### 3/5 — Jon L

*2026-08-27, version 11.5.8*

I’ve been a subscriber to Guardian Editions for about 4 years and whilst I still enjoy the paper and the quality of journalism, I feel that it’s been “salami sliced” so that it now seems significantly inferior to the product of 4 years ago. There are fewer articles with less insight and informed opinion than before. The loss of The Observer on a Sunday has made Guardian Editions less comprehensive and less good value for money.
I still enjoy the paper and will continue to subscribe but like so many things I can’t help feeling that it was better before.

### 3/5 — Unable to open this morning- AGAIN!

*2026-07-19, version 11.5.8*

I like being able to read à “real” copy of the newspaper and the supplements but, sadly, the app is getting worse at providing this. It fails to upload automatically, so they all have to be downloaded separately, and sometimes does not work at all. I am still unable to access Saturday’s content on Sunday morning. Needs urgent review

### 2/5 — Not great

*2026-07-03, version 11.5.8*

Really fed up of the app sticking during download and it being difficult to open headings to read.

### 4/5 — Loss of contact

*2026-06-24, version 11.5.8*

Inexplicably, I have been cut off from my daily ‘Guardian’ on line as it should come up under this app’s icon. Is it something to do with Apple?

### 2/5 — Narrow Spectrum of News

*2026-06-22, version 11.5.8*

Definitely not a National newspaper but more of a British Regional. Coverage of news events in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales is minimal, so much so that I am, with regret, on the point of cancelling my subscription.

### 2/5 — Laggy and crashing

*2026-06-20, version 11.5.8*

How can you release an update which patently doesn’t work

### 1/5 — Upgraded my hat

*2026-06-01, version 11.5.8*

Exactly as other users have reported, I can no longer display or open editions on my iPad, and I am certainly not going to pay 99 p a copy when I am already paying an increased annual subscription. Sort it Graun please, or as your pop up message has repeatedly informed me, there really will be “no subscription associated with this email”

### 4/5 — The “New” System

*2026-05-31, version 11.5.8*

Notwithstanding paying £18 per month, I cannot find the way to open Editions other that by buying each copy separately. Compare this nightmare with the simplicity of, for example, The New York Times subscription system. The Guardian site is peppered with supposedly helpful instructions, none of which actually work. Please do not drive us away from your wonderful newspaper.

### 1/5 — Used to be great…

*2026-05-30, version 11.5.8*

…but isn’t anymore. Won’t allow me to log in on my different devices - now wants me to buy individual issues, even though I’m a subscriber. Am now considering cancelling long-standing subscription if I can’t read what I’m paying for.

### 2/5 — Apple sub login

*2026-05-30, version 11.5.8*

Don’t tell me that you are improving the app for my benefit when you are just sorting out your security backend. Apple subscribers can’t login since you made your change. I get it, we are not paying as much as your digital plus subscribers but we are your loyal readers. I have paid since th app first appeared donkeys years ago and every update makes the reading harder but I stay for the content not the IT shambles every six months.x

### 1/5 — Can’t sign in

*2026-05-28, version 11.5.8*

I am told to sign in but the sign in button is not where the instructions say it is. I am deleting my account

### 3/5 — Glitch once again

*2026-05-28, version 11.5.6*

Can’t download today’s edition, deleted app and tried to reinstall. It says I can only download an older version of the app which requires iOs 17.6 or later, but my iPad is on iOs 17.7! This sort of thing happens too often, seems like every update has bugs.

### 1/5 — Very poor considering subscription paid

*2026-05-27, version 11.5.8*

Why does this app never work? I pay a lot for my annual subscription but whenever I use the app it fails. Download an edition to read offline. It shows as downloaded but as soon as you try and access it while offline on a train or in airplane mode, it’s gone. Reconnect to the internet after your flight etc and it’s back again.

### 2/5 — Poor

*2026-05-26, version 11.5.7*

I love Guardian journalism but i can no longer sign into any Guardian App. I have cleared all protections (why should I have to!) and caches etc, but am still being blocked. It must not be this hard for a not tech wizkid to get into content I have paid for.

### 3/5 — Technical problems

*2026-05-21, version 11.5.7*

I have no problem with the content, but am plagued by irritating glitches in the delivery and the difficulty of viewing that content

### 3/5 — Age

*2026-05-13, version 11.5.7*

I’m old, bad eyes figuring out the many aspects is difficult

### 1/5 — Objectivity turn off

*2026-04-27, version 11.5.6*

Newspaper once with news reporting ambition has become mouthpiece of a political mission. Sad. But very much in keeping with today’s ideology of grossness and greed.
Not for me, though.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Problems opening app every day

*2026-08-14, version 11.5.8*

Every day, when opening the app, I am told there is a problem. I then have to mess about signing out, signing in, ,re starting my iPad (which has the appropriate OS) and generally messing about, sometimes with one time codes, until I eventually get in.
This is not acceptable for a paid for subscription!

### 1/5 — Missing the big picture(s)

*2026-08-12, version 11.5.8*

I have been buying and reading the Guardian for time out of mind (41 years?) and have made peace with the Guardian Editions on the iPad. But since the recent changes it takes 2-10 minutes to load each morning. It is rapid on my phone but who wants to read a broadsheet on your phone? Today it downloads but refuses to display, anything, apart from the small images. It seems the Home Screen is frozen or might as well be.

### 1/5 — Technically awful - almost unusable

*2026-07-07, version 11.5.8*

I would echo many of the comments regarding the changes made a couple of years ago. I’m a digital + paper subscriber (which is far from cheap). I used to find the entire Guardian already downloaded to my iPad when I woke, and articles easy to read. Now I have a battle every morning just to download, the contents on Saturday taking forever. What will I try today? Press the “my library” button? Close then re-open the app? Delete then re-download the app? Once the content is downloaded it’s very hard to navigate: a facsimile of the print edition may sound like a good idea, but it simply doesn’t work. It’s difficult to browse and wery often I can’t see the bottom of the page. And the Guardian’s wonderful photography is often wasted as you can’t see the entire picture if it takes up a large part of the page (let alone spread over two pages). I have similar problems with the FT (is it the same engine?) but the Times and Independent are absolutely flawless and easy to use. Finally, while I understand the Guardian needs to preserve its income, I’m driven round the bend by constantly having to give my credentials including 2-step authentication.

### 1/5 — Great paper but they need to get their digital services up to modern expected standards

*2026-06-29, version 11.5.8*

No one would argue that guardian is a great paper, but their digital implication sucks. First there is the guardian edition and there is the guardian. No easy explanation what is the distinguishing differences between the two. The guardian addition tells you need an account and then does not take you anywhere to sign up. If you have a guardian account you cannot add it to the guard edition. It is all terrible and confusing. You need to get your act together and create a unified digital service which is easy to use.

### 1/5 — Guardian apps subscription on Apple

*2026-06-21, version 11.5.8*

I am really disappointed with the Guardian and how it says you can subscribe to the Guardian on Apple
subscriptions but then does not allow access to Guardian Editions - it does not make clear anywhere that I can see how to subscribe to Guardian Editions. I have just paid the annual subscription£114 subscription for the News App but wished I hadn’t and have cancelled this from renewing next year

### 1/5 — Terrible update

*2026-06-13, version 11.5.8*

This is just the worst. I can no longer access and the “help” has not helped. Now faced with cancelling my subscription and taking my business to another paper.

### 1/5 — Guardian Digital Edition for iPad

*2026-06-09, version 11.5.8*

From a digital perspective The Guardian has ZERO idea. The new app is awful, it lacks a decent usable interface. The customer support is a joke.

### 1/5 — Nightmare

*2026-06-08, version 11.5.8*

I have had problems getting into the app and now it does not work at all even though I have an up to date subscription. If you are going to have newspaper apps then at least get them to work. Really frustrating !!!!!

### 1/5 — Wretched

*2026-06-08, version 11.5.8*

Once upon a time, the was the Guardian iPad app. It downloaded automatically, was there every morning, and was always available to read offline. After numerous improvements, the auto download feature has to be reset every day or so, downloaded editions are no longer downloaded when you actually need them, and now, though they claim that Apple subscribers do not need to sign in, access is repeatedly barred, sign in prompts appear constantly, and one can’t sign in. It’s appalling.

### 1/5 — Stolen $150

*2026-06-01, version 11.5.8*

I paid $150 so I can access the Guardian Editions for a year. Less than half way through the year they now say I have to pay $300 for that service, so the $150 is essentially them tricking me into donating.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Fabulous app

*2026-08-02, version 11.5.8*

As good as- possibly better - than the print edition

### 5/5 — Essential

*2026-05-22, version 11.5.7*

Love The Guardian, and supporting brilliant journalism through this App is a no brainer.

### 5/5 — Absolutely wonderful!

*2026-05-10, version 11.5.6*

Thank you for the wonderful mix of literature, journalism and entertainment. I have read the Observer and Guardian since a child, and am now 61. Brilliant! Couldn’t live without you.

### 5/5 — Guardian Newspaper Review

*2026-03-07, version 11.5.6*

For essential information from the world at this moment , The Guardian provides such a wide variety of insights into this very complicated world of ours..also a a moment of clarity , reflection and relaxation , the Guardian provides the insights into the arts and culture and travel that I deeply depend on…

### 5/5 — Best paper in the UK

*2026-02-07, version 11.5.6*

You know what is news and what is opinion,

### 5/5 — Brilliant app

*2025-12-06, version 11.5.4*

Excellent journalism and a good range of home and international news. App is extremely user friendly

### 5/5 — Bal

*2025-11-29, version 11.5.4*

Balanced and fair reviews

### 5/5 — Respingo the electrónica Guardian

*2025-11-28, version 11.5.4*

I like the new daily Edition of the Guardian. It is a really good simulation of the paper version, but allows you to have articles read to you etc. Weirdly I do quite like to be able to see the adverts, even if just to ignore them!

### 5/5 — Sanity

*2025-11-27, version 11.5.4*

Invaluable independent journalism offering sanity in a fast moving global multi-crisis. In a time of fake news and spin it is crucial to have rigorous accurate journalism clearly separated from insightful opinion pieces. A contrast to other papers and BBC tv and radio.

### 5/5 — Honest journalism at its best

*2025-11-26, version 11.5.4*

The quality of reporting in the Guardian is second to none. They fearlessly aim to bring out the truth that politicians with an agenda of misinformation aim to hide. It’s always wise to treat press commentary with caution, but the Guardian rings true more often than most.
