It’s been doing everything I need it to do. It also helps me keep things organized and easy to me to work between devices leveraging iCloud. Ever since the last big update on Sept 16, 2026, it now has major issues. I’m not going to run down the list, just one that is especially problematic. I’m trying to open a file, and it says it has to download from iCloud??? I’ve never seen that before. I used to be able to switch devices and all the files were instantly in sync. So now it’s download this file, for the past hour and there is no progress bar. I can’t use the app in this condition. I’m begging you to fix it. ### 3/5 — Two years to unblock a free version *2026-09-11, version 7.0.1* This App used to be free, then a subscription was enforced, locking non-subscribers out. Two years later the free part has been restored. I still have to see how much functionality there is. I’m in no hurry, I’ve moved on ### 2/5 — Price Deceptive *2026-07-15, version 6.4.1* Disappointing for a free app to require purchase to use even the most basic functions . It’s not a bad price probably but don’t expect to have to pay unless it is charged at download. ### 3/5 — No “X” button when I don’t want to pay *2026-05-12, version 6.4.0* I’m not paying 4.99 per month when I can have it for free at least let me exit the thing letting me pay I don’t care if I don’t want the “extra perks” LEMME WRITE ### 1/5 — Don’t bother downloading *2026-04-22* It’s a paid app with a limited 3 day trial with no uptick or bypass. **Developer response:** We’re sorry the three-day trial was the only way to get past the opening screen. In version 7.0.0, we removed the mandatory subscription screen. You can now use the free plan without starting a trial or subscribing. Please update to the latest version if you’d like to try it again. ### 1/5 — Accès *2026-04-20, version 6.3.0* Proposition d'acheter le prime qui bloque toute l'appli impossible d'y avoir accès... ### 1/5 — Forces you to buy! *2026-04-19* Forces you to buy a monthly subscription just to use it. Honestly it’s not worth it. I uninstalled it after 2 minutes trying to figure out how to get off the purchase screen and gave up since there was no “no thanks” or an “X” on the page to leave and not buy! I’ll find something free like it should be since it’s just note app…. I’ll spend my money on lunch instead. **Developer response:** We’re sorry you spent time looking for a way past the purchase screen. In version 7.0.0, we removed the mandatory subscription screen. You can now use the free plan without starting a trial or subscribing. Please update to the latest version if you’d like to try it again. ### 1/5 — Useless *2026-04-07, version 6.3.0* Can’t get past the 3 day trial. The only option is to click the free trail. Ridiculous. ### 1/5 — Arnaque *2026-04-03, version 6.3.0* Arnaque ### 1/5 — paid only? *2026-03-29, version 6.3.0* Is this a paid only app? I can’t seem to get it to open unless pay them, but the description doesn’t say anything about that. Seems like a scam, I wouldn’t trust them. ### 1/5 — Unskippable "Free trial" popup *2026-03-17, version 6.3.0* Unskippable "Free trial" popup ### 1/5 — Why is this app so highly rated? *2026-03-15* It doesn’t let you write anything without paying :( **Developer response:** We’re sorry you couldn’t start writing without paying. In version 7.0.0, we removed the mandatory subscription screen. You can now use the free plan without starting a trial or subscribing. Please update to the latest version if you’d like to try it again. ### 1/5 — Locked out of content, forced payment *2026-03-12, version 6.3.0* I’ve used this for a long time. Now the app won’t even let you look at your previous work unless you sign up for a monthly subscription. It used to be great; now you should skip it. Sad to see. *2026-02-21* Was quite excited to find this. Excitement dwindled when I saw that this app yet created another directory in my icloud and in order to open or edit and save documents from my macOS TextEdit directory it opens it after navigating to it and then wants to save it to it's own 'file system' / directory... Why? To me, that's a fail. Just have it do what it does, and let me choose where!!! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Achtung Abozwang!!! - Im Appstore fehlt der InApp Hinweis, daher nur 1 Stern ### 1/5 — Scam *2026-10-08, version 7.0.7* After purchasing the app , suddenly all of the options are locked, ### 1/5 — Apple charges a subscription fee *2026-08-27, version 6.4.1* This tiny text editor is most definitely NOT worth paying a monthly subscription fee to use. It is (or was) an open source project distributed for free, but Apple is trying to squeeze every dime possible out its users. The company has become evil. ### 1/5 — scam *2026-08-26, version 6.4.1* application required subscription, closing pop-up about it its impossible, also creating new document cause new pop-up with information about unable to do it without premium. scam. ### 1/5 — 滚 *2026-08-18* 滚 ### 1/5 — What is this thing thinking? *2026-06-10* Absolutely the most complicated text editor I’ve tried yet. All I want is a simple editor that can read rtf format, and save and find things on my cloud drives. This one only uses Apple iCloud Drive, and installs its own folder. So if you already have a file started, it won’t see it until you physically move it into that folder. Then it starts in with templates and other stuff I don’t want. Not to mention you HAVE to accept the three day trial of some ai tool just to get the app to open, and then you have to go cancel the trial or get bill $5 a month. This is a terrible app and a total scam to get money from you. **Developer response:** We’re sorry the forced trial and file workflow made a simple editing task so frustrating. In version 7.0.0, we removed the mandatory subscription screen. You can now use the free plan without starting a trial or subscribing. Please update to the latest version if you’d like to try it again. If the file-location workflow still gets in your way, please contact us at contact@noteswriter.com with the storage provider you use. ### 1/5 — Zero Stars. The wretched UI would not let me not leave at least one. *2026-05-29, version 6.4.1* Still has the upsell uncloseable popup. And while it says it does not collect data, the “privacy” policy on its web page says some of its third party components may… And it uses cookies! WTAF??? So etwas gehört verboten. Schreib uns dazu bitte an contact@noteswriter.com. ### 1/5 — Clickbait *2026-05-22, version 6.4.0* I like privacy policy but honestly, it isn’t free as advertised when a. Can’t test without signup. B. Can’t use without subscribing. Banking on people forgetting to cancel eh? 3 days??? and then costs $5 or whatever? Moving on nothing to see here. ### 1/5 — App is Useless unless you buy TextEdit+ *2026-05-03, version 6.3.0* Every time I try the app, it asks me to purchase TextEdit+ so I can use AI and blah, blah, blah. No way for me to say nope. Useless. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — ***** Top *2026-09-13, version 7.0.1* ♦︎ TextEdit+ v.7.0.1 on iPadOS'26.6.1 ; ♦︎ 2026.09.13.Su.16:28.iPm. ### 5/5 — Great app *2026-05-21, version 6.4.0* 100% ### 5/5 — Non-functional *2025-08-25* Yessir, nothing like an app that is totally non-functional without paying first. No choice but to delete this junk. **Developer response:** We’re sorry the app was unusable without paying first. In version 7.0.0, we removed the mandatory subscription screen. You can now use the free plan without starting a trial or subscribing. Please update to the latest version if you’d like to try it again. After some time I paid for the “full unlock” and its worked like a dream. However since the last iOS update non of my PDFs open properly, all subsequent pages after page 1 have mysteriously disappeared! Please help! I use this app extensively for some rather important research l’m involved with and without it, after several years of work, I would need to virtually start from scratch. Any help appreciated! ### 5/5 — Excellent *2024-02-20, version 5.2.0* Excellent app. Wish there was an macOS version. ### 5/5 — Fabulous *2023-10-01* I have been using this app for several years now and have found it to be the best of what is currently on offer. Compatible with all my files, easy link to iCloud documents. Great to use for first drafts before moving on to more advanced finishing software like Pages and Word. Also good tech support ### 5/5 — Die App war bisher schon gut … *2023-04-26* … und wird dank kontinuierlicher Weiterentwicklung immer besser. Weiter so ;=) und Danke ! ### 5/5 — Text Edit on iOS/iPadOS *2023-02-27, version 4.2.1* If you use TextEdit on MAC and need it for iOS/iPad OS then look no further. Use the same iCloud folder for both apps and you will thank me later. --- *Data collected daily from the US App Store and indexed by [AppsHunter](https://appshunter.io/).
