPhone

### 1/5 — Could be great but very unreliable

*2020-04-16, version 1.3.2*

Already had this product fail on me half way though shoots with clients and also had it suddenly stop during long time lapses, rendering the footage useless and wasting precious days of filming.

### 1/5 — External aux needed

*2020-04-11, version 1.3.2*

Great device.
But, no external aux is a fail

### 1/5 — Unable to work in iOS

*2020-03-30, version 1.3.2*

While it works (loads in my Android device without problem) it just doesn’t in my iPad Pro and iPhone 11. When I try to open the app, it tries to go up, and simply disappears, very frustrating. And the awful firmware experience is still true, regardless of what device you use. I have been using Syrp equipment for years now, but getting to the point of jumping ship and using something else for needs. Wake up guys!

### 1/5 — Not working properly

*2020-02-29, version 1.3.1*

I am using the app with the Genie II Linear. The app crashes everytime I connect and click Create Content -> Keyframe! I can only use manual control!

### 1/5 — This is not working ( refuses to open app)iPhone 6

*2020-02-29, version 1.3.1*

Updated after prompted to do so in iOS 12.4.5. It simply refuses to own up the App !

Help !

### 1/5 — App Crashing IPhone 11 max pro

*2020-02-17, version 1.3.1*

The app crashes every time I open it. I’m operating on iOS 13.3. Is there a solution?

### 3/5 — Finally figured out firmware update

*2020-02-13, version 1.3.1*

I was frustrated like many but I finally got the firmware to complete its update. I turned off my phones WiFi assist and placed the phone as close as possible to each genie 2 mini. I made sure only one was powered on for each firmware upgrade. It worked! I had my phone literally leaning up against the genie 2 mini and did not get a module failure.

I gave this a three star rating. 5 stars for its smooth operation. 1 star for the firmware update process. It shouldn’t be this hard! But once updated, the genie 2 mini pan and tilt works great.

### 1/5 — Didn‘t fix bug but created it

*2020-02-12, version 1.3.1*

Version Information states it corrects a bug That crashes App on launching. For me the update created the bug. Not on one but on all my devices. So stating That the bug only affects a small number of users just makes me laugh. Genie II is by far the Most overpriced and unreliable piece of gear That I have ever purchased.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Avoid their products

*2025-11-30, version 2.2.0*

Money would have been better spent at Taco Bell. Thanks B&H Deal of The Day!

### 1/5 — Don’t buy it even second hand !

*2024-02-14, version 2.2.0*

The company basically died and has been bought by Manfrotto. For those who acquired their products it was a nightmare to use: unreliable wireless connection, the app was constantly crashing, after years waiting for updates they finally gave up and move on other projects. Some of us invested thousands of money in their devices that was unusable. I personally bought 1 Genie mini 1st gen and 3 Genine mini 2nd gen for a total of more than 800$. I have never been able to fully use it !

Now they are trying to take down the app, so if you still have their products you will basically have nothing to control it.

### 1/5 — Useless.. huge waste of money

*2023-06-22*

Manfrotto what are you doing with this garbage. So disappointed I spent so much money on a product thats completely unusable. The instructions don’t even tell you which app to download and then both of the apps cant find the genie at all. The genie doesn’t power on or off (just powered on all the time) so its just a rubber piece of garbage. I wish it wasn’t. It looked like it was gonna be much better. This makes me question Manfrotto’s other products. Oh and it doesn’t come with the cable to fire the shutter!! What the…. That’s the whole point of the product. So even if it did work I wouldn’t be able to use it until i spent some more money on the cable

### 1/5 — Missing funtionality

*2022-01-10, version 2.2.0*

Bulb ramping which was in the works since more than a year ago never arrived

### 1/5 — Can’t use my new product

*2021-12-01, version 2.2.0*

This app is horrible. The equipment I just purchased is useless because it requires an update and fails every time I try to update the hardware. It should not be nearly this difficult.

### 1/5 — My device is useless.

*2021-11-27, version 2.2.0*

Loved the Syrp Genie Mini (Pan) for help with video event coverage, however this thing from the start has always been glitchy. Firmware updates have always been a battle and now on its most recent update It’s left me stuck when I desperately need it tonight for a large event, time to start researching real professional alternatives.

Tossing this product in the garbage and deleting the app.

👍

### 1/5 — Est il possible de faire plus médiocre

*2021-10-19, version 2.2.0*

### 1/5 — It's not working

*2021-07-18, version 2.2.0*

It's not working it doesn't even open

### 1/5 — Katastrophal schlecht

*2021-06-26, version 2.2.0*

Die App crashs sofort beim Öffnen. Seit Monaten kein Update.

### 1/5 — kompletter flop, null support

*2021-06-09, version 2.2.0*

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great video tools!

*2022-05-25, version 2.2.0*

Iam usimg genie mini and genie one and SyrpLab are realy amaizing tools for my timelaps and product video.

### 5/5 — I like it!

*2020-06-30, version 2.0.0*

I might not be using this the same way others are but it works very well for panning and tilting a camera for video streaming events. I wish there was a way to connect and control the genies with WiFi instead of Bluetooth. The Bluetooth has range and reliability issues. They can be worked with, but not as rock solid as I would prefer.

Even something simple like, buy a router, set the ssid to xxxxx and the password to xxxxx, then connect the iOS device to that network, connect to the genies and you’re ready to go. I would think that would even make the update process go smoother. I’ve never had an update work on the first try.

Later, you can add a screen to the app to use Bluetooth to let the genie know which WiFi network to use and what the password is. That can wait. I’d gladly put a dedicated WiFi access point in the room with no internet connection just to get some range and connection stability.

### 5/5 — Effective and easy

*2019-10-11, version 1.2.4*

Easy to use, you have the possibility to control each unit independently, each can perform a separate timelapse. Start and end points allow for easy setup. The waypoints are difficult to understand at first but after a while it becomes clear and a fast way to put keyframes. Bugs were pretty rare for me since 40 timelapses and even if the app bugged, my timelapses continues without issues. Good job syrp, can’t wait for the bulb ramping feature!

### 5/5 — Polished Product

*2018-10-09, version 1.1.6*

The app is super stable and the 3axis setup works fantastic. You can see a lot of hard work went into the rebuild. Firmware update wasn’t smooth but it ended up being the wifi assist feature that was breaking it for me. Once that was off, everything went ok. Loving the repeatability of this setup and can not wait to throw it on the magic carpet this weekend and get some serious time lapse sessions in!

### 4/5 — funktioniert gut

*2023-11-21, version 2.2.0*

### 4/5 — Works Good But...

*2020-02-05, version 1.3.0*

Been using the app and a few of the Syrp products the last few months. Overall it gets the job done and the products are well designed minus the way too easy to accidentally turn on any of the products by hitting the power button - a firmware update should be done to address this where you have to hold the power button for a few seconds and not just barely touch it. If you’re traveling you can basically assume that the jostling caused the product to turn on and lose battery life.

As for the app, a new home screen interface should be done instead of the current setup. For example, the connect devices should be more prominently displayed and the back button shouldn’t be buried into the corner of the screen.

One other app recommendation... adding new features that were promised in the early fall should be pushed out faster. I get it, it takes some time for some coding but 6-8+ months later is a tad slow. Big feature that is needed that was promised is the holy grail time-lapse feature. It’s desperately needed, especially since other companies have it inter grated into their product out of the box. And when the Holy Grail ramping is released, please, PLEASE add sun, moon, North Star, Milky Way center tracking via the GPS location of the phone. It’s already implemented (to some degree) by a third party intervolmeter. One device/app to rule them all would be epic.

### 4/5 — Ikea rotating egg timer is better than Genie mini II out of the box

*2019-11-30, version 1.2.6*

UPDATE 30th Nov: Syrp support was very responsive - unfortunately the experience of bad device firmware coordination with this iPhone app versioning dented my confidence in this product. Had the firmware update via Bluetooth had not been borked out of the box the story may have been very different. :)

————-

Looking for Syrp to redeem themselves. A brand new Genie Mini II (£200+) out of the box is useless until the latest firmware is installed. However, the install must happen over Wifi/Bluetooth. The update is done via this Syrp app only and is buggy. After several hours reading forums and repeating the firmware update procedure (have tried waving a rubber chicken whilst hopping on one leg whilst restarting the app and making sure the iPhone is touching the Genie Mini II )- no success.

May have to return reluctantly to using an IKEA rotating egg timer. Shame.

### 4/5 — Good

*2019-04-12, version 1.1.17*

There is no turn table or infinite 360 spin in video just bounce

### 4/5 — Nice App - good start

*2019-03-14, version 1.1.16*

As a Genie mini owner have stepped up to the new magic carpet with linear motor. Love the build quality. The app has a lot to do and it’s a good start - love the keyframing concepts.

Feedback wise -
Love the preset idea. Would be good to be able delete old ones?
Look forward to all the new features. Aka auto ramping and working with the genie mini.

### 3/5 — Ungenaue Bedienung, nicht intuitiv

*2021-10-23, version 2.2.0*
