## What is Tanuki?

Tanuki teaches Japanese the way it actually sticks: you produce the answer instead of picking it off a list.

Start at zero with hiragana and katakana, tracing each glyph stroke by stroke until your hand knows it without thinking. Then climb the JLPT ladder, N5 through N1, at whatever pace your memory can actually hold.

WHAT IS INSIDE
10,905 words with audio. 2,387 kanji with stroke order and component breakdowns. 72 grammar points. Every word carries its pitch accent, so you learn how a word sounds, not just how it is spelled. Furigana sits above every kanji you have not met yet, so no screen is ever a wall.

HOW THE REVIEWS WORK
Scheduling runs on FSRS, a modern spaced repetition algorithm that brings a word back right before you would have forgotten it. Miss a day and your reviews quietly reschedule. There is no streak to protect, so nothing breaks when life gets in the way.

Multiple choice appears once, on first exposure. After that you type the answer on a Japanese keyboard. It is harder, and that is the whole point. Recognition fades fast. Production is what survives.

NO ROMAJI CRUTCH
Romaji appears only while you are learning kana, then it goes away. Every screen after that is kana and kanji, the way Japanese is actually written. You will be reading real script within your first week.

GRADED READING
Short passages built only from words and grammar you already know, so you read whole sentences early and keep reading as your vocabulary grows.

Every kanji reading now has audio: tap one on a kanji card to hear it. Discover has thirteen new graded stories, N4 to N1, in all ten languages. The month calendar in Progress now shows every date and what each mark means. Japanese words inside explanations stand out the same way everywhere, and never break mid-word. Answer cards and keyboard keys have clearer outlines, every replay button looks the same, and there are small fixes in Notebook, Settings and Tanuki Pro.

### 1.0.8 — 2026-09-06

The Discover tab now opens on a story picked for you: the one you stopped halfway, the next one you can already follow, or one you finished a while back for a second read. Finished stories get a small 済 seal on the cover, and your reading history is saved on your device. Reaching a new level now comes with a short celebration, and if the next level is part of Tanuki Pro, the level card says so before you tap.

### 1.0.4 — 2026-09-01

Some of the most basic words in Japanese were missing from the decks: ある, いる, です, 日本 and fifteen more. They are in now, each with audio, a memory hook and a translation in every language. The reader got a furigana correction pass too, so 私 reads わたし and 何 reads なに where the sentence calls for it. And three word recordings that could come back silent now play, including for anyone who had already downloaded them.

### 1.0.2 — 2026-08-27

The kana module now teaches を the way Japanese actually says it, and typing a long kanji reading can no longer fail you early. Review counts now invite you to one day of practice instead of showing the whole backlog. Add a faster start on slow networks and plenty of translation polish across every language.
