## What is The Gaslight?

Gaslight is a private messaging app built for people who value simplicity and privacy above everything else.

No sign-up. No email. No phone number. No account.

Each person has a unique UserID — nothing tied to your real identity. Share it with someone you trust, they send a request, and you choose whether to accept. Until you do, no one can message you.

WHY GASLIGHT?
— No personal information. No phone number or email to sign up. Your identity is yours alone.
— End-to-end encryption. Every message is encrypted on your device and can only be read by the person you're talking to. Not us. Not anyone in between.
— Connection by consent. People reach you only after you accept their request — so your inbox stays free of spam and strangers.
— You hold the only key. Your account is secured by a private recovery phrase that only you possess. It lets you restore your identity and messages on a new device — and means no one, not even us, can access or reset your account for you.
— Protected on your device. Your recovery phrase is locked behind your device's own biometrics or passcode.
— Works offline. Your conversations live on your device, so you can read your message history even with no connection.
— Private nicknames. Label your contacts with names only you can see — stored on your device, never shared.
— Full control. Block or remove any contact at any time.

REAL ENCRYPTION, NOT MARKETING
Every message is protected using the Double Ratchet algorithm and X3DH key exchange — the same cryptographic approach used by the world's most trusted secure messengers. Each message gets its own unique encryption key, giving you forward secrecy: even if a single key were ever exposed, your past conversations remain unreadable.

NO PHONE NUMBER REQUIRED
Your Gaslight identity is a 12-word recovery phrase generated entirely on your device — never tied to your phone number, email, or any real-world identifier. Nothing personally identifying is ever stored on our servers. Restore your account on a new device anytime with your phrase.

VERIFY, DON'T JUST TRUST
Scan a contact's QR code in person to verify your safety number. A match gives you mathematical proof — not a promise — that your conversation is truly end-to-end encrypted with no one able to intercept it.

VANISHING MESSAGES
Enable vanishing mode on any conversation, and messages disappear after being read. Perfect for conversations that shouldn't linger.
