I've been mdecks musical materials user for years now. I find Tessitura Pro resourceable. But Its lack of developers support (several months now) have discouraged me as a frequent user of this creative "circle of fifth app". I can't explain why in my Ipad Pro, the interface shows a second circle. It is anoying and unbearable (from both aesthetically and mathematically points of view). Or COULD be useful were it not so difficult to use. I am extremely well versed in musical terminology so that’s not the problem. The problem is the interface. It makes absolutely no sense how you get from one page to another. You have to actually study the app in order to study the music. Not worth it to me. ### 3/5 — Not a great practice resource *2018-09-01, version 3.9.1* This is easily a brilliant app for a music theory nerd (myself included), but it lacks a lot of practice functionality. There is also a bug involving “practicing” across all keys and modes, which will only change the key, not the mode. If this bug were fixed and a list of scales which could all be practiced in the same screen, I would not hesitate to give 5 stars, but as it stands, the app doesn’t warrant it in my eyes. ### 2/5 — Great knowledge Terrible interface *2018-08-09* There’s an ungodly amount of great information in this app, but with such a terrible interface, no learning tools, or introductory information to help understanding exactly what you’re looking at, the app can’t be said to be worth the price. Would be nice to hear the scale...source patterns against the chord or subs. At this stage I don’t see the benefit of having an app for things that should probably just be learned in your head. Absolutely watch the tutorial videos. ### 4/5 — Interesting and useful, some room for improvement. *2018-04-25, version 3.9.1* It is indeed an interesting model for exploring scales and modes. I would recommend it to anyone interested. An iPad on a music stand with tools like this is really helping me start to piece together my heretofore fragmented knowledge of tonal music. I’d like to see some custom descriptions in the info pane. For example in the case of harmonic minor, it could describe its character and relationship to natural minor, rather than just filling in the numbers in a default sentence about number of modes/transpositions (of course, it could still revert to the current form as default in cases without specific overrides). It would also seem helpful to allow tapping to play notes on the key/fretboard, and perhaps the staff as well. Might run the risk of being fiddly on smaller models, but on the 12.9” iPad it should work pretty well without requiring any changes to the layout. The interface can still occasionally be a bit unintuitive. I think I’m fairly used to it now, and I don’t know what it was like before, but having brought one of the mDecks bundles, I’m afraid the UX & UI is generally not as great as it could be. I’ve had more problems with Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro, perhaps I’ll get ‘round to reviewing that as well. The graphics could do with a bit more polish; not a big deal, but things like notes on the staff look a bit blocky... seems like a quick pass by a dedicated designer might not go amiss. I’m not a big fan of the general colour scheme or typography, but that’s pretty subjective and also not really important. ### 3/5 — Could be so much better *2018-03-10* This app has a lot of potential but in my opinion there are a couple things that make this mostly something that I won't use very much. First, when choosing a scale as a main structure it does not show you all the triads available. You first have to choose what type of triad you are searching for, then it will show you only that triad. It seems like a miss to not see all the minor and major triads listed without going to the browser. Second thing is melodic patterns. There is no option to force chord tones on beat 1, or beats 1&3, etc. this makes patterns sound ambiguous instead of outlining a chord. ### 2/5 — Hmm.... *2017-10-16, version 3.8.3* Complex interface with loads of buttons and pages. Hardly labelled so it feels like a lifetime's study to get the basics. You depend on a load of YouTube video tutorials. In the end my question is - what are you supposed to do with it? As an analytical tool you can get a list of Chords and other structures in a scale. Seems like a small reward for the amount of time you have to put in. Is it a practice tool? Not really. I play a scale more than once! It's based on a one octave scale only and you can't get it to play more than once. Goes for guitar tab and standard notation. ### 2/5 — Has potential *2017-09-23* The app provides lots of content, just the interface is clumsy and not intuitive. It feels like a chore to use. For example.. first glance at the guitar neck view and you get the idea. An needed improvement... if the user could customize a workspace ..or create several to guide the scope of what you they want tot work on. For example. Show a scale mode in whatever key and the chord triads that go with it.. ### 4/5 — Impressive! *2017-08-24* The interface is not very intuitive, but once I watched the tutorial videos, I could finally start to see the tremendous potential this app has as a practice tool. Seems strange that you can only set the screen orientation when you first open the app - it would be nice to be able to switch between portrait/landscape while it is open. As a jazz trombone player, I also wish the range for bass clef practice patterns could go up higher than a G4. I would typically practice patterns up to F5 or so. Other than that, it's fantastic. An extrememly useful resource for anybody studying music theory or composition as well as an excellent practice tool. ### 4/5 — Jazz Improviser's Playground *2017-07-23, version 3.8.3* The world of scales and modes may look like a jungle to a Jazz improvising beginner: intimidating, hard to navigate, and frustrating to the point where it may cause one to give up. This application has converted that jazzy jungle into a playground, with near limitless opportunities for the aspiring jazz musician. It includes all possible modes and chords per scale/pattern that you may be analyzing in the app, and gives you information about what modes/scales/triads sound best over what chords. The app gives exactly what it advertises, and I would recommend this to a music educator to pass down to his students in a heartbeat. The only reason I give it a 4 star rating out of 5 is due to the apps formatting. It appears to be on the right track to achieving a simplistic navigational system that is also aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but there are still a few things that need to be adjusted to make this a 5 star music educational tool. (Note: they do have their own tutorial video channel on youtube on how to navigate the app, but if it can get to a point where it is more simplistic and eye appealing without sacrificing functionality and user freedom, it will be a music education super tool.) I also noticed that diminished chords have errors. Makes me believe the writers of this program are not educated in music theory or did not have the coding tools to do it right. The text is the wrong size and messes up the display. You don’t have to be a jazz cat. You can be a stoner doom metal head and come away with tons more knowledge and love of music and how it all mysteriously works. These apps all invite creative exploration, which can lead to wonders. Do yourself a favor and buy this app, and Total Harmony Pro, now. The best musical experience education out there. Watch the tutorials *2017-07-19* This is an extensive app, great for theory and practice. Watch the tutorials and demos to see all the that it does. Simply endless and brilliant. The simple yet effective graphing of the scales and how you get all the related modes by just rotating the graph around the circle is brilliant. I've been looking for an app like this for a long time. If you want to understand and practice scales this is the app. I can practice any scale in any mode, even scales I did not know existed. The circle of fifths with the scales in it is awesome. And the patterns are really useful. The fact that this app does not have thousands of reviews, puzzles me. I guess people just want to play games on their phones It is among the best apps for scales and modes I've seen. **Developer response:** Thanks.
