During the pandemic and Trump-era I noticed that most news devolved into propaganda or opinion pieces on both sides of the aisle. This was wildly dismaying for me, no matter what your political stance is - news like this hurts everyone. Thankfully the Factual came around to save the day. They present news as it should be - news. They help filter through the garbage op Ed’s and get to what actually matters. They even rate individual sources based on their content and biases. You can easily set whether you lean right, left, or center to get more actual news from your political preference, but their daily digest is where they shine - displaying the truly important news and very nicely done polling. I felt called out because I had 3 main news apps I referred to at the time. I like The Factual app for providing credibility and political ratings for articles, as well as a timeline, and additional articles on the topic. Even now, it’s super hard to know which sources to trust, what the authors’ biases are, or even where to find credible information that is true. The internet gave us so many new ways of finding information about the world, yet it also introduced the dizzying problem of where to start and where to go next. The Factual was one of the only sites I found that had up-to-date source checking, as well as giving me new websites that I hadn’t seen before! Of course, you should still check other websites outside of the ones that the Factual recommends, but a level of caution should always be used with any news site as well. But The Factual makes things so much easier! All the mainstream media news outlets and a little bit of small news sites are shown to you, as well as author credibility and fact checking! The more sources you read from, the more you get to have a wider view of your topic. The Factual makes it that much easier, and if you don’t trust their fact checking, they even have info about how their algorithm works! This is one of the only sites that truly cares about the cultivation of unbiased information in terms of news media. Please give it a try! I’ve been reading it daily for over a year, and it is my first go-to in the morning to get a quick look with in depth articles if I want them, presented so I understand the credibility of the source and the specific article. Not every story from your "trusted" sources are always 100% factual. It's true that the majority of far-left & far-right media institutions distort the facts, but sometimes you'll also find that moderate, left, right & center articles aren't always 100% factual. Enter, The Factual. They don't curate articles for you, they've developed algorithms that process over 10,000 articles a day from hundreds of sources to determine the factual credibility of them. They then report a percentage "grade" based on factual evidence & 4 key variables, to help you make the decisions for what you'd like to read. Their polls even breakdown each answer, explaining what you would be voting for. Their comments on polls & stories are completely anonymous, allowing for educated debates instead of hate-filled drivel. Just try their 2 week trial period like I did, and I'm sure you'll come to the same resolution I did, to subscribe & support their hard work & creativeness in developing such a non-toxic, fact-based media news app. One reason for their subscription-based model is so they don't feel obligated to support an advertiser's agenda. The Factual is truly the only unbiased media news/trending topics iOS app on the market currently that I'm aware of. And with their multiple expansive categories, search ability & filtering, you'll always find a topic you're interested in learning more about. App should allow people to change their votes along with their comments. Maybe I'll increase my rating then. ### 3/5 — convenience via app - lacks features *2022-03-12, version 4.75* Pros: - allows filtering by factual ratings - shows trending topics - includes highlights and perspective analysis based on analytics Cons: - clicking on many of the news topics requires you to sign up for the individual news source subscription in order to read - leaving you with only the highlights and perspectives - doesn’t allow to save or favorite any stories, so there’s no way of going back to them in the future unless you search for them - sharing news topics means sending links to other source websites - which again means the recipient needs to sign up for that news source subscription if required Overall, I wish there were more openable features from The Factual that would drive to the highlights and perspectives vs one particular news outlet. I also wonder how/why they highlight a particular news outlet vs others. Would prefer highlights and perspectives from The Factual that aggregates key points and perspectives with links out to the news sources. **Developer response:** Thanks for the review and thoughtful suggestions. 1. However, I will say that the ratings lean more towards liberal than conservative. Liberal articles get a better rating than conservative articles. ### 5/5 — Best Source for News. Enter The Factual. Being able to see how biased an article is, how credible it is based on ACTUAL stats involving the source, writer, works cited, and amount of opinion vs simple true statements has been a game changer. Finding an app that doesn’t care about changing your mind or perspective but giving you the option to be fully informed and make your own opinions and conclusions has been great. Being able to stay informed and hold fruitful conversations instead of arguments has been stress relieving. Now being able to weigh in on my thoughts through their polls and knowing that anyone else who does is respectful and simply sharing their perspective without the motive to argue or change someone’s mind has been refreshing. ### 5/5 — Incredible Tool *2022-04-25, version 4.75* I wanted to be better informed, but I was stressed by trying to discern what was credible news or not. There’s a lot of bias in journalism these days. The Factual is an incredible tools that sorts through the overwhelming amount of “news” sources and presents them for you with a credibility grade. My favorite feature is the way the email provides a top headline from opposing points of view. It seems to me that every time I read those back-to-back, I think "huh, well that makes sense" at some point during BOTH articles. It's an excellent perspective tool for realizing that many issues are more in the middle than the extremely divisive but popular tv/radio personalities filling the nation's airwaves make them out to be. It has hugely helped to calm my uninformed "fears" with the facts! Just read The Factual and you will understand. In one hand, their human editors (yes, they still exist) cover a wide spectrum of opinions for each news headline very succinctly. These are available all the time through the app but delivered every morning via app notification and their email newsletter. This is the only subscription I pay for, and it's well worth it!
