## What is Takebase?

Takebase is where a band works on a track together. Record it, listen to it, mark the bits that need work, and stack the next take on top. It lands on the track it belongs to instead of the bottom of a chat thread.

RECORD

Record straight into the app, from an album or from the track you are adding to. Play to a metronome if you want one: set the tempo with the arrows, by dragging the number, or by tapping it in time, and count in a bar, two or three at that tempo. The waveform flashes on every click and a bar under it shows the beat. The check keeps it, the bin throws it away, and nothing uploads until you keep it.

Recorded somewhere else? Share it in from Voice Memos, Files, or anywhere with a share sheet. m4a, mp3, wav and aiff all work.

LISTEN AND COMMENT

Play a take on a waveform you can scrub. Double tap the timeline to leave a comment at 1:23, and everyone else sees it pinned there. Reply, or tick it off when it is done.

A comment belongs to the take it was left on, so it never slides onto a new mix of a different length and points at the wrong bar.

When a comment or a new take lands, the band gets a notification.

PRACTISE

Press and hold the waveform and drag to loop a section. Move the handles while it plays; the loop turns round without a gap or a click. Drag a playing take and the sound follows your finger, so you can find the bar by ear.

Add a click to a take and Takebase finds the beats in the recording itself, so it stays with the band through a tempo that drifts. The beats are drawn on the waveform, and one tap fixes a wrong grid.

TAKES

Takes stack newest first, each carrying the date it was actually recorded. Switch between them in the player and compare without leaving the track. Rename a take, sort them, choose the one the track plays, or move it to another track or out into a track of its own.

YOUR LIBRARY

Albums hold tracks. Tracks hold takes. No folder tree, no session layer. A wall of covers or a list, dragged into the order you want, searchable, and every row says how many takes it has and how long they run.

Mark a track or a take with a colour to find it again. Everybody in the album sees it.

WORKING TOGETHER

A share link opens the album in Takebase for anyone who has the app, and offers the app to anyone who does not. Tapping it joins that person to the album. No roles to hand out: everybody in an album can add takes and leave comments. A link lasts a day.

Adding people is always free. The limit is on audio, never on people.

LISTENING

A take is kept on your device after the first play, so a track keeps playing where the signal does not. Playback carries on from the lock screen and over AirPlay.

Whatever you send is converted to 192 kbps AAC, and that copy is what Takebase streams.

WHAT IT COSTS

Free up to 30 minutes of stored audio. Takebase Pro raises that to 15 hours, delete a take and its minutes come back. Going over the free limit pauses uploads and playback until you make room or subscribe. Nothing is deleted.

PRIVACY

No ads. No tracking. Nothing sold. Your recordings are private to the album they sit in and the links you choose to send.

SUBSCRIPTION

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.0.6 — 2026-09-22

Takebase in a browser

Open takebase.studio/app on a laptop and your albums are there. Sign in, listen, comment at a timecode, write a track's notes, manage members and send a share link. On a phone the browser stays a listening app, and the rest is here.

Record from the Action Button

Set the Action Button to Takebase and a take starts recording without unlocking anything first.

Comments stay where you are

A long comment opens in place now instead of taking over the screen. The whole row lights when you press it, you can copy it on a long press, and you can read what people said on other takes of the same song.

Also

• Takes say how long ago they arrived, 4min ago or 3 days ago, instead of a date
• A take's tempo, and its key when the app is sure of it, sit under the song title
• A track's notes say who changed them last, and the band hears when they change
• Every take says who uploaded it
• Hold a track to reorder it, on any device
• The import screen is built around the file you picked

### 1.0.5 — 2026-09-17

Band and guests

A share link now comes in two kinds. Band gives someone everything the album can do. Guest lets them listen, loop a section and play along with the click track, without adding or changing anything. Band members can change and remove guests.

Choose what each person can do

Tap a member in album settings to turn single things on or off for them: recording, comments or downloading.

Take a recording with you

Save a track or a take from its ⋯ menu to Files, send it over AirDrop, or open it in another app.

Keeps playing after a call

When a phone call, an alarm or Siri interrupts a take, it carries on by itself once they are done. Pulling out headphones still pauses it.

In the car

Drag the progress bar on the CarPlay screen to move through a track. Hold the back or forward button to sweep through it, hearing short bites as it goes.

Also in this version

• A track that is still uploading is a normal row: rename it or write its notes while the file goes up
• Notes are on the track menu, so you can read a track's words without opening the player
• An imported recording keeps the date it was recorded, not the day you imported it
• Share links open on takebase.studio now, and older links still work
• Scan the code on a Takebase flier with the Camera app to get Pro free for a while
• Storage in Settings counts in hours, the same as the storage meter

### 1.0.4 — 2026-09-13

Overdub — play along with a take

Open a track, choose where to come in, and record over what is already there. Takebase captures your part against the take playing underneath, lines the two up, and plays them back together before you decide anything. Keep it and it becomes the track's newest take; bin it and go straight round again without leaving the sheet. A dial sets how loud your part sits against the take. Run past the end of the song and the recording carries on, so you can add an outro to a track that did not have one.

Ask Siri for it

Say the name of a track and Siri plays it, with the phone locked and the app closed. An album name works too and starts it from the top. "Play a random song on Takebase" and "surprise me" pick one for you, and "play what's new in Takebase" starts on the newest take the band has put up — the one request you cannot phrase as a name, because you do not know yet what it is called.

In the car

Takebase is on CarPlay: your albums, the tracks inside them, and what is playing now. Previous and next step between tracks on the car screen and on the lock screen, where they used to jump five seconds, and the artwork stays up when the track changes.

On iPad

The album on the left, the player on the right, both at once, instead of one covering the other.

In the phone's own search

Type a track or an album name into the home screen search and the band's recordings come up with everything else on your phone. Tap one and it plays.

Notes

Every track can hold its own words now, written and read on the player while you listen.

Comments you can write properly in

• Return breaks a line instead of sending, so a comment can be a whole verse
• Bold, italic, headings, bullet and numbered lists, and links
• A full-screen editor when the bar is too small for what you are saying
• An hour to fix a typo — you can edit your own comment for an hour after leaving it

Also in this version

• A colour you put on a track or a take is the band's now, so everyone sees it
• A share link starts with a code the person next to you can scan
• An upload carries on after you leave the app
• A finished mix draws a waveform you can read instead of a solid block
• Album art fills the top of the track list
• A new album lands at the top of your library
• Sharing a link says "Copied", so you can see it worked
• The recorder's bin sets you up to record again instead of closing the sheet

### 1.0.3 — 2026-09-08

A click that follows the take. Add a click to a track and Takebase finds the beats in the recording itself, so it stays with the band through a tempo that drifts instead of marching past it. Turn it on from the ••• menu on a track or in the player. If it lands on the wrong grid — half time, double time, or a shuffle read as something else — one tap fixes it, and the beats it found are drawn on the waveform so you can see what it heard.

A metronome while you record. Set the tempo with the arrows, by dragging the number, or by tapping it in time. The count-in is bars at that tempo now instead of seconds, so there is something to come in on. The waveform flashes on every click and a bar under it shows which beat you are on. Change the tempo or switch the click on and off in the middle of a take.

Notifications, and they take you to the right place. When somebody comments on a take or adds a new one, your phone says so, and tapping it opens the track, scrolls to what they left and lights it up. Settings › Notifications turns them off altogether or mutes one album.

Colour a track or a take. Five colours in the ••• menu and a coloured bar down the edge of the row, for whatever you use them to mean. They stay on your phone; nobody else in the band sees them.

Put takes in the order you want. Sort takes from the player's ••• menu when a track has more than one. That order is the band's, so everybody sees it.

Tap a take to play it, and double tap the one you are hearing to make it the track's default.

Songs are called tracks now, everywhere.

The library is a wall of covers. Square tiles, edge to edge, with the album's name on the artwork.

Smaller things: the waveform has friction under your finger while you scrub or move a loop handle, a new track goes to the top of its album, the player opens the moment you tap a playing row instead of waiting to see if you tap again, a rename shows straight away, and you can write to us from Settings with the build number already in the subject.

### 1.0.2 — 2026-09-02

Record straight into Takebase. There is a record row at the foot of every album and in the player's ••• menu, so an idea no longer has to go through Voice Memos first. Count yourself in at 1, 3 or 5, watch the trace as you play, and tap it to pause and carry on. The check keeps it, the bin throws it away.

Loop a section to practise it. Press and hold the waveform and drag, and you get a region with handles you can move while the music keeps going. It turns round without a gap and without a click, because playback on iPhone is running on a new audio engine. Exit puts the take back the way it was.

Drag the waveform and the sound follows your finger. Scrubbing a playing take now plays what is under your thumb instead of going quiet, so you can find the bar you meant by ear. Because press and hold now arms a loop, adding a comment is a double tap.

Notifications. When somebody leaves a comment or adds a new take, the album hears about it, and a tap on the notification opens the song. Mute an album you would rather not hear from, or turn either kind off under Settings, Notifications.

Move a song or a take. A song can go to another album or become takes of another song, and a take can join another song or become a song of its own. No audio moves, so it takes the same moment whatever the recording weighs.

See who else is in an album. Faces under the album's name, and the Members list is open to everybody in the album now instead of only its owner.

Smaller things: every take carries the date it was actually recorded, read out of the file, so a Voice Memo keeps the night it happened. Takes can be renamed. A song can be deleted from the big player. The album header lost its two buttons and gained a couple of songs' worth of room, every ••• menu was redrawn to one shape, and an album that used to fill up with spinners now finishes downloading.
