I couldn’t have asked for more. I highly recommend the app, it’s the best calculator I’ve found, especially for keeping open while taking notes, or doing homework on your iPad. ### 5/5 — Feature Suggestion *2024-09-29* Could we please get the option to colour the background of the calculator buttons? It’s also very powerful, featuring plotting, solving and conversion, all in a clean and uncluttered way. This is a calculator app with a lot of attention to detail. Obrigado. **Developer response:** Thank you! 🤩 ### 5/5 — in case you do indeed need a calculator on a regular basis, don't look any further! *2023-09-24* Why choose this calculator over any other in AppStore: (1) It is most versatile, while not trying to emulate a classical hardware calculator (like «15C Scientific Calculator», probably the best application of this kind in AppStore), nor offering useless frills for those in permanent need of entertainment. In short, it is for those who do indeed need …well, a calculator, without the illusion of holding one in ones' hands. (2) The developer does not harvest nor sells any of your data. In the meantime this respectful attitude towards one's users has become quite rare. I am very thankful for this. (3) The developer offers his application for free, and leaves it to each user's sense of decency to put some money into the «tip jar», or not. –––– 2 years later: (a) I continue to like this well designed app, but Jacob Parker (the developer) does now collect «Diagnostics». How much this is linkable to an identity is everybody's guess. (b) there is no way to leave a second tip for Jacob. This is, of course, a AppStore decision, to discourage developers strenghten their relations with their users. I have no reason to assume that Apple allows oversights, neglects glitches. (c) the size of the TechniCalc window cannot be changed! This is really strange, but I have seen this also before, mainly in applications developed in Germany. It is beyond me, why some developers, like Jacob, go out of their way to disable resizing windows, which is something so basic to expect. ––– Maybe I should clarify point (c) above: I expect to be able to resize the TechniCalc Calculator like any other macOS window, by dragging-and-dropping a any of the four corners of its unique window. I hope this clarification helps. (d) I resent not being able to just e-mail the developer Jacob Parker, and I am obiged to join some social medium to communicate with him. What is wrong with just e-mailing? **Developer response:** Thank you! 🤩 For the 2 years later update - I do now collect crash logs and crash logs only. They’ve really helped! No personal data is included, you can email me and I can share some logs if you’re interested - I’ve got nothing to hide! I’ll look into why you’re restricted to tipping once. I had no idea! And on macOS you can resize the window between the compact and large size - just like the built in calculator. Hope this helps! ### 5/5 — Superb *2023-02-21* I’ve been using this app for well over a year as a daily driver and I don’t have a single bad thing to say about it! The natural language layout mirrors the best scientific calculators on the market, but with the flexibility of a smartphone the functionality is vastly superior. The communication between myself and the developer during beta testing is top-notch with fast turnaround for bug squashing as well as helping to implement UI improvements & new features! This absolutely replaced algeo (and is better in many ways), and it deserves to be noticed. From what I can see, the developer is highly active and responsive, and moreover he pledged to not require a subscription plan. There is no other choice: I’ve tried dozens of calculator apps in iOS and they all come up short, between ugly expression formatting, forests of parentheses to denote simple expressions, or lack of specialized functionality like linear algebra or complex arithmetic. To the dev: you deserve my money, but you also deserve my gratitude. Calculators are so central to so many professions, and having an excellent calculator app available is irreplaceable. If you’re wondering why apple doesn’t have a default iPad calculator app, it’s because they must be waiting to acquire this one. ### 5/5 — Amazing! *2022-05-08* So far the best calculator I've used. Really simple but allows for complex calculation and lots of flexibility. Intuitive to use and it looks good. I like the reference area. I’ve been using it exclusively for almost two years as an engineering student without any issues, in fact I’ve had multiple people ask what app it is as it looks so polished and “built in”. Features like matrix operations and the equation editors are a godsend, and very intuitive to use after just a couple minutes. One feature I would love to see added is a way to export operations as latex, would make working on reports just that much easier :) . Overall a complete 10/10. Seriously cannot recommend this enough. It’s stellar and completely worth the money. **Developer response:** ❤️ ### 5/5 — Quality Calculator App *2021-10-21* A vast improvement over the baseline apple calculator, especially on iPad. The interface is understandable and pleasant, and I can imput complex multi-operation calculations without worrying if I messed up order of operations, like on the apple standard calc. My only two complaints are 1) The unit converter is time consuming to change units, especially when it's often the same few conversions. It would be nice to have a 'Favorites' menu to save conversions. 2) It'd be useful to have a widget of the app so I can access it without constantly opening the app. Regardless of the two things, this is still the best calculator app I have used. **Developer response:** Thanks for the review! It really helps out. For quick access, head on over to settings and enable ‘always available’. Then use ctrl + option + / to open the app. I’ll take a look at speeding unit conversion up. If you have any more ideas, you can always email me through the link in the app! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 2/5 — I want to love this, but it’s unusable. *2025-11-13* I made a bit on an impulse decision in buying this calculator - it seemed to be an excellent upgrade from the aging desmos scientific app & the just horrible apple calculator. The features of this app are great, but the interface is scaled terribly. It reacts extremely poorly to being resized, and is completely unusable when not in full screen. 95% of my workflow with a calculator is either in slide over or split screen / windowed mode with another app, and when I try this with TechniCalc, the working space gets squished to the top while the keypad becomes enormous. I also thought the custom keypad layout would solve this, but it just replaces blank spaces with a weird series of dots in the tile. The side bar is massive, the keypad is massive, but the actual calculations themselves are squished against the top of the window. If you’re using matrices, they literally overlap on themselves. If this gets fixed down the line I could love this app and give it another try, but this is so terrible I can’t imagine it has been tested properly on iPad. **Developer response:** If you reach out to me in email with some screenshots of the issues you’re having, I’d love to try and address them. You can use the ‘contact developer’ link in the bottom section of the sidebar, or the menu on iOS ### 3/5 — It’s nice … when I can find it *2024-11-29* The app is nice enough but it’s not findable on MacOS. So it’s running on my computer but I can’t see it. I also can’t force quit it, so essentially the only thing to do is to restart the computer, which isn’t happening. I’m sure it’s a simple bug and look forward to the developer fixing it because it makes the app unusable most of the time. **Developer response:** I don’t quite have enough information from you to fix this right now. I’ll be happy to get some more information from you and work on a fix! ### 3/5 — Recent Update Slows Calculations *2024-04-30, version 1.25.1* I believe ever since the currency update, this calculator is losing its value to me. I’ll type in a simple 16,000/12 and the display shows that it’s “thinking…” and then loads for longer after that. Division is not complex, so I don’t understand what the issue is. I’m hoping this can be worked out because I use this calculator app for everything even through my undergraduate studies. If this continues, it will severely hinder my calculations and I’ll need to find another app. ### 3/5 — No real instruction manual *2023-12-14* This could be a good app but you are left guessing how to use some of it’s capabilities. The reference section incomplete. It’s bad because some exercises will ask you to have 3X2 matrices as an example. It more than lives up to its name for complicated or technical computations, while remaining quick and easy for basic calculations, so there's never any reason to use anything else! Input is simple, both input and output are formatted beautifully, and the result updates as you type.
