It would be nice if it didn’t have to listen to sponsor message when I go from Wi-Fi to mobile i.e. leave from my house to go for a run. In addition, if I’m trying to use a recording at work (or incoming phone call )app will not stop playing in the background unless I delete the app. ### 2/5 — New app doesn’t turn the music off when a call comes in *2025-11-04* The album art and song do not advance with the music, which is annoying. The most annoying though is that the music does not turn off when you get a call if streaming on your phone, major flaw. ### 3/5 — alarm? *2025-10-21, version 4.16.3* i’m a regular car radio listener and downloaded the app bc they said it has an alarm clock function, but i can’t figure out where or how to use it to save my life. am i missing something?? ### 2/5 — Doesn’t work with Carplay *2025-09-29* Still doesn’t work properly with Carplay. If you try to use Maps at the same time, it shuts off. Doesn’t work with the screen split either. Also the song name, artist and album art don’t update in Carplay. Using it in Carplay is the main reason I have the app. ### 3/5 — stops in carplay when you switch apps *2025-09-14, version 4.16.3* it stops playing in carplay when you switch back to maps for navigation. it works fine if you keep the app open but i need to use maps so… it does this in all the new mpr apps. ### 2/5 — CarPlay NoPlay *2025-08-25* Very buggy with CarPlay. Main station rarely works. Cannot use app while using google maps in CarPlay. Previous version worked properly - did the new app go through any beta testing?? Apparently not and wild it would be released in its current (no pun intended) state ### 2/5 — New App is Pain *2025-08-21* The new app drops out on CarPlay if I don’t have *only* the app on the screen. And it often continues playing on my phone even after I pick up a call and I can’t turn it off or pause it anywhere in the app. The only workaround is to open a different music app and stop that app in order to bump the Current app to silence. And the station/song does not ever update when I go back in to resume which is just irritating not ever knowing what’s playing any longer. Major downgrade. Can we just go back to the old one? ### 3/5 — Love The Current *2025-07-30* Not so happy with the app. It is now pretty much broken for CarPlay. Plays just fine with the app on the screen, but switch to any other app, like navigation, and it stops playing. I’m not just a random complainer. I’ve been a member for years. Please fix the app. ### 2/5 — Needs a lot of work *2024-05-09* I recently started using this with Apple CarPlay. It has annoying issues: • the display graphics and song titles don’t update when the song changes. • the sound quality is poor. In particular, the volume level changes weirdly. • the bumper that airs when you start the stream frequently repeats about 15 seconds after the music starts playing • the pause/play/ff/rw icons on the screen do nothing With all these problems, why hasn’t there been an update in a year? ### 3/5 — Alarm clock? *2024-01-25* On the radio it was mentioned that the app had an alarm clock, and while I see the alarm clock icon in the Apple Store preview image, I don’t have the feature on my app. Is it no longer available? This is a feature I’d happily pay for! ### 3/5 — Like the current don’t like the app *2022-12-22* The app disconnects on a regular basis, so you have to restart your phone to get it to work again very frustrating. Of course this happens during one of your favorite songs. ### 3/5 — I haven’t been able to use the app in moths *2022-02-28* is this app still working? I haven’t had access to it in months. I love listening and can stream, but prefer the app. ### 2/5 — V1.3.2 EXTREME Battery Drain *2021-01-31, version 1.3.2* I love The Current, but the latest version 1.3.2 has some serious battery drain issues. The app ate 53% of my battery in 27 minutes of standby while playing music. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max. Stick with the web-based stream until they fix this issue. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — CarPlay is Awful *2026-01-06* Love The Current but the new app has been dreadful. It’d be an improvement to completely get rid of CarPlay support - it’s been horrible since the redesign nearly 6 months ago. Music pauses if it’s not full screen (so if you want to check a map you can’t listen), audio plays through your phone speaker when on a call somehow, it’s horrible. ### 1/5 — Buggy car play experience *2025-08-15* Car play will sometimes only work when the app is open in CarPlay and will immediately pause when in maps Keeping the app open on the iPhone fixes the issue but then it sometimes causes it to play two streams at once and keep playing after disconnecting from the car through the phones speakers. Only a restart of the entire phone will cause it to stop playing. On latest 18.6 with a 16e ### 1/5 — Bummer for Out of State Listeners *2025-07-26* I liked to listen to the Current via CarPlay, but this app cuts out unless it is displayed on the main screen. Which is pointless because the band and song names no longer refresh. Wanna use maps or Waze? Good-bye Current. Not cool for members who live out of state. Please fix! **Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback. We have tested and understand this is an issue. We are actively working on fixing this and you will see the fixed in an upcoming update. ### 1/5 — New App is a Major Downgrade *2025-07-19* The new app is worse in so many ways: 1. Song title and artist metadata no longer broadcast over Airplay. 2 Song title and Artist do not display on CarPlay 3. iPhone Now Playing screen does not show album art, song title, or artist. 4. Airplay casting control no longer part of app, casting to Airplay is now harder and less intuitive. I don’t understand why MPR wasted money on developing a new app when they are losing federal funds and the old app worked perfectly fine. What a waste of member dollars!! **Developer response:** We appreciate your detailed feedback. Point 4 has been fixed and you will see Airplay functionality within the app. Numbers 1-3 we are actively working on fixing and will be in an upcoming release. ### 1/5 — Can’t connect to local network… *2025-07-19, version 4.14.17* Can’t use the old app, seemingly, and this one wasn’t tested to make sure users can connect to a local network?? ### 1/5 — Where’s the alarm feature? *2024-07-22, version 1.4.5* No alarm functionality. The icon in the screenshots does not exist in the app. Downloaded it just for that feature. Waste of time. I see there hasn’t been an update to the app in a year so I guess I won’t hold my breath. ### 1/5 — Garbage *2022-10-04, version 1.4.2* Hardly ever works. Waste a lot of time attempting to stream this station. Gonna listen to records instead ### 1/5 — Terrible Audio Quality *2022-04-07* Remember 64kbps MP3s, RealPlayer, or AM radio? That’s what this sounds like. The content, the DJs, the playlist — none of it matters if it sounds like junk. We’re all surrounded by devices capable of high-quality audio everywhere, from headphones to home stereos, even to smart home voice assistants. This sounds awful, MPR. Your listeners deserve better. ### 1/5 — Great station/ lame app *2020-10-15, version 1.3.2* App just crashes and need to restart stream. ### 1/5 — Crashes *2020-07-19, version 1.3.0* I open the app, tap the main Current channel, then the app crashes. Then the app crashes every time I try open it again. What gives? I could stream from Apple Music but the app tells me what song is playing and I love using it up to this point. Would love to see the whole album cover. *2026-08-11* Long time Current listener and Minnesotan long away from the Twin Cities. I leave the app running on my iPad and love seeing the album art. I used to run the website playlist on my laptop to see it. There must be a better layout than blurring the bottom half. Otherwise, keep up the good work. ### 5/5 — Works w/ Carplay now Woohoo! *2026-07-13* I found that the new app does work with Carplay now. I appreciate that it got fixed. But now the app has completely disappeared from Carplay and there seems to be no way to get it back. ETA uninstalled and reinstalled the app and it has reappeared in Carplay! ### 5/5 — Meandering Minnesotan *2026-04-14* I went to university in the cities, graduated in 2008, and I now live in South Korea. I discovered all of my music on the current back in the day, and I recently read an article about reconnecting to local radio if algorithmic music services have you in a musical rut. I thought I would try the app, and see if I could reconnect to my more exploratory musical ways, and the app delivered (as did the great programmers, DJs, etc of The Current. Glad CarPlay was added 🫶 ### 5/5 — Love the update *2026-04-01* I love this new update. The album covers change as the music does as I stream the program. Please support your public radio station! Minor thing: Took a long time to figure out where the new Current 15 stream is. Maybe the subtle background “XV” that differentiates it from the main Current stream could be made more obvious? The other streams in that panel all have super clear text/logos for their names.
