Very simple and easy to use. No CPA necessary! I hate the uncertainty of how much to withhold and wondering if I’m going to owe at the end of the year. Once you enter some basic info this app shows how much federal and state tax you should be prepared to pay. No more guessing. So helpful! I’m a Independent Contractor, I’m trying to figure out what I need to pay the IRS quarterly. I need to put money aside. **Developer response:** You are considered self-employed. Taxes Suck calculates Self-Employment tax (i.e., SS & Medicare); It’s added to Federal Tax. If you are self-employed, you pay federal income tax & self-employment tax with your federal estimated taxes. It all goes together, and Taxes Suck calculates it. I use Taxes Suck every month for my wife’s photography business, and it calculates 100% correctly. Tap on “See Details” for a breakdown. Yes, you should pay estimates quarterly. Taxes Suck is excellent for estimating what you currently owe. Input your Net Income in the self-employment section and use the “Tax Withholding” section to put what you have paid in estimates for the year. This should give you what you currently owe in federal & state. This will include your self-employment taxes (i.e., SS & Medicare). Thanks for using Taxes Suck. I appreciate it! ### 1/5 — App might be good BUT… *2023-05-29* App is available to Canada but it’s meant for the US only. No way to select a province or something other than US states. Maybe it’s good for US but that I don’t know. **Developer response:** I am so sorry you felt misled. I put “USA” in the title so it’s clear it’s a United States tax calculator. I will be sure to update the description & screenshots to make it more straightforward it’s USA only. I want the app available worldwide in the event a USA citizen is out of the country earning an income and they want to estimate their tax bill for the USA because, in general, if you’re considered a USA citizen or USA permanent resident, you pay USA income tax regardless of where income is earned. So, if a USA citizen is living in a different country earning an income, it is usually subject to USA income tax. Since you are from Canada, it might be worth checking out “Simple Tax Calculator.” It’s a Canadian income tax calculator. I have never tested it to the Canadian tax code, I just know the app exists, and it’s simple to use. I would recommend backtesting it to a previous tax year before trusting it. Thanks for your feedback & I hope this helps 🙏 ### 3/5 — Non-refundable credits not being applied to Other Taxes!! *2026-05-28* Non-refundable credits such as the child tax credit are only being applied to the regular income tax BEFORE Other Taxes, such as excess APTC repayment, are added. This is incorrect for Form 1040. This results in a portion of the non-refundable credit being wasted/lost if the credit doesn’t fully offset the regular tax, resulting in taxes owed due to the Other Taxes which should have been offset by the remainder of the non-refundable credits after all taxes are added. **Developer response:** I’ll have to look into this. This situation has not affected me. At least yet :). I’ll try my best to get to it asap. Thank you for the 4-star review 🤩 ### 4/5 — Okay, if you don’t itemize. Tax caster better. *2025-03-24* Okay, if you don’t itemize. Tax caster better **Developer response:** Tax Caster & Taxes Suck are two fundamentally different applications. “Taxes Suck” helps you estimate & project your “current” year Federal & State income tax so you do not have a substantial outstanding tax bill and possibly be subject to penalties & interest. “Tax Caster” is used to estimate your federal tax refund from a “prior” year. It only shows you after the fact, won’t help estimate current taxes, and is only federal, Not State. I do apologize there is no way to input itemized deductions. To keep Taxes Suck as simple as possible, I have chosen not to implement it. Only about 10% of taxpayers itemize, and I assume most that itemize are using a CPA to calculate & project their income taxes anyway. If you are among the 10% of people who can itemize, you can input in “Other Deductions” the amount of your itemized deductions above the standard deduction. This will be limited in functionality and won’t account for any phaseouts, etc. Also, keep in mind that Taxes Suck will lower state income by the amount input in “Other Deductions.” You may need to adjust state income by inputting the difference in state “Additions.” I hope this helps! ### 4/5 — Great app for a QUICK Fed & State Tax estimate! *2023-08-28* At last, a simple FREE application for estimating both your Federal and State taxes without having to through hoops to input the most basic information. Very handy and will use every year! You can get an estimate in less than 30 seconds and no need to create online accounts like so many others ask you to! A must try! Suggestion for a future release would be the ability to populate and save multiple estimates (or export the current estimate) for easier comparison of different tax scenarios. I will look into adding these features. ### 5/5 — Useful, confusing estimates part *2025-03-24* I found this app very useful to get a quick overview of my tax situation, it’s easy to use and includes helpful tips. The one aspect I found confusing is the field “Projected Federal Tax Withholding” - I had expected that exactly this field is the output of the analysis: where am I projected to land and is this sufficient, based on my income details, tax status, and perhaps ability to enter additional withholding per paycheck. I’ve done the math myself, but would find it more intuitive if it calculated it for me. **Developer response:** Thank you for the kind words 🙏.
