## What is TestCard ProHD 4k?

Professionals use test cards to calibrate broadcast systems and cinemas use them too, so why shouldn’t home cinemas or theatres use them too? TestCard ProHD is the innovative means to calibrating your screen to ensure a consistent and correct representation of display media. (In-App purchase required after ensuring this will work on your TV / Display.)

** In-App purchase required after compatibility testing for full functionality. See below for why. **

Additionally, TestCard ProHD also now includes an SPL or “decibel” meter to assist with setting up surround sound sources. It’s a solution for calibrating both audio and visual elements within the home that can also be used in professional environments.

Newest version now includes a Audio Visual Synchronisation test to help diagnose lip-sync issues.

TestCard ProHD is the application for setting up a modern High Definition TV or projector. We’ve grouped together some common types of test cards as well as some new ones that will help set up home theaters to a professional standard.

Adjusting the contrast and brightness is essential to ensuring that you get the best from your TV or projector, but color is vitally important too. Further, test cards for motion and sharpness tweak more performance from your screen. Using these test cards and their instructions you’ll be able to tweak to get the best you can without the expensive of a dedicated calibration service.

Only by applying test cards in a controlled manner will you to get the best from your home theater and TestCard ProHD is the right tool, taking advantage of the unique abilities of the iPhone and iPad.

Within modern screens there are many techniques used to smooth motion. These can also have a detrimental effect, yet correctly set some do improve the picture. Having a repeating pattern to assist the setting of motion controls is essential. TestCard ProHD has test cards specifically design for motion testing on a screen.

Further, each test card has an information section to give you concise information and instruction on how to use it. The more that can be gained form each test card, the more information is provided. For ease of use the instruction are displayed on the iPhone / iPad while simultaneously displaying the test card on the external display.

Access to the test cards on the external display, Virtual Blue Filter and the SPL meter are only available after an In-App purchase. Using the default test screen please ensure that you have tested your device with the media adaptor, or Apple TV, on the external display before purchasing access. This is to allow you to verify that your system is fully compatible before purchase, and to share a single purchase with your iOS devices and Apple TV.

TestCard ProHD can be used with Apple TV V2, V3, V4 or V5 / 4k, or with the Apple media interfaces for HDMI or VGA.

Apple TV V2 and V3 can be used as the external display interface using AirPlay Mirroring. Simply switch on AirPlay on the iPhone or iPad and select Mirroring. See below for instructions on AirPlay Mirroring.

For HDMI or VGA Apple produces two types of media interface. While we’ve included some test cards for VGA / computer calibration, the home cinema user who is looking for 1080p compatibility should opt for the HDMI based media interface.

Apple TV version of the app is also available. Once access to the testcards is bought on either iOS or Apple TV app, you can have access on the other type of device without additional purchase. The In-App-Purchase is shared between all compatible devices registered on your Apple ID.

Apple TV AirPlay Instructions:
To enable AirPlay Mirroring connect your iOS device and your Apple TV to the same Wi-Fi network. For iOS 7 swipe up from the bottom of your screen to access Control Center. Tap on the AirPlay icon, select your Apple TV and switch on Mirroring. More details can be found on Apple’s support page http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5209

### 1/5 — Can’t use the test cards after payment

*2023-02-12*

Even after I pay for it and I connected my phone to my tv the test cards don’t display on my tv and when I try to use the blue filter it acts like I haven’t paid for it I tried resetting the app but I can’t rebuy the test cards do y’all know how to fix this

### 5/5 — Bargain

*2022-05-15*

$4.99 gives you a complete selection of video test cards as well as sound adjustments.

**Developer response:** Thank you! We're not allowed to state the price in the app as that's controlled by Apple and their App Store, but we do keep the price low. For a small developer as we are we can't give it away for free, but do want to be as fair as possible (we love our A/V too!). Hence why we opted for test before you buy. And then shared that in-app purchase with Apple TV so that all users can run on both iOS and Apple TV versions with one purchase.

### 5/5 — Works great.

*2021-11-07, version 1.71*

Used this on my TV and the picture is much better now. Colours and picture not glaring but more like a cinema. Haven’t used the audio tests as I don't have surround sound but nice to know I can use them later.

### 1/5 — Rip off

*2021-01-30, version 1.65*

Paid £4.99 for patterns and they don’t work I want my money back

### 5/5 — Great App for the price

*2020-12-04*

I don’t understand comments giving only 1 star. The app is only 5 dollars and similar calibration tool are usually more expensive.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your review! We've added even more tools to the original app over the years to offer more, and everybody has aways been able to get those upgrade for free too. My goal was to offer some of the best tools you could get, but also ones that keep being added to over time too. I don't think anybody else has ever done this before.

### 1/5 — Portrait only; hasn’t even been proofread or even spell-checked

*2020-09-28*

The description refers to non-existent “Apple TV V2”, “V3”, “V4”, and “V5”; this forces the use to figure out, with possible error, what real products these made-up names refer to.

The app itself riddled with typos, misspellings, and other errors and apparently hasn’t been proofread even once.

On top of all that, the developer thinks it’s OK to require the user to (detach their iPad from its Smart Keyboard or rearrange its cover and) pick their iPad up from its landscape mounted position and hold it vertically for this app that has no reason not to support landscape. This app is specifically for use with an Apple TV, so the most natural position of an iPad is likely on a table, in landscape orientation, in front of the user facing a large display. Dictating orientation is rude enough, but dictating portrait for this particular app is worse.

**Developer response:** The app was written initially for the iPhone and iOS, not Apple TV as that came much later. I did keep the same purchase model so that if you had bought iOS you could run on Apple TV, but Apple TV only started allowing apps like this after V4. Yes, it is hard to keep track of different Apple TV versions, especially when V2 and V3 looked the same and with V4 and V5 differing only with the latter supporting 4k.

You may find some British spellings of some words as I'm UK based but I do try to follow US spellings where possible with this app. Many hours have been spent proof reading, but I'm not perfect and sometimes things do get through. You can email us any time if you're not sure about anything in particular.

It's not always easy to support both portrait and landscape modes. A lot of work goes in to getting the main screen work the way it should, and rotating that to landscape sometimes breaks what we've tried to do. What you're not seeing is the amount of layers and interface objects that are being laid up to present to you. My use-case is someone in their home-theatre sitting on their comfy sofa using their iPad to set up their TV. I tend not to imagine someone sitting at a desk to set up their home cinema.

I will look into landscape options, but this may take some time to do as it won't be easy. And as always you can email me and I do reply!

### 5/5 — Useful

*2020-08-20*

This is exactly what I needed to help me with an audio/video sync issue.

**Developer response:** Thank you! It's always great to hear my app has help someone get the most out of their home theatre!

### 1/5 — Ummm how much? OHHHH it’s $4.99!

*2020-03-08*

You guys do in fact realize that Apple TV users locating the app on the App Store via their Apple TV can NOT see what the app costs when they click “BUY”, right?

Someone, like myself, only just now, might do a random search for “4K or “Test” on Apple TV, locate this app, attempt to use it, find your in app purchase, attempt to see what it would cost to do so, only to see NO PRICE LISTED. They might then attempt to locate the app on their iPad.. which would be a fruitless venture as the app is not on iPadOS. Finally they might grab their iPhone and search there and FINALLY find that the app costs 4.99$ since iOS actually shows you the cost of in app purchases prior to making the purchase, where as Apple TV prompts a user to enter their password before proceeding. Perhaps the price is shown after that step before committing, but many, myself included are not likely to blindly take that chance until going through the steps I just outlined above.

So do us and yourselves all a favor, please. We understand you have to eat. Ya know, so do we. We get it. But be forthcoming about what you want for this service somewhere, ANYWHERE, in the description! On the landing page via Apple TV, in the info section upon using the app. Let ppl know what it’ll cost them. Is 4.99 fair? I think so. Will others? Who knows, that’s how this works. But you certainly have a much better shot at actually selling this useful app by disclosing its cost rather than chasing users away whom aren't willing to roll the dice during a blind Apple TV check out without entering their password first.

Think about it.

**Developer response:** App Store rules prevents me from stating the cost, as that is what Apple does for you. I can't code this in because the prices varies between regions. I want users of the iPhone/iPad version to have access to the Apple TV Version without making another purchase so I have to follow the same in-app purchase model. You're effectively getting far more access than if you just bought for Apple TV when you also have the ability to also access on iOS devices too. Personally, I think that's great! And unlike previous testcard systems on disc I've updated the app to include more features and more testcards without going back to the original purchasers for any additional fees. Again, I think that's a huge advantage. I'm trying to be as fair as I can, trying to give customers a lot of value for the purchase price, but I do have to work within the App Store rules and one rules is that Apple provides the costings for the app to users.

### 1/5 — Dreadful - Don’t waste your money

*2020-02-15, version 1.62*

Purchased for ATV and OLED TV - settings for brightness and contrast are way off - pure junk. The free stuff on YouTube gives better results.

### 1/5 — Too complicated

*2016-03-05*

There's a reason no one before me has reviewed this app. Because it's not very good. Should be streamlined more to be user friendly.

**Developer response:** We've tried to simplify the menus based upon your feedback, thank you!

One of the aims of the app was to offer a huge variety of different testcards that allow you to test your system with repeatable tests. Sometimes just one of those is exactly what you need for your system!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.76 — 2025-02-11

Update for the newer app receipt methods.

### 1.75 — 2024-11-14

Service update to keep app updated for the newer versions of iOS.

### 1.74 — 2023-01-21

Fixing bug that prevented transition from testcard list to the actual card. It has been traced to new code that was used to update from definitions that are being retired by Apple. Part of keeping the app fresh for new versions of iOS. We mishandled how the new types now need to be stored. Seemed to work on updated apps but not fresh installs.

A big thanks to the user who reported this as the app seemed to be working when on our phone and simulator.

### 1.73 — 2023-01-20

Bug fix for moving from testcard list to testcards. We think an old style on one of the user interfaces caused it to exit in some cases. If you still have this problem and can tell us more please email technical@js-technology.com to help us solve this. We're a small developer and can't buy every phone, sorry, but we do test different phones in the simulator. Thank you.

### 1.72 — 2023-01-12

Added new full colour screens at 50% and 100% brightness. These were requested by a customer.

General update for new iOS version. Keeping the app fresh.
