It is a great way to learn ASL at your own pace and on your own time. It’s very easy to sign up for classes. I also love they that they send you reminders before the class starts. The interpreters I’ve had are great. There has been some connection issues this is why I give 4 stars instead of 5. He even stayed past the allotted time to talk specifically to me and others who had questions. I like Takelessons because they have so many teachers to choose from. Each teacher has a profile and ratings to help you decide. Takelessons even has local teachers for face to face lessons. This app is really helpful for finding the right tutor and managing my lessons. I recommend it for all language learners who want to build their confidence for class or a vacation. ### 5/5 — Great interaction *2018-10-07, version 1.38.0* The conversational class was exactly what I’d hoped for when I signed up. She had prompts to help direct the conversation and helped us communicate better. I really recommend taking a few of these lessons if you are going to be hosting for the holidays. You can learn how to cook homemade ice cream, cookies and cakes. By using this app I attend classes and talk to real teachers and it motivates me a lot. Actually, there're no more courses and services that suit me so well. Once, after visiting the exhibition of acrylic painting, I looked through the subjects in this app and when I saw acrylic painting lessons I decided to try, because the price was not very high. My teacher is an artist, she has her own step-by-step program for beginners. All the classes are held in a positive way, she loves sharing art tips and helps to implement any ideas. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Garbage app does not work *2022-08-16, version 1.65.12* This app literally doesn’t work on iOS. I had to cancel two lessons and spend a bunch of time troubleshooting. I called them and they said the app isn’t working on iOS! Why were we not notified. And why would they make updates without testing on iOS. Stay away from the app, and stay away from take lessons. There are plenty of other competitors that don’t waste your time. ### 1/5 — If the app doesn’t work it’s on you. *2022-05-16, version 1.65.12* TakeLessons the company does not stand by this app and will provide you with zero support if it doesn’t work or breaks during a lesson. My wife recently missed the first 15 minutes of an hourlong (and not cheap) private lesson because the TakeLessons app wasn’t syncing properly with our account, so she had to monkey around with Zoom links and do the lesson that way. It was a known issue, TakeLessons agreed that their app broke and that was why my wife missed part of the lesson, but they would not refund her the cost of the lesson or take any other action. Their response was, “Don’t use the app then.” TakeLesson’s explicit policy is that the app is as-is, if it breaks then it’s on you and the instructor to figure something else out. If that causes an unacceptable delay then you can either cancel the lesson or just eat the loss of time. TakeLessons the service is good. I’ve only ever used it to set up private lessons but have done that for several years. I’ve found instructors for a variety of topics both for myself, my spouse, and my kids. But what I like about it is that it’s all unified into one calendar and interface. If I need to manage my own calendar entries and correspondence and Zoom links and such, then it’s not clear what service the company is really providing over just arranging stuff with the instructor through email without an intermediary skimming money off the top. ### 1/5 — Needs work *2022-05-10, version 1.65.12* The you can’t rotate your screen vertically which makes it uncomfortable. And they don’t let you see yourself properly on the screen . You get a small window to see yourself but it’s so small . I want to make my window bigger to see if my singing face matches with the teacher but the won’t let you . ### 1/5 — Not what you expect *2020-02-22, version 1.57* When you look on the preview pages before you get this app it says that you speak with your teachers etc. Wrong! I was very, very disappointed to find that you have to pay premium to interact and ask your teachers questions. When I’m in the “class” my teachers don’t even recognize I’m in the “class room” because I don’t have the video and typing on. (And it’s really hard to learn when you can’t ask a question) The teachers are not bad some are more helpful than others. But I’m very disappointed that I can’t learn well. Please make this a better experience for others. ### 1/5 — New 20 mins is horrible *2019-02-26, version 1.43.0* The take lessons teachers are awesome! So these stars are not a reflection of them because they have no control over the new changes. It would have been 5 stars for the app as a whole if they would have kept the 45 mins classes! I have recommended this app to a lot of friends that enjoyed it up until these rushed 20 min. classes. I prefer quality over quantity the teachers can no longer take their time with you when you’re struggling through class now they can’t do anything but try to run through the information so you would at least know what the lesson consists of. We'd love for you to come back and learn with us and our community. ### 2/5 — Unhappy Student *2021-10-09, version 1.65.11* I’d been taking free and paid private ASL classes for almost ten years, and I just recently learned Microsoft ‘acquired’ TakeLessons, and now I’ve lost my Premium membership because, “It just wasn’t sustainable.” Now I can only watch and listen but can neither participate nor use the Chat Box even though it says: Chat is in view only mode for Basic members.” Learning ASL was neurotherapy for me after a near fatal hemorrhagic stroke. It was also my social connection to the outside world. My therapist wants me to reconnect with my ASL students, but obviously I can’t. However, an error occurred while trying to verify my email address. I’ve resent the email countless times, received it and clicked on the link, then returned to the app. But it still continues to say I need to verify my email. I’m very disappointed as I thought this would be a fun learning experience. ### 4/5 — Great teacher *2020-01-16, version 1.55.0* The teacher is awesome, I just think it was a large group making the class a little difficult to advance more. But I highly recommend the class and the teacher, she really has a great attitude while teaching and wants to involve everyone!! ### 4/5 — Why only 18+ ? *2019-04-11, version 1.46.0* I have not tried this because, well, I don’t have the age to. So far trying it without the teachers the app actually looks pretty well made!! I have big dreams of being a singer.. but I’m not 18. Why not a lower age? If your trying to inspire people to do the things they love then why not start earlier? Practice before your too old. I’m not saying kick it down to immature 12 year olds, but maybe you guys could be the reason somebody got big? Or get more people on your app then 500. Of course you have the option to take private lessons if you’d like 1 on 1 time and to improve more rapidly, but honestly a leisurely pace of the free classes has been more than enough for me learning ASL. There are video modules as well as free classes, all full of excellent information. And there are LOTS of topics to study. I am a basic member, not premiere. It may just happen because my internet is slow, but when she called on individuals to sign words, the student didn’t show up up on my screen until he or she was halfway through the word. Of course it helped that they did it again. Some students were so small or in poor light that I could not see them well when they were fingerspelling. Vanessa didn’t always identify the word. She would sometimes say “That’s right.” For those of us who don’t have premiere, could she be sure to identify the word? Thanks. I love that I get 5 free classes and I’ve been doing that for a couple months until my husband saw how much I loved it and decided to get me an annual subscription. I take advantage of it by signing up for lots of classes when I can. I love the instructors, the teaching, and the timing of the classes are perfect.
