## What is Talking Tiles?

TalkingTiles turns a tap on a picture into a spoken word, so a child who does not speak can still say what they think, want, and feel.

Tap a tile and it says its word out loud. Tap a few more and they line up in the strip along the top; press play and the whole sentence is spoken at once. There is nothing to set up first and nothing to learn before you start.

WHAT IS INSIDE

Fourteen boards of illustrated symbols covering everyday vocabulary: food, feelings, people, places, verbs, clothes, colors, toys, letters and numbers. Two hundred and forty symbols in all, drawn for this app.

Save the phrases you reach for most, so "I need the bathroom" is one tap instead of five.

MADE TO FIT THE CHILD

Choose how many tiles fill a row, from three big targets to twelve. Set the symbol size and the label size separately. Pick the voice, and adjust how fast and how high it speaks.

Thirty-one languages, switched in a tap, with the tile labels and the voice changing together.

FOR PARENTS AND THERAPISTS

Put a PIN on Settings so a curious tap cannot change the voice or wipe a saved phrase. The boards stay fully usable, so locking Settings never stops a child communicating.

PRIVACY

TalkingTiles collects nothing. No account, no sign-up, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking. It makes no network requests at all, so it works everywhere, including on a plane or in a waiting room with no signal.

THE SYMBOLS ARE YOURS TOO

All two hundred and forty symbols are released under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. Print them, remix them, put them in your own worksheets. The only condition is credit.

TalkingTiles is a communication aid, not a medical device, and it does not replace assessment by a qualified speech and language therapist.

### 5/5 — Incredible that this is free

*2026-09-16*

I’ve seen other apps that do similar things, but this one being free is so generous. Thank you!

### 5/5 — Talking

*2026-09-14*

Simple, free, and it just works. My child taps a picture and the app says the word out loud, and putting a few together to make a sentence is easy. No account, no ads, works without internet, and the parent lock on settings is a nice touch. Saving the phrases we use most has been a big help. Great app for a child who has trouble speaking.

## Version history (last 2 releases)

### 1.1 — 2026-10-20

Rearrange the tiles on any board

• Put the words your child uses most where they expect to find them. Tap the rearrange button at the top of any board, then hold a tile and drag it, or tap a tile and then tap the spot where it should go.
• Rearranging is behind the grown-up check, so a child can't scramble their board by accident.
• Reset one board from the bar shown while rearranging, or every board at once in Settings → Tile order.

Plus small fixes and improvements.

### 1.0 — 2026-09-11
