### 3/5 — Missing Core Music Memos App Features

*2026-06-06*

Claims that this is a Music Memo app replacement are a bit misleading.
There is no beat or time signature detection, no tempo beat mapping, no chord detection, no virtual drummer and no virtual bass player.

### 3/5 — Good app but not very unique

*2026-04-25, version 4.2.4*

It’s a great app, but without premium it’s like…not any different from voice memos. Really to do anything unique you need premium. But it is easy to navigate and it’s very nice otherwise

### 4/5 — Amazing tool with some suggestions

*2026-04-22*

First off I just want to say that if you make music you NEED this app. It’s so versatile in holding all of your bounces, ideas, and everything in between. I have the pro plan and it’s been an amazing tool. I do, however, have some suggestions.

First, i think a more advanced queue system would be such a great help. I kind of don’t like how when I play a song, that instance of play is shared across the song’s multiple locations. For example, say I’m in the “all” tab and I play a song. That instance queues the whole of the all tab, but if I want to play the same song in a mixtape and have the rest of the mixtape come after, I have to close out the app and refresh it and play it in the mixtape or go into the mixtape, choose the song before it, and then hit next so it has the rest of the mixtape queued. Sorry if that’s convoluted, but in general a way to select the queue would be nice.

Second, sorting in mixtapes is a bit of a pain. There’s some options for sorting, but they’re timestamp, name, or date added dependent. It’s hard when I’m trying to figure out a tracklist for an EP or an album, I want to modify the sequence but I have to constantly rename tracks so it sorts in the way I want it. It’d just be helpful to have a drag queue feature.

Lastly, this may be a difficult ask but I’d love if this app could connect to my daw somehow so I could do quick bounces to listen on my phone to streamline the mixing process. That involves a lot lol but it’s definitely a feature worth thinking about.

Aside from that I have little else! Thank you for putting this app together it’s such a big help!

**Developer response:** Thanks so much for your review!

On your first point: I can definitely consider a queuing system; that’s actually a good idea. Here’s a small trick though:

If you play a tape, say in the all tapes list, and later you change your mind and want to play the same tape but within a mixtape, just tap on it to play inside the mixtape. It won’t interrupt playback (unlike in Spotify, for example, which restarts the song to signal to you that it accepted your command - easily discoverable but also super annoying when it restarts a song), but the playlist enqueued in the background will be the mixtape now, not the all tapes list.

On your second point: yes, agree. Custom sorting in mixtapes is coming.

And to your last point: you can get Tape It for Mac from the Mac App Store. Then you can just drag your bounces directly in there. One extra step after bouncing, but still quite a smooth workflow I think.

Hope that helps, and thanks again for your kind review!
Thomas

### 4/5 — Almost indispensable

*2026-03-29*

With some tweaks to latency, gated layering and track level control of those layers, this could absolutely change the game in terms of on the go songwriting and idea catching.

**Developer response:** Latency should only occur when you have Bluetooth headphones, and is unfortunately unavoidable when using Bluetooth. If you experience any other latency I’d love to hear about it! Track level control is on the todo list. I’m not quite sure what you mean with “gated layering”; I assume it’s layering over parts of the song instead of always starting at the beginning? If I understood that wrong please also let me know. You can always write me at thomas@tape.it

### 3/5 — Development Has Stagnated

*2026-03-04, version 4.2.2*

This was my favorite audio recording and playback app. I use it daily and listen to my recordings as continuous playback playlists and share them with band mates. Having used it for a couple years now, it seems like development has slowed to a halt. Haven’t seen any big fixes or new features in a while. Really hope the developer gets back in the groove. This was a winner.

### 5/5 — mac app

*2025-12-28*

please please do the mac app, so we can have the recordings on mac

**Developer response:** If you have an Apple Silicon Mac you can already get it on the Mac App Store :-). It’s basically just the iPhone app running on a Mac, so the experience is not quite where we’d like it to be, but we added drag & drop support among other things so you can just drag recordings to and from your DAW.

### 5/5 — Super

*2025-10-16*

### 5/5 — Minimalist wonder

*2025-09-28*

I rarely take time to review apps, but this is stunning. Genuinely has improved my musical output immensely, as such a big part of what held me back in my production was the fear of hitting record, but for some reason this app just invites you to commit to tape in a way that printing to a daw does not. Super handy for collecting foley whilst out and about and then reincorporating that into your projects. I use this with the teenage engineering opxy which allows you to record out directly over USB, I genuinely adore it. All I would add are some basic audio editing functions, eg to trim track length or normalise levels, but aside from that.. flawless for the dawless.

**Developer response:** Thanks so much for your review. We put a lot of effort into helping people stay focused on their music; really glad to hear it works so well for you. Trimming is actually already possible, and normalising is on the todo list.

### 5/5 — Toll

*2025-09-11*

**Developer response:** Freut mich, dass dir Tape It so gefällt. ~Thomas

### 4/5 — Enjoyable to use but a bit buggy

*2025-09-06*

I like using the app more than the default voice memos because it behaves consistently and doesn’t get funky with trying to use my airpods as a mic or quit recording in the middle of takes when I have them connected to another device

I have a couple issues with it though. The biggest one is a bug where scrolling through my past recordings is jittery as new entries load or disappear, moving themselves around on the page. I have a lot of recordings and this makes scrolling through and trying to find the one I want difficult.

My only suggestion other than fixing that bug would be to make the buttons a little more responsive. If I want to start new a recording shortly after ending one, I have to wait like half a second before the record button will register my tap.

Overall a great app

**Developer response:** Thanks for your review. We’re currently working on that scrolling bug; hopefully that’s fixed soon. It seems to be due to some changes in newer iOS versions.

Also thanks for the hint on the record button. That one is a bit harder to fix - we introduced the short required delay for accessibility reasons. It’s a long story, but the short version is that we needed to circumvent a bug in Apple’s Voice Over, the accessibility system that blind people use (we have quite a few blind users). I thought the current delay would be an acceptable compromise for everyone, but I’m going to look into it again to see if I can remove the delay without breaking Voice Over.

Best,
Thomas

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2025-09-05, version 4.1.3*

Glad I found this app fr 😮‍💨🔥

### 5/5 — Game-Changing

*2025-08-27*

Have just started using the app this week and it is a serious upgrade for vocalists. I've never had such good audio results from an iPhone and am a serial voice memo user for songwriting. Can't believe the quality. Excited to explore more settings but I'll keep coming back to it for its default settings alone. Thanks for making this, y'all!

**Developer response:** Thanks so much for writing, really glad to hear how much you like it!!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Intentionally inconvenient

*2026-07-27*

Decent enough app, but advertising a free service and then charging for the subscription to be able to search through your own recordings past 3 months is ridiculous and pretty scummy.

I honestly was considering the subscription as the app has a nicer interface than voice memos and the added features look cool, but I don’t really want to support or encourage creating inconveniences to sell something, it’s a very manipulative way to operate.

**Developer response:** I’m very sorry to hear that you feel this way. Let me explain the thinking behind it, so that hopefully you feel a little less angry about it.

Tape It is a free app with a paid pro tier. The free tier is pretty strong and contains most of the features, but ultimately it’s the paid version that pays for the development of the app. There are no ads, no associated hardware sales or other means of income. Tape It is simply an app, developed by me, as my fulltime job.

The free tier exists for casual users, so that more demanding users can try the app before buying, and that sharing recordings among friends doesn’t force any of your friends to buy it. It also ensures there’s no lock in - if you ever stop paying for the pro version, you can still access all your recordings, and all the effort you put into adding notes and organising them into mixtapes isn’t lost either.

The search in Tape It is a fairly powerful feature. You can search by instruments, for example, which Tape It automatically detects. It’s also a feature that you only need if you have tons of recordings, and at that point you’re probably a power user and should consider paying for the app. That’s why I decided to limit the search in the free version to recordings made in the last three months. Other popular apps like Slack have the same limitation, although Slack also hides messages that are older than three months. That I find evil, and I’d never do that in Tape It. All your recordings are yours, and you can always access them.

I’m completely aware that this is an artificial constraint. At the end of the day, I have to draw the line somewhere between the free and the pro version, and this is a line that I thought made sense. Other apps tend to limit cloud storage, for example, but I don’t do that - both free and pro users have unlimited cloud storage for backups and syncing in Tape It, so that you can always rest assured that your recordings are backed up in case you lose your phone, and never worry about whether something should be recorded or not.

I hope this explanation makes sense. I’m still happy to reconsider the search limitation, and will certainly take your comment into account as I rethink it.

Best,
Thomas

### 1/5 — horrible audio

*2026-02-08*

I just tried the app (WITH premium!) and the sound quality is abysmal, constantly clipping and lagging. also I can not use stereo recording. I have an iPhone 15 plus with latest OS. Such a shame! The app looked good and I would have loved to use it as a replacement for the old Apple Music Memos but it is literally unusable like this.

**Developer response:** Hi Dante,

That is really unusual, and the first time I’ve heard of this. Please mail me at thomas@tape.it (you can write in German as well). My strong suspicion is that there’s something wrong with the iPhone itself; if you have an Apple Store in your vicinity I recommend making a Genius Bar appointment there, they have a test they can run in the store that tests the microphones. But mail me in any case please.

### 1/5 — Scam wants a big subscription lol

*2026-01-13, version 4.2.0*

Makes you sign up with your email first and then tell tells you it’s a big subscription stay away from this app

### 1/5 — DOES NOT WORK

*2026-01-08, version 4.2.0*

DOES NOT WORK
So sick of taking hours to try to make something work

### 1/5 — Bad audio recorder

*2025-12-30, version 4.2.0*

this app cannot sign in with any other account except Apple some people might want to use Google login or even email login bad app

### 1/5 — Externes Interface funktioniert nicht.

*2025-10-22*

Schade, macht ansonsten guten Eindruck.

**Developer response:** Das klingt seltsam. Mail mir doch gerne an thomas@tape.it

### 1/5 — iPhone 16 does not work with USB

*2025-08-26, version 4.1.2*

Multiple audio interfaces work with voice recorder and garage band including Roland p-6 sampler. No incoming signal and sees stereo devices as mono.

### 1/5 — Useless app

*2025-08-24*

I was really excited to find this app because I had wanted for a long time to have an alternative to voice memos that actually is usable and isn’t slow. This app worked for me for a couple of months and then stopped working. It is better than voice memos at an initial glance just from a speed and smoothness standpoint but there are multiple crucial problems which arise very shortly after using the app over time that prove that it is actually worse than voice memos. 1. The search function is unusable unless you pay a fee (the search function? Really?). 2. I can’t even scroll to find past recordings because the feature is broken and jumps around on my screen. 3. You have to pay to use stereo recording in the app. Voice memos can already do that for free.

So bottom line is unless you pay them a subscription the app becomes quite useless after a couple months and to be quite frank is worse than voice memos so I highly recommend finding a different alternative. Unless you have the funds to be able to just have subscriptions laying around and even then make sure you make every recording give that’s the case because the scroll feature is broken (at least for me it is).

### 1/5 — Also cannot make account

*2025-05-06, version 3.21.0*

Made and account and it will not go past that screen. Saw another view of same issue and I am not under 13. My theory is when you choose hide your email this occurs? It’s definitely something tho. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no luck. Thanks

### 1/5 — Its not signing in

*2025-05-01*

Iam a iPhone 13 user and the app is not logging in and there is no any other option to login and test this app

**Developer response:** Can you shoot me a mail at thomas@tape.it? This certainly shouldn’t be the case, and if you mail me we can figure it out together.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Wow great for singers

*2026-08-19*

Wow I’ve been looking for an easy and good quality to record myself singing when I’m out and I feel inspired.
I got it because it has a layer function. My only question… Is there a way to edit a layer afterwards? I would like to be able to see all the layers and edit / clip pieces out that I don’t like. I’m big into harmonizing so I would love to be able to build lots of layers. Thanks!

**Developer response:** Thanks so much for your feedback. Editing layers is currently not possible, but I’m already working on it.

### 5/5 — So good

*2026-06-17, version 4.2.7*

Love tape it. Wish it had video support options.

### 5/5 — LOVE, only one thing missing

*2026-04-30, version 4.2.4*

I truly love this app so much, it has become my go-to voice recording app. The ONLY thing that’s missing is built-in transcription. Apple has added this in the past couple years, and I feel like it would be immensely helpful. Even just a basic version to start would be great!

### 5/5 — Fab audio app

*2026-04-23*

This app does everything I want, without adding unnecessary frills. Great recording quality, even on tricky percussive instruments like a piano where most apps struggle. I love the button on the lock screen, so I can instantly start recording without having to find the app, open it, press the button etc. Sharing is easy as well, and the interface is clean and uncluttered. Worth every penny for a keen musician.

### 5/5 — great app! wish it had a native mac app too

*2026-04-19*

useful to have the voice memo running off the computer in a sesh!!

**Developer response:** Thanks so much. You can get the Mac app from the Mac App Store!

### 5/5 — Perfect

*2026-04-07, version 4.2.2*

Ideal for song ideas

### 5/5 — Brilliant

*2026-03-03, version 4.2.2*

Haven’t bought the full version yet, but for what you get, I like more than the apple notes app. And the creator welcomes feature requests.

### 5/5 — So Useful

*2026-02-25*

I have really come to love this application. I previously had all music ideas on the Voice Memos app, but they would get archived there and not really touched again. With this app, I love several of the features like being able set markers, add to multiple mix tapes, layering, and the text and image data I can associate with the recording. This is helping me to catalog so many musical ideas from many devices. I have some enhancement suggestions, but will email those to the address in the app. Keep up the great work on the app!!

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for the lovely review. Really glad you like it.

### 5/5 — Love it.

*2026-01-19, version 4.2.0*

Elegant and highly usable UI. Plays really well with external mics, makes the built in mics sound better, easy editing, reliable iCloud sync…what’s not to love?

### 5/5 — Ein MUSS für alle MUSIKER*innen

*2026-01-02*

~Thomas
