### 2/5 — Review TBC

*2022-04-09, version 4.11.4*

First, I would like a seamless transition from, “your subscription has expired” to “renew now”. I shouldn’t need a password that I can’t replace if forgotten to give you my money.
Some articles, I skip altogether just because of the headline knowing the liberal slant.
The sports just keeps getting smaller until it disappears and so will I.
Thank you, John Nash

### 2/5 — Always having login problems

*2022-01-02, version 4.11.4*

Almost every time I try to login, I can’t I’m about ready to cancel.

### 2/5 — TBC Review

*2020-09-05, version 4.11.4*

The paper is full of pictures and stories from other cities. Plenty
of stories happen in Bakersfield’s 400,000 people. We would rather see these highlighted.....

### 2/5 — Search

*2020-03-17, version 4.11.4*

This ap used to be great. They took out the search feature which I used a lot! The navigation also seems a little off compared to last one. I’m not sure if it’s because the newspaper was sold and new owner uses a different IT. Just not the same. I actually emailed someone at the newspaper. This person couldn’t understand that search feature doesn’t work in app as they kept directing me to a browser and the search feature is there. And they were using internet explorer as their browser!! Too funny.

### 3/5 — Nothing but irritating

*2019-06-02, version 3.0.0*

Piss poor,,,keeps shutting down,,,have tried to use this for past several months,,,subscription going bye bye come Monday.

### 2/5 — New software update not an improvement

*2018-08-24, version 3.0.0*

I much prefer the previous software for the E-edition. It was easier to navigate and didn’t have back/forward buttons obscuring text. Why the change?

### 2/5 — Update is terrible.

*2018-08-20, version 3.0.0*

Why are you adding an iOS advertisement on top of the advertisements in the paper. We are subscribing with our money and we should not have these ads.

### 2/5 — Oops. Some bugs...

*2017-07-20, version 2.8.0*

There are a bunch of bugs in this version of the app. Often today's paper does not load - you just get yesterday's paper, even though the Californian has sent an email advising that the paper is "out" and ready to read. I had to sign in four times to the paper this morning, which is really frustrating when it comes up in the middle of trying to read an article. Also, many of the pages failed to load.

### 3/5 — A Step Backwards

*2016-11-20, version 2.6.2*

Can no longer swipe between different day editions. You get the wrong day and cannot get out of it.

### 1/5 — Repeated downloads

*2014-03-06, version 2.6.2*

I too have had the app stop picking the latest edition for no reason. I end up having to delete it and download it again. And I've also had it ask me to sign in again for no reason. Unreliable but the only game in town.

### 1/5 — Unreliable

*2014-01-09, version 2.6.2*

Very frustrating. Sometimes asked to log in - sometimes not. Most recent gripe is the current edition is not available. Only archived issues an option.

### 1/5 — Sign in???

*2013-10-26, version 2.6.2*

Useless app!

### 4/5 — Can't log on

*2013-07-02, version 2.6.2*

I have been unable to log on to this. I tried reaching out to TBC customer service, but have yet to hear back from them.

### 1/5 — Poorly working app

*2013-02-04, version 2.3.2*

This app does not refresh to a new day if the paper is left open to any page other than the last page. Often the larger papers do not load until later in the day. You do not get the ads provided with Sunday or holiday papers. Think the service is more unreliable than the door to door option.

### 1/5 — Not good

*2013-01-15, version 2.3.2*

Doesn't load. Enough said

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Review

*2022-03-05, version 4.11.4*

Can’t get any longer no help

### 1/5 — App not working on my iPad

*2022-03-04, version 4.11.4*

New newspapers are not showing since Wednesday…some kind of technical issue…frustrating

### 1/5 — Communication

*2021-07-09, version 4.11.4*

About 3 years ago I subscribed to the Californian online. The employees at the old building downtown helped me get set up
Online . They were very helpful and kind to an elderly lady like me.
Overtime there was some mix-up and then there was no one in that building that was helping people with their online problems.
My son tried to help me get back on, but to no avail.
So, we were unable to reach anyone who could help me .
I give this paper an F plus in dealing with being able to contact you
to solve problems dealing with customers.
Ironic that you are in the business of communication!

Thanks for letting me air this. Hope it gets to someone.

### 1/5 — Inability To Send Articles To Our Children

*2020-04-21, version 4.11.4*

We used to be able to share Californian articles with our children. However, we are now unable to do that electronically. As we could clip the article out of the paper version we still receive (specifically so we can clip articles), it doesn’t make sense that we can’t email or text articles to them. Fix this (and get rid of that stupid new comic that replaced retail - how about Family Circus or even Drabble?), and you will rise to five stars in our estimation.

### 1/5 — New app is not user friendly

*2020-01-26, version 4.11.4*

Old app much better

### 1/5 — Very clunky

*2020-01-23, version 4.11.4*

Can’t view past issues. Can’t zoom in and view one full article at a time. Now have to go back and forth to read stories on different pages. Very inconvenient. Wish the old version was available

### 1/5 — New electronic edition

*2020-01-23, version 4.11.4*

The new electronic edition is awful because I cannot adjust the size. I really hate the way the paper seems to float.

### 1/5 — Not For iPhone

*2018-10-05, version 3.0.0*

This app is horrible on the iPhone. It glitches and will not scroll. The page turn buttons cover the text so that it cannot be read.

### 1/5 — Can't go through different day/editions

*2016-10-13, version 2.6.2*

App no longer allows you to scroll through the different days/editions. If you go back to a previous edition you can't go to a newer edition without uninstalling the app. Please fix!!

### 1/5 — Can't swipe through editions.

*2016-10-10, version 2.6.2*

Have had no problems at all until lately when I can't swipe through the editions. If I look back at a previous edition, then I'm not able to swipe forward to the current one. It just seems to lock all the visible editions in place. To correct this, I have to delete the app and reinstall it. Very irritating ! Grrrrrrr.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great paper

*2022-04-18, version 4.11.4*

Great paper !

### 5/5 — App

*2020-06-21, version 4.11.4*

The app for this newspaper is too large.

### 5/5 — Bad App

*2020-04-18, version 4.11.4*

I got this update 3 days ago, and I’m really disappointed in it. I’m trying to use it on my iPad, as I’ve been doing for years. First, there is nothing showing how to get into the paper. I finally figured it out but today it won’t let me access the newspaper. This is extremely frustrating! Is there any way I can go back to the former app? It was so much easier to use.

### 5/5 — Works great!

*2014-12-12, version 2.6.2*

Great app for reading the Californian. But wondering, why doesn't the app use the iOS Newstand like other newspapers do?

### 5/5 — Awesome reading experience

*2013-12-06, version 2.6.2*

This app is for the replica edition of the daily newspaper. The tab version looks great on a tablet, and offers access to previous editions of the paper. I find it particularly effective when I'm on the road. Helps me keep up on news in my hometown until I get back.

### 5/5 — E-Edition not always available

*2012-11-17, version 2.3.2*

Have not been very happy this err, with the e-edition. It will not download sometimes until I try for about 1/2hour and today it is not working at all. Used to be right on time. Now it's difficult to get to or read and on the weekends there is no one to help after 10:30 am. Very frustration when I want to read my paper

### 5/5 — Love it!

*2012-05-12, version 2.3.2*

I love reading the paper every morning in my iPad.

### 5/5 — E-edition

*2011-07-12, version 2.2*

This is a great upgrade from the original e-edition and I give it the full five stars. I would love to see three enhancements down the road that would make it a ten star app.

First a button to change from the landscape to the portrait views and hold it there. Secondly, an ability to share comments on particular stories and finally the ability to post letters to the editor (not for public viewing) as a direct link to that section. It would also be great if we could make links to particular stories on social networking sites. it would also be great if those of us who subscribe only have to log in once to read our morning paper per subscription... Oh, my wife says she needs a way to print coupons too.

Thanks for hitting one out of the park with this initial offering...

### 5/5 — Don't change anything!!!

*2011-06-30, version 2.2*

I don't even live there yet and I love this app!

### 5/5 — Awesome app to stay in the know on Bakersfield happenings

*2011-06-11, version 2.2*

Nothing beats being able to read the paper through the comfort of the iPad. Takes about a minute to load complete paper but the UI is super friendly and I like that it allows you to zoom. I also like that the app downloads the way the paper looks like. Will use it regularly!
