However, it seems to be made in the UK, so some of the spellings and clues will be geared towards that. ### 5/5 — If you like crosswords this will test your endurance. *2023-11-16* I have just completed the second release of ‘The Big’ crossword, having completed the first release last year. It took just over 6 hours spaced over several days to complete the 1300+ clues, was a lot of fun and a good test of most of the skills required to complete more normal-sized crosswords, including anagrams, (not too) cryptic clues, and knowledge of a varying range of subjects. The addition of a second puzzle just makes it even more worthwhile. I think the cryptic clues are harder in the second one, which has as great a variety of clue categories as the first. Not only are they much too frequent, but it tells you that an advert is imminent, locks it for 5 seconds before the add appears AND also removes the clue! What a pity there is only one puzzle though. I deleted it once I’d finished first time and then have downloaded it a few months later to have another go at it! **Developer response:** Hello TrampledBrain, there is now an extra puzzle to amuse you! Regarding adverts, you can pay a small one-off fee to suppress the adverts. That also gives you unlimited hints as a nice bonus. ### 5/5 — Great app! *2022-10-28* I only recently got round to trying the iPhone version of this app and loved it. So many intuitive features, eg: going to and from linked words is easy; not having to re-type crossing letters; clear visuals on iPhone screen; easy to jump in and out of specific Quests; great feedback on progress both with Quests and overall. The 10% of clues being cryptic (the rest being straight clues) combined with their clear explanations make it a great learning tool for people starting out on cryptic solving. Although it’s very large, this tells you if you submit a correct answer- which is essential for such a big crossword but is also very satisfying and makes completing the crossword so much more enjoyable. Some clues, you have to think outside the box. The answers depend on how the clue is read. I hope you bring out another one soon ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — TOO MANY ADDS *2025-08-25* There are way to many adds hard to get on a roll and enjoy playing when after every 2nd or 3rd clue there’s an add😡😡😡 ### 1/5 — Tons of ads, only one puzzle? *2022-07-28* Wish I had known before spending money on the “remove ads” option that this was a one trick pony, once you solve the puzzle that’s it, it doesn’t do anything else. Feels like the extremely frequent ads are intended to push you into paying to get rid of them before you discover that. ### 1/5 — Useless *2021-04-15, version 1.0.4* The game locks on to an ad and makes it impossible to continue without restarting the device. I would happily pay for an ad free version as with other Teazle crosswords. ### 2/5 — Legitimate interest cookies? *2025-11-30* I used to love this app but, following a recent update, I now have to go through a vast array of cookies to decline them all as there is no button to automatically block everything. Why does this app request consent to store cookies on my device? It is not a website and none of the other apps from this developer have asked me to confirm cookie consent before. In my humble opinion there is no such thing as a ‘legitimate interest’ as tracking by vendors I don’t know is not acceptable. ### 2/5 — To many adverts *2022-03-08, version 1.0.4* I found the adverts repetitive and annoying. There are to many every three answers prompts another advert so that’s why I’m giving it a low score ### 3/5 — Crash *2026-03-16* If you complete the third puzzle, nothing happens: the app freezes and no controls work. Only option is to force quit. Reopening just re-opens a frozen app with no controls ### 3/5 — Mostly fun with stupid “Cryptid” clues *2022-10-07* This crossword was fun, mostly. About a third of the clues are these “Cryptid” clues that make sense only about half the time. Example: “Learned drunk with the queen at one” (8). The answer was Literati (the explanation was “Lit+er+at+I”). That makes zero sense. Overall though it’s a decent crossword that’s worth the $2. Especially to get unlimited clues for their ridiculous Cryptid clues. ### 3/5 — Probably the only honest review. *2022-03-20* This app has major issues here and on android. A few of the clues are just plain wrong or mixed up. Some of the clues are very British, "Estate" as a truck for an example, and extremely antiquated at that. Be prepared to take forever, or watch ads for coins. You WILL need them. Other than the above mentioned issues, it's a good time waster. ### 3/5 — A reasonable distraction *2020-05-26, version 1.0.4* Very American with some really weird definitions not normally found in UK English. Also heavily peppered with American place names. Cryptic clues are sometimes quite naive. Just finished the third puzzle, but upon filling in the final clue the app crashed and I didn’t get a win screen. Every time I go back onto that puzzle it seems to fall over. These clues seem so much better also ### 5/5 — I love this developer’s apps! *2025-07-17* In an ever increasing world where companies are confining customers to subscription services (sometimes as well as adverts every time you push a button!), it is so refreshing to see a developer working differently! I find Teazel’s crossword apps so accessible for this reason - yes they carry adverts in order to maintain themselves as a business which I totally understand, but what I like is that for a couple of quid, you can remove the adverts and contribute directly towards the developer’s games! For just a one-time £3 purchase, all levels of hints are accessible as well as the removal of ads! Hints include First & Last Letters of any puzzle, limit letters to only those for a particular answer, or reveal an entire word! All puzzles are of a casual level. The app can easily be accessed offline, which really works for me when I am on the move and need brain stimulation on trains or in airport queues etc. I am currently also using ‘Crossword’ and ‘Spiral Crossword’ from Teazel that have similar pricing models to the above, which really works for me and the flexibility it provides! ### 5/5 — Brilliant crossword *2025-06-03* Just completed puzzle 1 today - it only took over 9 hours to complete !!! There were adverts, but they weren’t too often or annoying like other apps that I use. Really enjoyed solving it, some clues are easy, others are really hard (as they should be). I’ve already started on puzzle 2. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes crossword puzzles.
