## What is Taigi?

Look words up, and learn them. The Ministry of Education's Taiwanese dictionary in full, plus a course through the 700 most common characters.

Taigi is an offline app for Taiwanese (台語), built on the Taiwan Ministry of Education's open dataset《臺灣台語常用詞辭典》. On the dictionary side, every entry comes with its Mandarin gloss and example translation, and with its audio, so you can look up and listen entirely offline. On the learning side, you start from listening drills for pronunciation and work through the 700 most common characters, one at a time.

- Search: when the Ministry of Education dictionary has no match, three more dictionaries are now searched. Two of them are new — the Ministry's Taiwanese Taigi glossary of school subject terms, and PTS Taigi's lexicon of modern coinages — covering classroom vocabulary and present-day words like mouse, menu, and earned run average. Results are grouped by dictionary, so you can see which one each word comes from.
- Search: scrolling the results now dismisses the keyboard, so you no longer have to close it before you can read the words further down.
- Study: the menu is organized into three parts — today's study, the 700 common characters, and Tai-lo basics. Tai-lo basics is now five units instead of fourteen rows; tap one to go straight into it, and you can see how far along you are inside each unit.
- Study: the 700 common characters now lists every word at once. You can narrow the list to what you have studied, and progress is shown for each block of a hundred. The separate "words studied" page has been folded in here.
- Study: swipe left to hide "study from bookmarks", and turn it back on from the Info tab.

### 3.2.0 — 2026-09-02

- Search: the app no longer opens with the keyboard up. You land on the category browser and tap the search field when you actually want to look something up, instead of dismissing the keyboard first every time.
- Study: words you bookmark in the dictionary become your own review deck, so the words you look up are the words you learn. A new list also shows everything you have studied and how well each one has stuck. Learning from bookmarks is part of Taigi Study.
- Camera: point at a page and the word nearest the center is picked out for you. Tap anywhere to look it up, with no need to aim at a small box. When a whole block of text is recognized, tapping lists the words it read so you can pick one from them.
