### 3/5 — Getting worse

*2024-10-03*

App continually asks you to sign in. This week it failed altogether but no note or warning the site was down. Coming close to finding another news source.
On the plus side technical support responded quickly to my e mail but would it not have been less frustrating to post an error message

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback. We have a planned update release coming soon which will fix the issues you have mentioned. If you have any further feedback, please contact us at nq-digital.subs@newsquest.co.uk. We greatly appreciate any feedback that can help us improve the user experience in the app.

### 2/5 — Poor programming

*2024-10-03*

Random log in required : password retention randomly does not work ; puzzles only load if rebooted even if paper already downloaded :

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback - We are currently finishing work on an update for the app which will resolve the issues you have mentioned. This will be released shortly

### 3/5 — Comments

*2024-10-03*

Can’t seem to get access to leave or receive comments. Not as good as The Times app.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback. Commenting is not currently a feature within the app but we are looking at this as a possible addition moving forward.

### 3/5 — Well laid out and easily accessible

*2024-10-03*

The app works ok and is simple to navigate.
However, the connection and reliability of access to the app can leave a lot to be desired. It will frequently ask you to (re) sign in / register, sometimes not even recognising your log in details despite being fully paid up.
There are sometimes issues with supplements not appearing either.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback - We are currently working on an update for the app which will resolve the issues you have mentioned. We're aiming to release this in the next few weeks and this should improve the experience you have when using the app.

### 3/5 — Room for improvement

*2024-09-26*

Once upon a time the Herald had a separate app for the digital newspaper and another for headlines and individual articles. These worked well. Then they decided to combine the two, and there have been problems ever since with the digital newspaper. In the current iteration: the facility to delete downloads after e.g. 3 days does not work, and the dustbin symbol is so small that you invariably load the edition instead of deleting it: changing from portrait(single page) to landscape (two pages) results in a random jump to a different part of the paper: changing from main edition to a supplement or vice versa often requires a new sign in, when both have already been downloaded. I have not yet used the latest version of the app while travelling, but downloaded editions used to disappear if the iPad had been switched off. I am using a fully updated iPad Pro.

As an addition, today I tried to use the app offline for the first time. On trying to load (already downloaded) editions I was asked to sign in again - self evidently impossible offline. This happened with the previous app too. I suggest having a word with the designers of the Times Classic app, which I also use, and which just works.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback. We will review this with the development team.
There is a planned update release coming soon, which includes a number of improvements and fixes including some of the points you have mentioned. But we will investigate your other points and see what improvements can be made.

### 2/5 — Not good. Update

*2022-03-18, version 3.4.0*

Further update has resolved issue

### 2/5 — Keeps refreshing to home

*2022-02-21, version 3.3.0*

While reading an article it keeps refreshing to the home page. Very annoying.

I preferred the old app when it was still working, that would download as well so I could read with bad reception indoors if I remembered to refresh before taking my break.

### 1/5 — Waste of time.

*2018-04-06, version 3.0*

I would be rather embarrassed if I were the editor. This app is useless. There are better ways to waste your time.

### 2/5 — Not too good.

*2017-08-06, version 1.0*

This is really a shrunken version of the print edition which is impossible to read without magnification turned on. The content is good but this app is not. I can't even do the crossword which is not interactive. The photos are terrible. It is very expensive and difficult to get out of. I can't recommend this. Come on The Herald. You can and must do better.

### 1/5 — Awful

*2017-07-23, version 1.0*

Took a chance and a one month subscription, it's hopeless, print and pictures are out of focus when enlarged, magazines constantly crash and quite possibly the worst TV and radio section in print.

### 1/5 — Chairman67

*2016-05-03, version 1.0*

Appalling. Avoid.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Links from the app do not work even if you have a subscription

*2024-12-10*

The links in any article in the app take you to a page asking you to subscribe or log in again. Even when you have a subscription and are already logged in. The it won’t let you log in and brings you back to the subscribe page again. So you can’t access any article using a link from the app. Total waste of money. I have requested to cancel and get a refund but no response

**Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback - We are looking at ways to improve the in article link setup within the app and will be implementing changes to improve this experience. However we would highlight that we have made a number of improvements to the main app navigation to provide a smoother user journey when accessing content across the various different content categories. The in article links you refer to our not the primary way to access content within the app.

### 1/5 — Blank pages

*2024-12-05*

Spent £20 on a Black Friday offer but can’t see any pages on app. Just a blank screen. Online (Safari) web page continually asks you to login even though you are already logged in.

**Developer response:** We're very sorry to hear that you have experienced these issues. Neither of these things are expected behaviour, so if you can please contact us at nq-digital.subs@newsquest.co.uk with further details, we will do our best to resolve these asap.

### 1/5 — “Improvement”

*2024-06-10*

New app hopeless. No access to newspaper version. Intrusive ads. Yesterday’s news for most of day. V helpful tech guy sorted it- it lasted 2 hours. Cancelling my subscription.

**Developer response:** We're very sorry to hear you have not enjoyed the new version of the app. The issues you mention are not ones we've had reported by other users, so it's possible that these may be linked to an issue with the install of the app on your device.
If you would like to contact us directly at nq-digital.subs@newsquest.co.uk we will be happy to advise on how to resolve this.

### 1/5 — News Section not working

*2022-12-29*

Been using the app on my phone for a month now but suddenly the News section wont load any stories. The other sections "Sport"etc are fine but not the main news section has a blank screen. Tried the trouble shooting "uninstall, update etc etc" but still no joy. Can read the paper version but not as easy to read as the app version of the stories.

**Developer response:** Unfortunately there was a temporary issue with the latest new timeline in the app which has now been resolved and all elements of the app are working as normal, giving you all the latest news from The Herald alongside the daily editions and interactive puzzles.

### 1/5 — Buggy app no longer usable

*2022-12-20*

For months now, in IOS, if you’re in the NEWS mode, articles flip back to the main browser front page randomly as you’re reading them. Doesn’t occur if you use the PAPER mode but that is pretty hard to read on a phone. The Herald/Newsquest will say they have v little budget to maintain this app but it costs money to be a regular reader and the product doesn’t work properly any more.

**Developer response:** Thank you for taking the time to reach out and detailing your experience with our app. We have noted your feedback and will look into ways in which to improve this experience.
Thank you and kind regards

### 1/5 — Not possible to log in

*2022-02-26, version 3.3.0*

The app doesn't really work at the moment

### 1/5 — Poor show

*2022-02-09, version 3.3.0*

Why change the app to this poor update? Unable to enlarge screen, poor navigational tools. Altogether thinking of not renewing subscription when due for renewal.

### 1/5 — Is this really the app for a major newspaper?

*2022-01-27, version 3.1*

Until recently this app was fine for reading the digital edition. Now the Herald has changed something in the background and my subscription is not recognised. It’s fine in the website but no go with the app. Poor show Herald.

### 1/5 — Avoid at all costs

*2020-04-10*

I have been a Herald reader for many years and decided to try 1 x week of the digital version at £7.99
I downloaded the app and Apple took my money from my account.
However every time I entered the app and clicked on the front page to read the edition, a pop up appeared asking me to subscribe. No way could I get past this to read the newspaper.
I have tried to get my subscription cancelled but no chance. No interest or feedback from Apple.
I contacted the developer and explained the problem at length. I attached photos of the pop up and my paid subscription.
I had one standard reply which clearly showed the developer had not even read my email complaint. I emailed again and got no reply.

So, folks 1) Beware of Apple who steal money without reason or support and 2) do not bother with this app or any other from this lousy, disinterested developer.

### 1/5 — Never works!

*2019-12-12, version 3.1*

This app is very poor. It consistently fails to accept my login / password although the same credentials are recognised (mainly) by the website.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Problems of my own making

*2026-04-27*

Initially the Herald and National apps didn’t work on my iPhone, with text too wide for the screen. Very helpful people at nq-digital got me back on track. I’ve amended my stars to something more suitable :-)

**Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback - We're sorry to hear that you are experiencing an issue with with the app. If you can please contact us at nq-digital.subs@newsquest.co.uk we'll be happy to help resolve this

### 5/5 — What more could you want?

*2024-07-11*

A great app. It’s easy to use and not having to deal with pop-ups on every article is a huge plus!

### 5/5 — The best way to read the e-edition of the Herald

*2021-08-19*

This app is certainly the best way to read the e-edition of the Herald if you have a subscription to it. The alternative is to access it through your browser but I find the app a lot quicker and easier to use.

### 5/5 — Excellent app

*2019-02-26*

The Herald apps - both of them are super! The other thing is when you buy an annual subscription then your husband can also use it - so it works out less than £1 a week for all that access - really is good and extremely good value for money I’d say.

### 5/5 — Absolutely fantastic

*2015-04-10*

I am so pleased to eventually see my daily broadsheet on this platform. It's very simple and straight forward and reads just like a traditional newspaper, but comes with all the digital pinch & zoom to archive functionality. Well done The Herald.

### 4/5 — Good but please open links in the app not browser

*2025-06-18*

I like the app in general but one annoying problem is when clicking a link to another article, which opens the app’s browser window and loads the herald website with cookie and sign in requests. Surely it’s possible to redirect these to the app where I’m happily logged in?

**Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback - This is something we are working on currently and we hope to release improvements to the experience shortly.

### 4/5 — Puzzles

*2024-10-03*

Puzzles should be the same as in the paper edition daily

**Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback - We'll discuss this with the team and see if this is something we can implement.

### 4/5 — Could be better

*2024-09-26*

On the whole the app is very good but for some reason the puzzles page is very slow to update so one can read the news but not do the up to dare crosswords till much later that day

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback. We will review this with the development team and see what improvements we can make.

### 4/5 — Better than before

*2024-09-26*

Better than before. The home page doesn’t refresh automatically on my iPad you have to manually refresh. It’s still a bit clunky as an app. Asks you to re-sign in regularly in spite of no change in your status. This is a bit of a pain first thing in the morning.

### 3/5 — Frustrating

*2024-10-04*

The first day after I subscribed, changing from paper to digital, there was a technical problem which I was told about after several phone calls. I also had to phone to find out how to get the latest day’s paper. Not at all intuitive. Today the puzzles have not appeared. Once you have it, it is very clear and easy to read, but it leaves you wondering if it will work.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback - We are sorry to hear that you have found the app experience frustrating. We will review your feedback with the app development team and see what improvements we can put in place.
