### 2/5 — Disappointed

*2026-08-29, version 13.147.0*

I continue to not receive my subscribed emails. Customer service is hard to reach and slow to respond.

### 3/5 — Hit or Miss

*2026-08-26, version 13.147.0*

The Athletic used to be the standard for sports journalism and some of its content still hits that mark, but the quality has been diluted with click-bait, listicles, and articles badly in need of an editor. Still worth the price if you're willing to wade through a bit of garbage to get to the good stuff.

### 4/5 — Pronman sucks

*2026-08-24, version 13.147.0*

The app would’ve gotten 5 stars but Corey pronman shouldn’t be a writer. Destroys the credibility of this app and the writers. I don’t know how he can still be employed. He must have some blackmail or something.

### 3/5 — Can’t pick up my preferred soccer team’s news

*2026-08-24, version 13.147.0*

The quality of the journalism is great! I just wish I could find stuff that interested me. The soccer teams I’ve selected to follow generate news but don’t appear in my news feed, unlike the US-based NFL and MLB teams I follow. It means a lot of hunting around the app for content I like.

### 2/5 — Has gotten worse and worse over time

*2026-08-23, version 13.147.0*

Has genuinely gotten worse and worse. The removal of the home page and introduction of games is a downgrade.

### 3/5 — Minor issue

*2026-08-23, version 13.145.0*

Only thing keeping it from being higher is the homepage not changing when removing something from your followed teams/leagues. Pretty annoying

### 3/5 — Need more Buffalo Bills articles

*2026-08-18, version 13.145.0*

The volume of articles about my local team doesn’t seem to be what it used to be. It is football season- trickling an article every few days isn’t enough. I get way more from my local paper

### 1/5 — Broken algorithm

*2026-08-17, version 13.145.0*

Pushes stories unrelated to the sports I follow, unable to fix this.

### 1/5 — Impossible to cancel

*2026-08-16, version 13.88.0*

They have created a doom loop impossible to navigate. Contact customer service doesn’t exist. Cancellation only via a NYTimes account even though I don’t have one.

### 1/5 — woke + sports

*2026-08-14, version 13.146.0*

its like a normal sports app, but instead of finding a refuge from politics and a place to relax from your busy life, you’ll be dropped right into the same insufferable politics you can find in the rest of the the ny times sections

### 1/5 — Shocking

*2026-08-13, version 13.145.0*

Can’t log in to account even though I’m a new subscriber and apparently there is nobody available to help. Useless

### 1/5 — Cannot disable notifications for the Pulse Newsletter

*2026-08-13, version 13.146.0*

After over three months of complaints by many on the Internet, there is still no way to disable the daily push notifications for the Pulse Newsletter.

There is configuration to disable and enable notifications for all of the topics you follow, but no way to disable The Pulse Newsletter notifications.

### 1/5 — Annoying Game Notification

*2026-08-11, version 13.145.0*

I get spammed with a notification for their games in the app. It is turned off in the settings. Support was not helpful at all. Moving back over to thescore.

### 2/5 — Every thing is for you

*2026-08-10, version 13.145.0*

I don’t need my sports content curated. I don’t need 5 “for you” sections fed by an algorithm. I want to explore and read organically.

### 1/5 — Click bait

*2026-08-10, version 13.145.0*

Too many articles are designed to elicit Fox News or CNN comments instead of sports. They got lazy

### 1/5 — New App Release Not Working on IPAD.

*2026-08-07, version 13.145.0*

Says you need IOS 18. IPAD says you have the latest IOS version loaded. Perhaps the programmers might want to take a look at this!

Unable to load and read comments on my IPAD. Not sure what has changed from the past, but nearly impossible to contact anyone at the NYT or The Athletic for guidance on how to resolve. Chatbot useless.

### 1/5 — Garbage Content in my feed every day

*2026-08-05, version 13.144.0*

Yo - NY Times! I don't give a toss about soccer or for goodness sake, trading cards. My preferences are selected in the app but I get fed content I have no interest in. Stop that shine!

One used to be able to report a problem directly but no it goes through NY Times chat. Good grief. Put your AI to work and let me exclude nonsense I don't want to see. That is the whole point of content delivery this decade. Wake up.

### 1/5 — Jumbled stories

*2026-08-04, version 13.143.0*

The type is always jumbled together on every story making its very difficult to read. Whoever set it up should be let go.

### 2/5 — Degrading fast

*2026-08-03, version 13.144.0*

Was a differentiated class of sports writing of the highest caliber. Top beat writers joining The Athletic to bring broader and deeper sports coverage. Easy 5 stars!! Since NY Times purchase and likely related to their subscribers and income declines, they’ve been cutting staff and coverage. Too many AI writes, stupid factually mistakes and politically based articles weeding into this sports entertainment outlet. The comments section has become a place of some great sports insights but too often a distracting wasteland of political intolerant vitriol that has nothing to do with details of the article. Just brainwashed liberal BS ruining another fine institution.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — No option to remove US sports

*2026-08-31, version 13.148.0*

Progressive deterioration under the NYT. Pushing US sports outside of the USA makes no sense, they have minimal resonance despite what the internal perception is. Why have tailored feeds to my interests only to the litter it with sports like nfl or wnba that I don’t care about? Add to that the terrible advert partners when the app used to be ad free and the experience is worse than ever

### 1/5 — Unwanted Pulse Notifications

*2026-08-30, version 13.148.0*

Please stop sending me unwanted Pulse Newsletter notifications. I have no interest in American sports and there’s no way to turn off the notifications as they aren’t listed in the settings. I have previously contacted NY Times and all they’ve done is forward it to the team at The Athletic and no one has even responded to me.

### 1/5 — Offensive Reader Commentary

*2026-08-28, version 13.148.0*

This app features reader comments that are often offensive, derogatory and mean spirited. This is a New York Times owned product but unlike reader comments published in the NYT, there is minimal attention to comments in The Athletic. The feature should be carefully moderated and managed to maintain civility.

### 1/5 — Thieves

*2026-08-28, version 13.148.0*

They are thieves, they make it intentionally hard to cancel your subscription. You have to wait in a Q of about 70 people before you can talk to someone and even then they lie and tell you they’ll contact you and never do. SHAME ON YOU THIEVES!

### 1/5 — What Happened?

*2026-08-25, version 13.148.0*

I have been a subscriber since the beginning, but I’m looking forward to my subscription ending. Once an excellent platform for football (soccer) fans, the NYT have completely destroyed any semblance of literate and informed journalism, preferring a populist circus, strewn with editorial errors and poor fact checking- all of which is blatantly censored to fit the NYT’s questionable political agenda.
The best writers have long gone. In their place, a bunch of sycophantic halfwits carry out the NYT’s objectives. The once well-rounded and broad podcast content is watered-down nonsense and the comments sections- once a forum where the writers would interact with readers- are ugly echo chambers where idiots are free to push their own hateful political narratives.
I would not recommend The Athletic to anyone even if it were free.

### 1/5 — Dire usability

*2026-08-24, version 13.147.0*

Upgrade items blocking page

### 1/5 — No way to report iOS App Bugs anymore

*2026-08-20, version 13.147.0*

New bugs are constantly introduced in new versions. The latest is the disappearance of the toolbar at the bottom when opening an article. No way to report bugs in the app any longer.

### 1/5 — Can’t login

*2026-08-19, version 13.147.0*

I’ve tried a few times to subscribe via NYTimes after they got bought and have always had trouble logging in. It’s really frustrating, I think the athletic has great coverage. Just wish I could actually use the app.

### 1/5 — Riddled with ads despite subscription

*2026-08-19, version 13.145.0*

You would think the monthly subscription price would cover an ad-free experience, but apparently not. Pathetic.

### 1/5 — Too many sports in headlines I don’t follow

*2026-08-18, version 13.145.0*

Why do i see nfl, mlb, nhl, and nba in headlines?I couldn’trw1987 care care less about any of them.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Fantastic app but a request (not sure where to put it)

*2026-08-28, version 13.147.0*

Overall fantastic experience! Was not going to use paid app because I use the ESPN app, but ads on every video took their toll! Everything is so compact and readable with fantastic coverage and articles posted everyday! One thing I want is a podcast for the nats and the caps as those are the hot teams in washington right now! Make it happen! Go Athletic!

### 5/5 — World Cup

*2026-07-19, version 13.142.1*

NYT coverage has been stupendous. The predictions score game and the connections game has been so much fun. I’m a new big fan of the Athletic.

### 5/5 — The Best

*2026-07-19, version 13.142.1*

There was a time you would of haD to subscribe to 100 publications and 30 newspapers to get the depth of coverage. There is something there for every sport interest. It turned the sports media world upside down when they all collectively assumed that no one would read—just give them a quick video of the obvious.

Once again they were wrong. Intelligent people can and do READ.

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2026-07-11, version 13.141.1*

I get my news from nowhere else. Live activity are broken on iOS 26.5.2

### 5/5 — Impressive Coverage

*2026-06-29, version 13.139.1*

Consistent and always current, love them.

### 5/5 — Saved Favorites

*2026-06-10, version 13.137.1*

The Athletic is fantastic. A modern-day version of The National magazine. However, as of today favorites are disappearing? Please push a fix. Thank you

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2026-06-08, version 13.136.2*

So much pro insight easy access to so many games well actually all games 5 stars love it

### 5/5 — Love this App

*2026-06-04, version 13.136.1*

It’s an all in one, so I even keep up with sports I don’t think I like. At age 84 it makes things easier😊.

### 5/5 — Awesome Soccer Reports

*2026-05-27, version 13.135.0*

Amazing insight into world soccer news from all regions, leagues, and cups.

### 5/5 — Best Premier League coverage anywhere

*2026-05-22, version 13.134.0*

My trial subscription to the NY Times netted me access to The Athletic which I have enjoyed since day one. I gift articles to my sports fan sons-in-law about their favorite teams and I plan to include them in a family membership next.
