After a few years, I decided to revisit this game to take a trip down memory lane. I just finished my play through, and the journey I took was incredibly satisfying. To say that The Great Tournament is worth playing is an understatement, the story and world building is phenomenal, and all of the scenes are absolutely outstanding. Sir Robert is one of the most entertaining fictional characters I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading about, every companion you meet is enjoyable to interact with, and the impact you make in the kingdom feels greatly earned. This is simply one of the best games I’ve ever had the honor of experiencing. I could be missing it and will change this if that is the case but as of right now I can’t even play. ### 2/5 — Ridiculous ending *2025-03-23, version 1.0.11* I enjoyed the story and the choices you’re able to make throughout. However, the ending ruined the whole experience for me. If you fail to qualify in the final tournament, thats it. The whole game ends and you can’t go back without restarting the whole thing. And all it says is “you married Hannah and had 4 children” and thats the entire thing. Hours of playing just for it to end with one sentence. And this would be more acceptable if it felt like you had any sort of control over the outcome. You just have to hope your skills are high enough and you’ll be lucky enough for the game to decide you won each round. What made this so bad and annoying in my case was that I made it well into the game where I started getting random events, and I died to an overwhelming number of bandits, where the game wouldn’t let me retreat by failing all of them. My problem is basically I died to a random encounter far into the game and had to start over (so this is a rant along with a review). ### 2/5 — I’m very frustrated *2018-11-19, version 1.0.5* I have honestly spent more than a couple hours on this game and then bam. I’m killed by bandits. One lone paragraph and all my work is over. I’m very frustrated and understandably upset. Add a save function or revert to checkpoint or something. The game is long, and clearly divided into parts, narrative wise. It’s difficult to understand why I should waste all of that time if I’m going to be killed in a single paragraph. By BANDITS. ### 3/5 — Great Story Horrible UI *2024-07-19, version 1.0.11* The repetitiveness and unintuitive nature of the selection boxes meant that several times throughout the game k selected options I did not mean to. More specific examples below with spoilers SPOILERS During the section you are traveling around several times I traveled to a location by accident because I was trying to see how long it would take to travel to another place and never mind was not the default option. In my opinion the never mind or no consequences action should be the default. Then I ended the game on accident. The I’m in the middle of the tournament and asked if I want to quit or continue and the FIRST OPTION WAS QUIT! I selected next quickly by accident and that was it end of my whole game just like that. I know they don’t want people going back but you should be able to go back a slide or two max. I might just be bad but I found myself messing up options enough that it was annoying and now I am incredibly unsatisfied with the ending I got. And there is no way for me to go back through the story the same way again. ### 3/5 — Game keeps restarting *2022-07-19, version 1.0.9* I love the game but I haven’t been able to finish it because it won’t save my progress. It restarts from the beginning every time I close it. ### 3/5 — Liked it, but some major flaws… *2021-09-03, version 1.0.5* I’m a game designer, old school text adventurer and choose your own adventurer. There’s a fad these days to insert fake moral choices into adventure games - Telltale is super guilty of this. The “will you be good or evil” choice where the game claims “the character will remember you did this”, but then the plot sails along on rails and your choice makes no difference. The Great Tournament does this a lot. You can be cruel or kind, foolish or wise, with no apparent impact. There are frequent “choices” where you can tell the game is showing you the exact same response no matter what you picked, just for atmospheric window dressing. Likewise, to keep the plot on rails, it also sometimes produces consequences the player couldn’t possibly predict from their choice of action. It’s like a less extreme version of playing AI Dungeon, where saying “pat person on cheek” can result in the game making you slap them so hard it kills them. It’s the hand of the author dragging you unsubtly back to the main story path because they didn’t want to write a genuine world of free possibility. Which, I get it, who has the time to do that much work. But then just don’t give us those options if you’re going to immediately nullify them. Keep it to a two choice either-or instead of adding extra illusory choices. There are also seemingly interesting choices that have zero game effect - taming a pet fox who then…sits eternally in that town, and never matters again. Mining for precious metals and never finding any. Visiting a library only to fall asleep. Maybe these have different effects if your stats are different or you chose a different path - but then, set variables to hide those options if it’s not going to matter on *this* path or with these stats, so the player isn’t sitting there wondering why the heck they bothered. Similarly, you discover late in the game greyed out choices like wanting to learn to be a fire mage. What? Of course I want to throw fireballs! Why can’t I learn that? What early fork did I miss? Why can I see this option if I can’t select it and have no idea why it’s there? I still enjoyed about half of the game more than I thought I would. I enjoyed working for Sir Robert and his storyline. But then - ugh, the sudden “250 days to the Tournament” portion. At first, I tried traveling to the events, only to keep having random “you got delayed on the road” seeds make me miss them. Then, when I did make it on time, usually by showing up a week early and clicking Wait 1 Day seven times, I’d enter the event and get a single screen saying “You lost the event.” No gameplay. No idea whether stat failure or pure random seed generation caused the loss. Frustrating, time wasting and frankly, it seemed like the author was just tired of coding at this point and rushed out the ending. I finally gave up, and after exhausting all training and plot options and marrying Ashera, I wandered around pointlessly til day 20, registered for the tournament, and discovered oh, wait, that means the tournament magically starts right now? Good thing I’d already done everything else! I selected the “republic” boon, which…they ask you beforehand what boon you’ll pick if you win, and that’s not an option. Then you win and suddenly it is. And then you play GT2, and your saved game carries the boon over, and…it’s immediately voted down by nobles and your choice is nullified again. Overall…it’s a good effort. I think it would have played better as pure story with some RPG elements, instead of veering into the frustrating “250 days” thing. ### 3/5 — OK *2020-08-11, version 1.0.5* That I have an updated in two years is a little bit freaky and I have a suggestion you should be able to play as a princess or the king or so Roberts or Malik or any of the characters in the story because I myself am a girl and the fact that you only have boys playing is not right ### 3/5 — A fairly subpar offering *2019-01-19* This game held promise, but like all too many “Choose your own adventure” tales, your choices make little impact. The stats screen gives you little to go off of when making decisions, and oftentimes seems to run counter to what the character actually does. The writing in particular is amateur. There is a thing called readability, and it’s not here. The main problem is that every passage reads like the author was trying to impress his eighth grade English teacher. Grammatically correct, but lacks character, and leaves what could be exciting events grayed out and dull. The characters speech is in a similar fashion, so I wasn’t ever enveloped in the world because they acted like wooden puppets. What the best Choice games do (Tin Star, for example) is world-building. That’s to say, they create all the ambient surroundings to a degree that you feel like you’re actually in an adventure serial story. Those I would say are the two most glaring missteps in this game: should have read like plain language (characters speak to each other, so make them sound human!), and flesh out these kingdoms and lands to make us feel like we’re picking up that short sword ourselves, or riding in a rickety wagon. Adjectives are great for this, but more interaction by the player is also a great too to get them invested in that world. Meaningful interaction, with short effects evident, and long term effects likely. That’s all I have.
