## What is The Assembler?

Learn Assembly programming and binary operations by painting little pixel art pieces. The app teaches different operations in each of the ten chapters. For each of the chapters you program an image with a limited set of commands. Eight rows of 8-Bit Registers turn into your canvas. Use Assembly to manipulate the values in every register, thus creating an 8x8 painting.

'The Assembler' was made as a small and fun introduction to Assembly, Programming and the Binary system that powers it all. The first version of this app was made for the Swift Student Challenge 2022 and won!

I hope that you enjoy this project as much as I have.

## Key features

- Learn Assembly programming
- Understand binary operations
- Create pixel art on registers
- Ten chapters with progressive learning
- Interactive 8x8 canvas
- Introduction to programming fundamentals

### 5/5 — Cool, thx, but…

*2026-03-23*

- Lena

### 5/5 — A fun way to learn assembly

*2024-07-17*

I was much more familiar with ARM assembly many years ago, but it’s been a long time since I’ve used it, so I’ve forgotten nearly all of it. This app proved to be a very effective and entertaining way to refresh my memory. It explains all the low-level concepts very clearly, and keeps me engaged a lot longer than a decompiler and a textbook do

**Developer response:** Thank you so much! Good to hear that you had fun whilst learning.

### 5/5 — Macht Spaß!

*2024-05-24*

Hilft ein bisschen die Grundlagen zu lernen. Mit GameCenter und der Einleitung kann man auch ganz gut anfangen.
Obwohl ich noch mehr Tipps und Hilfe nicht schlecht fände :)

### 4/5 — Fixed: chapter skipping - nice

*2024-05-18*

They fixed the chapter skipping bug, nice. I've only just restarted, but it's so good that I came like this exists. Looking at assembly code is really important just to understand what is being produced by most programming languages. Occasionally comes up, but is often too arcane to be used because most people don't have exposure. I'm excited to work my way through this game. There may be some game design elements that could be improved (e.g.when they introduce MVN the task doesn't seem to benefit from its use) - still fun and accessible.

**Developer response:** Thank you so much. I’m happy you like it. Thanks for the feedback on the MVN chapter, I’ll see what I come up with for the next update. Hope you continue to have fun!

EDIT: This issue is fixed in the version 1.1 Update.

Hey,
I'm Lena, the developer of the app. Thank you for downloading my app.
I am not sure I am aware of the issue you are describing. Maybe you can help me fix it. Currently I am working on an update. I would be delighted if you could email me a description of what's happening to: lena@fancygoose.dev
Thank you

### 5/5 — Mit GameCenter noch besser

*2024-05-07*

### 2/5 — Neat. Currently broken though.

*2024-04-09*

Every other chapter (for first 5 that I’ve seen) auto-concludes.

Fun intro to assembly if ever fixed though.

**Developer response:** EDIT: This issue is fixed in the version 1.1 Update.

### 4/5 — Neat. Currently broken though.

Every other chapter (for first 5 that I’ve seen) auto-concludes.

Fun intro to assembly though.

### 3/5 — Poor UX

*2023-12-20*

I really wanted to like this, but issues as simple as not being able to cancel a partially written command make this very irritating to use.

**Developer response:** Hey,
Thank you for the feedback. I’m sorry you didn’t have a great experience. I fixed this issue in the new update. Really hope you can like the app a little more now.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 3.4 — 2026-03-22

Fixing the views for small iPhones! The app should now show correctly on iPhone SE and other small phones.
Added an option to export artworks in the last chapter.

### 3.3 — 2025-09-15

Bugfixes and improvements
- squared all squares again
- changed the chapter list to look prettier (I hope its prettier now)
- added some accessibility improvements (Increased contrast, differentiating without colour and reduced motion)
- added some padding on help page and settings page
- linked links to things
- decided if titles will be centred or left aligned
- changed some background colours around

### 3.2 — 2024-12-23

Wohoooo! I hope that I published this before the end of 2024. I’m excited to show you some things I’ve been working on.

First, I’ve addressed a pesky crash on macOS. You can now actually open the levels menu without the app crashing. WOW!

Next I’ve finally added support for Dark and tinted icons, and that for all of the icons. My personal favourite is probably the Dark-Mini-Icon, with the Light-Flat one as a close second.

For iPhone, I’ve gotten some great suggestions from you. With Peek-and-Pop, you can now preview solutions with ease. When you hold the button leading to the solution image, you now get to see the image pop up and your typed command. Once you let go of the button the view disappears. That way you can check your command before executing it!
I've also added new animations when you type, I had quite some fun picking them, I hope you like them too!

Recognising that all those animations are a bit too much for some, I’ve added support for reduced motion. This means if you prefer to minimise movement for a calmer interface, you can do just that. All you have to do is toggle ‚Reduce Motion‘ in the systems accessibility settings.

To keep things fresh and challenging, I’ve changed up some chapters. Here (again) I’ve got some great suggestions from users.

Finally, I’ve worked on fixing some text contrast issues, ensuring that everything you read is clear and easily legible. (Especially the small one in the introduction.)

Each update is designed with you in mind, aiming to make the Assembler a bit more delightful.
It’s been a wild year for me and this app, thank you to involved in this.

Happy learning!
