Reviews:

"Squashing Makes Me Feel Good!" - Touch Arcade 5/5

"It’s just brilliant fun. Shoot stuff, smile, shoot more stuff." - Pocket Gamer 9/10

The Bug Butcher is an intense action shooter, wrapped in stylistic 2D art, and smeared with humor where timing and fierce reflexes are paramount!

The gameplay has an extremely simple core mechanic that is easy to understand, but hard to master. Plus, who doesn’t love a universe where you wield a beefy arsenal of military grade weaponry.

The core mechanics hold old ties from the classic arcade shooter “Super Pang” where you shoot vertically, but with modern day twists. You are Harry, a brash and tenacious exterminator who has a knack for decimating bugs.

Harry’s current assignment takes him to the infested futuristic research facility on planet Zoit. The surviving and dwindling number of scientists employed him for his slaughtering skills. Harry’s mission: survive until the decontamination of the building is complete, hoard coins like his life depended on it, and protect the scientists at all costs. Watch out for the spiders as they have a particular fondness for rubber encased scientists. After landing, you will move from room to room through the facility blasting rockets, lasers, and wielding the power of lighting upwards at anything not human.

### 2/5 — Desperately needs to be able to move the controls

*2025-06-30*

I really want to be able to play this game, but this game‘s controls were clearly designed for older iPhones that had a home button and therefore big bezels on the edges of the screen for your hands to rest on. The controls are tiny and allll the way in the corners of the screen. It’s impossible for me to play for more than 20 seconds without developing wrist cramps :( I know this game hasn’t been updated in years, but it seriously needs this minor fix. You need to be able to reposition the buttons on the screen to be reachable.

### 4/5 — Great title, make more

*2025-03-07*

Great game, it even has gamepad support

### 2/5 — Fun game, bad controls

*2025-01-25, version 1.0.7*

The game is fun, but the screen buttons positioning is really bad. Hopefully they can make it adjustable

### 3/5 — Needs better control location

*2025-01-23*

Game could be amazing but the location of the controls makes it really difficult to play. An option to move them would really help or make it so that they are not so close to the edge of the phone screen.

### 5/5 — THIS GAME IS SO FUN

*2025-01-06, version 1.0.7*

It is a challenging and fun game. I love crushing bugs and shooting spiders before they eat the scientist.

### 5/5 — It’s good

*2025-01-03, version 1.0.7*

It’s good

### 4/5 — Fun game but controls aren’t great

*2025-01-03, version 1.0.7*

This is a really fun game but it would be better if the size and position of the left/right buttons could be altered by the player.

### 2/5 — To hard and frustrating

*2024-01-22*

To hard and frustrating

### 5/5 — Super fun quick shoot em up game

*2023-05-02, version 1.0.7*

I’ve gotten more use out of this game then I have any other mobile game, it’s a great way to take your mind off your work for a moment to reboot your mind when things are not going well. It’s super fun quick break to get my mind off of something negative then refocus and get back to work feeling good. I felt bad that I only paid a 1.39 for it, so I went to buy it on the google play store but it’s only 99 cents over there to, maybe I’ll buy it on xbox or nintendo switch one day just to support them. Update: I just finished 3 staring all the levels on hard, there were a few bugs, where the actual bugs in the game would get stuck in certain places, but the problem certainly was not a deal breaker, the levels are short and you almost always die in them anyways so it wasn’t a big deal to simply restart the level when one of those fluke circumstances that caused a problem in the game happened (I understood the game hadn’t been updated in many years when I bought it so that was to be expected). I loved how this game could give you satisfying experience in such a short amount of time, most arcade and shoot them up games or just video games in general can’t accomplish this feat, and you have to be prepared to spend many hours on them, not Bug Butcher, Bug Butcher could give you a great Experience in literally less than a minute. Usually doing extra things in games that were put there to provide more value to the player are just tedious, but I actually enjoyed perfecting the levels and getting three stars on all of them as much as I did playing the game on easy the first go around. Most video games have cheesy stories, especially ones inspired by older video games, but I thought the cute little story in this game with its great sense of humour was an extra cherry on top. I won’t hold my breath for its release, but I’d love to see a bug butcher 2 game get released one of these days, if it doesn’t happen I’m glad there was at least one of them that existed.

P.S. It’s also appreciated that this was an up front payment game, almost all micro transaction games are intentionally built to be unsatisfying addiction machines instead of real games, getting the money out of the relieves the developer’s of the temptations to create legal scams in the games such as switching up currency’s and even worse actually ruining what could have been a good game by shaping it around taking advantage of week minded people in the addiction machine style. I know it is hard to make money with the up front business model these days, and there’s still quite a bit of potential to become wealthy creating a scam on the App Store rather than an actual game, so I had to give a shout out to the developer for using a legit business model for this game. I know it’s a shame that a developer deserves praise just for choosing not to be a crook, hopefully both players and game developers choose to treat each other better in the future, but for now this developer is one of the few that sets a good example.

### 5/5 — Incredible!

*2022-11-05*

It’s how arcade shooters should be made. Well worth it.
