Everything else about the Independent is very very good. ### 3/5 — Fair news, poor app *2026-07-28, version 11.0.16* Very biased- not independent. Eg pro joining the EU- no counter-arguments. I like the ability to listen to the script but the audio bar stays open making the reading of other articles harder. ### 4/5 — Excellent newspaper *2026-07-28, version 11.0.16* I have been a reader of the Independent for many years. I like the news and editorial content but I’m disappointed that readers’ letters have been discontinued. ### 3/5 — Informative, But Careless *2026-05-31, version 11.0.15* About to complete the first week of my subscription, I am finding The Independent informative, but rather careless with the good old typing. Many wrong words and truncated sentences. But I’m grateful for the news. The Independent is less prone to presenting opinion as news than the daily I’ve just left behind - although it does some of that, too. I look forward to learning to navigate the architecture of the site and the app. ### 3/5 — A Decent app but it overheats the phone *2026-05-28, version 11.0.15* The app is a decent app as news readers go. It has a couple of user issues (as you scroll the top bar appears and disappears and the text moves, which is annoying). The biggest problem by a long margin is it using the app for any length of time (5-10 mins or more) makes my iPhone 16 Pro almost too hot to hold. Other apps don’t do this, there’s clearly a bug in this app that is causing it to use way too much processing power than should be needed for displaying text and a few pictures. Need to have WiFi - so if you’re on a train journey with intermittent WiFi do not bother trying to read a newspaper if you subscribe as it won’t work. Bit annoying. Also, more positive and in-more-depth material too - More of the good news . Good developments in world/ projects/ actions/ movements/ discoveries. Repetition of grim news- same old - need info. but too often it’s towards the old authoritarian men in charge that the news seems to be heavily weighted towards, and to what readers hear about. It’s relentless, depressing and a turn-off. Saps hope. So much good happening - don’t let it get drowned out. ### 4/5 — Great writers *2025-07-12, version 11.0.13* I love the Independent - great writers, explains difficult issues, sees the world the way I do. I only gave it four stars instead of five because the letters page and the Mea Culpa column have been cancelled. I’m still hoping . . . ### 2/5 — The Independent App is no longer useful. *2025-03-30, version 11.0.13* I have used the online Independent for many years, in fact have subscribed since it went online. I had always recommended it to others as the way an online paper should be produced. Sadly I can no longer say that. Since the last update (I write in April 2025) I have been unable to find the correspondence page, and find the whole format frankly unusable. There used to be a single page with a thumbnail of each article by section which was very easy to navigate. Now, it appears I have to scroll endlessly through articles, some of which seem out of date, without any sort of overview of the contents. I am not in the slightest interested in videos or audio. If I wanted those there are many other places online. The new online Independent has become an utter shambles! I used to be a (modest) contributor to the letters page, but I can no longer find the letters page so have stopped trying. Were it not that my wife has retained the previous version of the app and continues to use it. I would have cancelled my subscription. That time may well yet come. ### 3/5 — Newspaper Reader *2025-01-20, version 11.0.13* I subscribed to the Independent when it went off print. So I want to read the paper, I don’t want to browse a website. The new format has added multiple steps between logging in and doing what I want to do. Should be user configurable to go direct to thevpaper. ### 2/5 — Good paper disappointing app *2024-12-31, version 11.0.13* The iPad app is disappointing, you can’t zoom in and out but if you increase text size the margins get huge! …so essentially cannot make text bigger without being silly. It is in need of update to the latest iPad app technology. Don’t like to say it, the Telegraph app is way better. Only the content is dreadful there of course! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Signed up for £1 p/m for 3 months *2026-05-25, version 11.0.15* I got charged £10.99 for 1 month although i accepted app’s £1 for 3 months in-app pop up offer. Then i’ve wasted huge parts of my day off work going backwards and forwards with customer services getting absolutely nowhere. Additionally for most of the day the app was telling me I still didn’t have a paid subscription and the last email from customer services could find no record of my payment. Really frustrating and wish i’d never bothered. The end result was effectively the same as being scammed ### 1/5 — Too Right Wing *2026-05-15, version 11.0.15* This was once a great newspaper . Now it’s a right wing mouth piece . ### 1/5 — 11.0.15 eats battery *2026-05-04, version 11.0.15* Since the 11.0.15 update the Independent app drains iPhone 17 battery and makes it run hot. ### 1/5 — i paid for premium .. *2025-12-09, version 11.0.14* … yet still, there is a massive big square at the top of every single page with a video which because it’s overlayed with apple’s “play” button (and i NEVER watch the independent videos…), it just sticks out and stinks like an advert. there is a reason there is not ONE other serious news app has this. it’s intrusive, redundant, costs you bandwidth you don’t even need to spend (actually this counts for both of us), and actually prevents me from reading the article, because…… ABOVE IT IS ANOTHER SQUARE ASKING ME TO LISTEN TO SOMETHING?? these two squares are as big as adverts so when you click on an article, you simply see NO TEXT, but two massive squares. well guess what? I’m deleting app….. and my subscription. get it right please, or at least give us the option to switch off these basically adverts when you have a paid subscription ### 1/5 — DO NOT SUBSCRIBE *2025-07-15, version 11.0.13* The Independent offers an introductory price and then doesn’t warn you when it’s up for renewal and then they take £99 and refuse to refund it. I only subscribed because I was in the recruitment process for a journalism job and then my mum got really ill and I forgot to cancel the auto-renewal and now they’re refusing to refund me. ### 1/5 — £1 for 6 months deal *2025-04-23, version 11.0.13* Careful with this, cost me £10.99. I assume I’ve a had a trial in the past, however, it wasn’t clear so a bit sneaky to be honest. ### 1/5 — Won’t let me log in! *2025-03-28, version 11.0.13* App downloads, lets me set up an account but then when I log in it keeps asking me to log in time and time again ### 1/5 — Terrible UX *2024-12-08, version 11.0.13* While having a traditional curated daily edition is welcome, the apps design is so half baked I can’t bring myself to use it. Single column layout looks terrible on iPad Pro, lots of white space, and endless scrolling to read a single article. Overall the app lacks basic features, and is frustrating to navigate. If I don’t hear from admin soon I will cancel the payment. I want to read the news and nobody should be required to create an account just to do that. It doesn’t shy from criticising either side of the political spectrum. The articles are honest, contain entertaining language from the writers characters, and all are there to be fairly acknowledged or judged. ### 5/5 — Feedback on games *2026-06-27, version 11.0.15* Good high quality puzzle games. The content I would recommend as there are some excellent journalists writing for the Indy. The app itself has flaws and would be behind the Guardian, Times and Telegraph in the look, feel and general user experience, which, since the Indy went full digital before any of their competitors, isn’t really good enough. In particular, the digital version of the newspaper is really poor. It does not format properly on an iPad with huge amounts of white space. The content is very limited with only a handful of business and sport articles which would barely fill one page of a printed newspaper, so how can this be a ‘replica’ of a newspaper. I will continue with my subscription, as I have read the Indy since it started in the 80s, but this app is badly in need of an upgrade. ### 5/5 — Keeping with what’s going on *2025-08-17, version 11.0.14* From an early age I have always enjoyed reading The Independent in traditional print format. I was gutted and frustrated when this ended. It took me time to come round to the new digital format, however 2 years in and whilst not quite the same I am enjoying articles and keeping up with world events through my phone. Great writing, interesting stories and a balanced political stance.
