As Northrop Frye said of it, the I Ching is a wise and benevolent oracle. It is my favorite. I usually use the coin method, but I enjoy the yarrow stalks in the app too. I usually meditate on my question at least the night before consulting the oracle so that my question is already to go when I consult the app. Then in just a few shakes, the Universe lines up and answers my question. To me the I Ching Is not a plaything, but a serious way of looking at my life. I consulted the Book of Changes at the beginning of the pandemic. My hexagram? Number 5, changing to number 17 with lines 2, 3, and 4. It as all came to pass. I also enjoy printing my hexagrams, even though they are located in the convenient journal. I’ve been using this app ever since it was released. This is my favorite version of the Book of Change, and it’s good to always have it on my iPhone, close by. It has an easy to use interface, a cool method to choose each line, and auto saves each divination. I've been looking for an app that uses the actual text, and now I've found it. ### 5/5 — A brilliant app *2014-12-09* I have carried around the Wilhelm translation of the I Ching for 30 years but no longer. This is the 'must have' app for serious students of the I Ching who wish to experience the profound wisdom this book has to offer. It does everything I need, question the oracle, lay out the hexagram for the present, lay out the changing lines and resultant hexagram for the future. It also has a journal function and an option to buy Book II and Book III. I cannot recommend this app too highly, an excellent app. ### 5/5 — They did it right ! The original. *2013-08-01* Well I was waiting for this, the original translation of R. Wilhelm. I have carried this book around the world for 25 years for the infinite wisdom it provides to who wants to listen. It is a classic. I do still like to throw the coins myself but what is important is that this is the real thing, the real book. The I Ching book of mutations is a strange world and at the same time familiar. Self knowledge is the ultimate goal here, the work has to do with a careful search for our character, attitudes and motivations in life. A mysterious spiritual book with enough Mystery that can make you wonder why one loves this book so much, it is like life: a miracle. It is an action book that never gets old and to have it in the iPad is a beautiful thing when one knows it is a cultural treasure. Get this study it you will be studying yourself and the workings of the soul of the world and your own. Thank you for the quality of keeping to the original translation version from Chinese to German by Richard Wilhelm. Before this iPad version my printed 25 year old book would stay home being too heavy to carry in my travels, now I will go with this magnificent source work everywhere. In my opinion this work the is inexhaustible. ### 5/5 — best *2012-09-04* 超值 ### 5/5 — 40 year student of the Wilhelm / Baynes translation *2011-10-05* The old worn yellow book has been once around the globe on my back. It has been a constant companion thru love and marriage, loss and regret, births and deaths. It had wisdom to offer whenever I was able to listen. My book is over 40 years old, my yarrow stalks are younger, probably only 30 years old Now my life runs on an iPad. Where else can you keep thousands of names and addresses, calendars for several family members a few different businesses, tasks accessible by project and context, instant communication and research? Now I can consult an old Chinese friend and record our conversations.. Here comes the important part, how did Flat Earth do with this application? If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would. The attention to detail is amazing. For example, they recognized the different probabilities between coins and stalks, and when throwing the stalks they describe where they are being placed in your fingers. Yes, to the unfamiliar--it all matters. The better the question; the more present you are as you discern the answer; the more truth comes out. Are there things that can be improved? Yes. in a perfect world, I would be able to import old journals, consult any translation, look at patterns in receiving certain hexagrams, trigrams, lines, or even asking the same questions. I believe they are adding some of these capabilities in future versions. But don't wait buy it now! Consider getting the Yi Jing version by the same author. Soon I hope we will be able to bring over the in app purchases of the Princeton Press version. I am quite willing to pay for different translations, but I would actually be even happier if they only had one engine for the casting of the stalks, throwing the coins, and capturing the journal entries. This is a great program, a wonderful source of wisdom. Buy it right now! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Can’t figure out how to manually input *2024-04-06* I thought I’d be able to manually input a hexagram so I could do it in person and journal on the app, but from what I’m seeing I can only cast a hexagram using the app ### 1/5 — I use this everyday. *2021-11-23* Updated: With the recent update my entire journal history was wiped away. Years of readings. Moments of profound contemplation, crucial turning points in my life and my realizations relevant to them. It was a huge loss for me. My previous review This is a really great app. It is a way to cast the Yi Ching, with some other great features. But it also includes a translation of the Yi Ching that is very good. Wilhelm's translation is my favorite. Reading the book feels like sitting with a wise old granddad that instructs you in what to be careful of as you navigate the world. It is exactly the type of wisdom our modern culture has eliminated from our character. The text alone is worth the price of the app. But that it includes statistically accurate casting makes it a really great value. It is easy to use. Really, get this app. Great product. **Developer response:** Since the app hasn't been updated in a while, this is most likely a temporary issue with syncing over iCloud. What a pity as this is the I Ching to have. Until they get the fix up, my advice is buy the book. ### 2/5 — Was wonderful; now it’s very glitchy with “coins” *2022-10-14* Was a wonderful app. Used for almost ten years. My dependable friend is now consistently glitchy and stuck and the forced use of the “coins” is performative, slow and annoying. Simplicity is good, useless ornamentation is not. Very disappointed. The only thing I would improve on is that it’s very tiny text and you can’t make it larger or stretch it out with a touch to make it larger and more easy to read **Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback. The default text font size of book content has been increased in a recent app update. Additionally, the app supports Dynamic Type, to allow even larger text. You can make text larger by going to the Settings app, under Display & Brightness > Text Size. That said, we understand some users like yourself may prefer an app-specific text size feature, and we are looking into providing that in a future app update. If I may be permitted one critique it would be that the bottom bit of text for the readings is cut off and I need to swipe up and hold to see all the text. This is on an iPhone 8 so not sure if it’s just my phone or not. Since I found this app I have been reading the text more infrequently and have learned so much more from Wilhelm’s writings than any other translation available. The app allows a deeper understanding of the trigrams and is a real treasure to own.
