### 3/5 — Much better

*2026-04-02, version 7.2*

Helps a lot. Needs tweaks.

### 2/5 — Bummer

*2025-03-22*

Got this app so I can listen to screenplays during car rides and I can’t even do that. It has issues reading the text, formating the text, and even reads the pages out of order. What a shame and waste of time.

**Developer response:** Hello Brutal postman
We've just released an update that should fix Apple CarPlay.
The previous update also addressed the bug where pages were being read out of order.
Please, please contact us at tablereaddeveloper@gmail.com if you are still experiencing these issues.

### 3/5 — Is this a joke?

*2025-03-01*

Been looking for a script reading program. Finally managed to get a script imported, and it wants to SING the script to me in a very computer generated voice. I can't find anywhere to change the voice. I can bring up a big list of voices with preview and download buttons, but no matter what I click on it just sings it to me in the same computer voice. I'll *try* the pro version, but I'm not a professional script reader. I'm a writer who is on the final draft of my script and just need it read to me to pick up errors I may have missed while reading it on paper.

UPDATE: It wasn't clear that the free version used the voice applied to a setting on the iPhone, and not a voice chosen in the app.

**Developer response:** Hey Mbublitz
There is a trial period if you want to check out PRO.
You can subscribe /activate it (free trial is a week) and then immediately cancel the subscription so it doesn't roll over and charge you. Other wise it's $2.99 (USD) a month.
We license the voices, so we can't offer them in the FREE mode
We'll probably be offering a month free trial soon as a special offer around the Easter period, if you'd like to wait.
Or contact us at tablereaddeveloper@gmail.com and we can help you in other secret ways :)

### 2/5 — Very useful but glitchy

*2024-11-28*

I use this all the time to read scripts. Love it I can hike and read a script! But lately it keeps skipping back scenes and I listen and realize I already read that scene so it’s sort of like listening to Groundhog Day. If it would stop going that I would give it 5 stars.

**Developer response:** Hey Nicodermus
This issue is hopefully fixed now. Please update and let us know

### 4/5 — Useful In A Pinch, Glitchy

*2023-02-27*

I had been looking for a decent reader for scripts so I could listen to them while driving or while unable to devote my attention to a script. This was recommended online through a NoFilmSchool article, so I downloaded it and imported the script easy enough.

The Free version worked well enough, but about 5pages in stopped. It told me I had to wait for an ad to finish playing, but there was no ad. I refreshed the app twice, same issue. I decided to pay the $2.99 to try the Pro version, and luckily the free trial was available.

The Pro version worked much better, but still had some issues. Assigned voices wouldn’t always take, so characters would sound like each other until I manually set them a time or two. The script paused multiple times while playing with my screen off, and when I opened the app would reset to up to 20 pages EARLIER in the script.

The app crashed once, and the overall functionality and navigation reminds me more of a pre-iOS 6 app. Not bad at all, very useful in a pinch, but it isn’t going to be my go-to app for everything in the future if I can find something better.

**Developer response:** Thanks for the honest review JuniorProducer. If you'd like to contact us at tablereaddeveloper@gmail.com then we can work through these glitches/concerns/ issues when you have some time.

### 2/5 — Very glitchy pro version

*2023-02-22, version 5.6.3*

Doesn’t remember characters. Voices sound very artificial.

### 4/5 — Love it, could be better

*2022-06-30*

I wish there was a way to specify what was spoken. There are times I want to speed through and only want action lines read. Other times I want to focus on dialogue and don’t want action lines read. Something to consider.

### 2/5 — Buggy

*2021-11-02*

Too buggy to be practical. Wish it worked. :(

**Developer response:** Hi nine.x
We are sorry you're finding the app buggy. If you can spare some time we would love your help to resolve these issues. Are you able to contact us at tablereaddeveloper@gmail.com ?

### 3/5 — No Audio Export?

*2021-10-17, version 5.0*

I’m confused by this app. It seems like it’s sole useful functionality would be to export audio yet it doesn’t seem to allow you to do this

### 4/5 — (updated) need pro version but it's a valuable tool

*2021-05-14*

They don't make it clear but you need to buy the pro version if you don't want it to read dialogue names. I have noticed with so far just one screenplay what other people said about it crashing, I suspect because of the multiple instances of dual dialogue in that particular screenplay that it couldn't process - it gets everything right except for dual dialogue - and the voices don't sound natural except for Harold as the narrator - I'm guessing his voice got the most developer attention - but even in speaking roles he too doesn't sound very natural. It's okay, though. It gets the job done. You just need to hear words read to you, firstly in a voice different from the one in your head to see how it sounds to someone unfamiliar with the material, and secondly just to get through a read-through of your or even other work faster. Without aid, just reading at my own pace, I can get bored or tired. This way I can follow along. They say the best teaching tool is to read more scripts. Well, this way you can. I'm not giving a full 5 stars because I think the voices could sound a bit more natural. I think Harold as the narrator proves that. Nonetheless it is still a very valuable tool and worth the very little that it costs.

**Developer response:** Hi Brandon.
Did you get my message about reading names in Settings? It's a part of the PRO version.
Regards

### 4/5 — Game changer for proof reading your screenplay

*2021-02-08, version 4.2.2*

Whilst the UI in a bit clunky this is a game changer when it comes to editing and proofing your screenplay. No matter how many times I re-read over my script errors always creep in. Hearing the script read out makes these errors obvious.
Adding the voices also starts to give you a sense as to whether the dialogue is working. While the emotion / intent can’t be replicated in the app it is much better than trying to read it out yourself. For a solo screenwriter who is heading into a second or higher draft this is a great tool.
Hopefully the UI can be improved (pause button is too small and assigning character voices isn’t overly intuitive).

### 4/5 — A useful tool

*2020-03-27, version 4.0.0*

Been using this (pro version) for a while now and have found it invaluable in the screenwriting process, as it allows me to review the work in a way that makes better use of my very limited time (I often listen whilst running/exercising/doing housework) It also provides a different perspective to the work from reading (not as good as a real table read obviously. bit great as a quick rough alternative.) An export to wav/mp3 feature would be really useful as an addition.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Wasn’t diverse at all with the voices

*2025-06-04*

I got the app hoping it would take the characters and give each of them their own voice. I downloaded my script and it was a narrator. The entire script nothing else. And I clicked on the settings for it to not read the names multiple times and it still kept doing it. I assumed that most of this was with the pro version. So I bought the pro version and had the same trouble. Nothing changed and I could only get one voice to narrate the entire thing.
Waste of money.

**Developer response:** Hello CMurrayReiman
Please contact us at tablereaddeveloper@gmail.com.
The setting you are referring to is not available before the pro version is enabled.
So we do not know how you are ale to click on something that is not there in the free version.
If you have just purchased pro, then you are still in the free trial, so you have not wasted your money if you cancel the subscription now. Please google "How do i cancel an Apple subscription" if you do not know how to do this.

### 1/5 — Poor quality and impossible to cancel subscription

*2025-01-24, version 6.5.3*

Don’t get this app.

### 1/5 — Constantly Crashes

*2023-01-03*

Downloaded this app to learn lines for an upcoming play. Saw all of the features it listed and was going to purchase Pro after trying it out.

Unfortunately, I never was able to use it. When I try to import any script into the app, it immediately crashes. When I re-open the app, it shows that the script is there, but when I try to open the script, it crashes again. All scripts are in PDF files and are able to be opened in similar text parse/reading apps.

If there is a fix to this, I’m happy to give it a try.

**Developer response:** Hi TySands
We have put out another update yesterday 5.6.2. This fix's the crash.
If you are still having issues then please contact us at tablereaddeveloper@gmail.com.
We can get to the bottom of your concerns promptly.

### 1/5 — App crashes when importing scripts

*2022-11-14*

My iPhone 14 pro max is running 16.0.3
The app crashes every time I attempt to import a script or pdf of any kind. I have tried reinstalling and importing scripts from several other methods but all crash the app and the script is never imported.
This makes it functionally unusable on this current phone and IOS version.
Worked great on previous IOS versions. I hope the developers can fix this problem because I like this app.

**Developer response:** Hi Dismayed. Are you able to check the update has fixed the issue described above and adjust your response accordingly. If you are still having issues then please contact us at tablereaddeveloper@gmail.com

### 1/5 — Very difficult to unsubscribe

*2022-08-31*

I have been trying to unsubscribe for over a month now and customer service has not responded to me. It’s not easy (or possible?) to unsubscribe via the app UI.

**Developer response:** Hello grac153
Subscriptions are handled by the App Store, not our app so we are unable to offer an Unsubscribe option within the app. This link should help you https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT202039. What customer service email were you trying to reach out to? If you still need to contact us email tablereaddeveloper@gmail.com

### 1/5 — DO NOT OPEN - DAMAGES ALL FINAL DRAFT FILES!!!

*2022-05-22*

I just finished up an episode for a show that I have been working on for 3 weeks straight. Upon downloading this app to hear it read from an outside perspective, EVERY SINGLE FINAL DRAFT DOCUMENT/FILE ON MY COMPUTER WAS CORRUPTED!!! I know for a fact it was this program because it has never happened, in my entire life of 16 years of using final draft, until the very moment I imported my first screenplay into this app.

Save yourself the trouble, I now am going to lose an entire nights worth of writing as FinalDraft office’s are closed so no help is available until tomorrow. DO NOT USE THIS PROGRAM.

**Developer response:** Hi Thomdmusic.
The app does not write to any files, please contact us at tablereaddeveloper@gmail.com so we can figure out how to retrieve your files.
If you have imported it from an email then the app saves a copy of this file to its local drive.
If you open them from your iCloud drive then the app saves a local temp copy of the file to open.
So in both cases the original file is never opened and read by the app.

### 1/5 — needs fewer features, better functionality

*2021-10-13*

Every few months I give this app another shot, sometimes it works better than others. However, the most recent update has resulted in an app that only scans through my script while repeating the same ad pitch over and over. If I interrupt it, I’m locked out of the app. If I let it go, it just keeps scanning my script over and over, pausing every few seconds to play the ad pitch again. I can’t believe there’s even a pro option with an app this unusable.

**Developer response:** Hello DorkStranger

It sounds like you've found a bug/glitch. Are you able to contact us at tablereaddeveloper@gmail.com so we can try and fix this with your help?

### 1/5 — Totally not helpful

*2020-08-01, version 4.1.0*

Can’t change voices, can’t edit the script. The female voice was just reading fast like Siri

### 1/5 — Unusable

*2019-12-07*

I tried to use this app even with the pro version and it was terrible. First off, very clunky interface that loves to give you a hard time. Second, the reader skips the first page of my script AND multiple sections within. Third, the voices. It’s hard trying to pick a voice for your cast when you can’t preview them and also every time you set a voice it goes right back to the script even if you want to set the whole cast. Better off using a general text to speech reader, unfortunately.

**Developer response:** Hi KitKatKyr.
Thanks for the feedback. We are sorry tableread is not what you were expecting. Please feel free to contact us at tablereaddeveloper@gmail.com directly, as we would very much like to work with you to resolve these issues. We can send you a link to the testing program where we have fixed the voice selection bug that takes you back to the script. I'm not sure why you are unable to preview voices. There is a preview button on the bottom left when assigning a voice and an entire page devoted to downloading and previewing voices. What device are you using?

### 1/5 — Beware

*2019-05-11, version 3.2.0*

This app is glitchy. Constantly freezes slow to carry out settings. Character assignments are faulty. I have pro version and it is not worth it.

### 5/5 — Ethically-sourced voice AI for screenwriters on a budget

*2026-05-10*

I was looking for an app that featured ethically-sourced voices that sound more realistic than the system voices on my device, but could also recognize and read screenplays. Tableread uses voices from Acapela Group, which has its own proprietary AI model, and its voice actors are compensated.

The only other option is the pricey but beautiful WellSaid, but it doesn’t recognize screenplays and is cumbersome. Tableread Pro is the only option that ticks every box: ethical, workable, economic.

My only complaint with Tableread is that you cannot turn off autoplay. I assume this is because most people use it to rehearse lines so it’s designed to keep going. I’m a screenwriter, though, so I just want to hear my screenplay read aloud because it helps the writing process.

Overall, it’s a great little app. Would love to see a desktop version that has more options for writers like me, but that’s ok.

**Developer response:** Thanks Ducktemp

If you would like to contact us at tablereaddeveloper@gmail.com and we can look at adding an auto-play setting for you.
Just need to know which auto-play you are referring to.

### 5/5 — Very useful

*2024-06-16*

I use this all the time to read scripts. Love it I can hike and read a script!

**Developer response:** Thanks for the review Nicodermus, much appreciated.
Please feel free to reach out to us at tablereaddeveloper@gmail.com if you have any feature requests. (or find any bugs)

### 5/5 — Great Tool for Playwrights!

*2024-04-09*

This is an invaluable tool for playwrights. I've used it to get a sense of how my play sounds while I'm still writing it, during the revision process. Of course it's always best to have it read by live actors, but it's not feasible to get something like that together repeatedly, especially in the early drafts.

I can't recommend Tableread enough for use as a revision tool. Well worth the subscription!

### 5/5 — Love it!

*2023-01-11, version 5.6.2*

They say the quickest way to never hear from someone is to send them a script. It’s sort of true because people hate taking two hours to read. This app reads the scripts and allows me to listen while driving or going on a walk or cleaning.

**Developer response:** Thanks for the review Nicodermus, much appreciated.
Please feel free to reach out to us at tablereaddeveloper@gmail.com if you have any feature requests. (or find any bugs)

### 5/5 — Great app and fast response

*2022-12-04*

The app had a glitch when you couldn’t upload the pdf- but a few days later I noticed an update. When I reached out via the help feature - they were swift to respond and kind to answer! Have been using this app on and off for a few years now- tbh the best app for rehearsing before an audition, a scene, or shoot!

**Developer response:** Thanks Elle
We are only a small team here at tableread so any community feedback and input is amazing and invaluable.

### 5/5 — Full potential unlocked

*2022-07-28*

I finally got to use the app to its full benefits and it’s a great! I commend the developers for walking me through to make sure I unlocked its full potential.

**Developer response:** Hello larsav54
Please contact us here at tablereaddeveloper@gmail.com and we can help you with adding different voices for each character.

### 5/5 — Exactly what I was looking for

*2022-06-29*

Super cool app! I'm not a frequent script-reader by any means but this so gracefully imported my pdf script, picked up all the different characters and narrator
Some UI pieces are a bit quirky but it's because it has so many options!
Helps me listen to a script on my commute

### 5/5 — Exceedingly useful

*2019-07-13*

I’ve read critical reviews, but I cannot corroborate the issues. If you format a script according to industry standard, use of the app couldn’t be easier. Of course what’s at the core is the hearing sides read in different voices. That gets at composition, and that’s where the power of this app lies. If you want to write plays or screen plays, this app is a must-have compositional aid.

**Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback Moze45.
We are in the process of adding functionality to edit a line within the app. So you don't have to keep importing a script for minor changes.
Our third party voices partner has also supplied us with an updated version and new hi-res voices.
The down side will be that previously downloaded voices will need to be downloaded again :(.
If you would like to join out testing program them email us at tablereaddeveloper@gmail.com

### 5/5 — New version is fantastic

*2018-02-09, version 2.1.1*

This app is a must for any screenwriter or industry professional.

### 5/5 — Love this app

*2017-11-09, version 2.0.5*

I have a brain disease which makes reading and writing problematic. I listen to the scripts I’m writing a lot more than I read them. Tableread is a wonder app for me given my situation.
