### 1/5 — Too PC

*2023-04-05*

I love H. P. Lovecraft by why change something because ‘we want to be inclusive. Well you aren’t including people who love a good classic. In fact, you have actively excluded us. No thanks.

### 1/5 — Extremely short game for such a money

*2021-06-17*

I’ve finished it in around an hour, too bad.

### 1/5 — So disappointed

*2020-07-23*

I really wanted to like this game as a Lovecraft fan. It’s almost a kids game. The art is just plain silly. The writing is bad. If you’ve ever actually read The Shadow over Innsmouth you’ll hate this game. I didn’t even mind it was a text game. I’m not sure who this was made for. Honestly it seems like it’s aimed at 12 year olds. You can’t combine lovecraft with with the silly character art like that. Like it’s a Disney movie. I tried but I couldn’t get through it.

**Developer response:** Hello!
Too bad you didn't like the game. We are big fans of the "Shadow over Innsmouth" story ourselves, but we wanted to do something completely different with it. We were hoping that the screenshots would give a good overview of what the players can expect. If you change your mind, we can assure you that there are many story paths that take a more serious tone.

### 2/5 — Eye roll

*2025-03-29*

First off, the disclaimer about not being racist, because Lovecraft was a product of his time, wasn’t really necessary. Then the candy crush reference was another eye roll. It’s pretty cringe fora Lovecraft adventure…

### 2/5 — Für kurze Zeit witzig

*2020-07-15*

### 2/5 — I Really Want To Like This, But...

*2020-07-12*

This app has a very nice aesthetic and the story is interesting. But there is absolutely no guidance on how you can stop “reading“ at any time without losing all of your progress. The app prompts that if you return to the main menu you will lose all of your progress in that chapter. But there’s absolutely NO way of knowing when you’ve moved on to a new “chapter.” I wasted a lot of time and became very discouraged working back through material I had already seen. After about 15 or 20 minutes more of “reading,“ I tried to exit AGAIN and lost all my progress from the last half hour. No app support is available… Unless you happen to speak German. I do not.

**Developer response:** We're sorry to hear you lost progress during the game!

The game saves between chapters: You can spot the end of a chapter when the camera zooms out of the book and fades to black - it then zooms back into the book in the following chapter.
If you have any more questions or feedback, you can contact the support email support@assembleteam.com (our mistake, we‘ll add it below with the next update!). Of course we also offer support for English-speaking players.

### 3/5 — Leider kein Sound auf meinem IPad

*2020-07-16*

Mich stört so etwas sehr. Das Spiel selbst jedoch ist top. Deswegen 4 von 5.

## Most praised reviews (7 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Beeindruckend

*2025-08-17*

### 5/5 — This is a certified Third Oath of Dagon moment

*2022-01-11*

Went to a beach party at night and had some fish—very filling— and they give it to you raw right on the water. 10/10, would come again.

PS: If you’re thirsty, ask for Hydra, she makes a great sex on the beach. Make sure you give her the tip— I mean a tip. *A tip.*

### 5/5 — Bravi

*2020-11-02*

### 5/5 — Come Innsmouth and find out.

*2020-07-01*

### 5/5 — Can Lovecraft be funny?

*2020-06-28*

Very well done :)

### 5/5 — The ‘pick a previous chapter’ function could be improved for some routes

*2020-06-23*

It certainly has its mix of humor and horror, though I feel like the ‘choose a previous chapter’ function could be improved for some routes. I finished the route that led to the ‘drowned’ ending achievement, but when I tried to go back a little bit on that branch by going to the ‘escape’ chapter, thinking it would go back about a chapter on that route, it instead put me on the escape chapter for a completely different pathway than what I had just finished.

Though I guess it might be a bug since the town center area didn’t show up as an option, which is where I had gone on that path.

### 4/5 — Well made and entertaining but...

*2020-06-29*

It’s my fault for being disappointed. I enjoy the works of Lovecraft and was expecting something more dark and serious from this game. I must have missed the part about comedy in the description when I purchased.

That’s not to say the game isn’t good and funny... it is! But for me it tries too hard to be funny and ends up being a bit silly in places when I wanted a more serious story. As I said, my fault for my expectations and subsequent disappointment.

The idea of achievements based on what ending you get is great and replay value is up there. Unlocking areas on the map is also a nice touch. I will definitely play some more to take other paths and see what outcomes I can find.

It is well written (apart from the overly silly bits that don’t appeal to me) and has some good eerie music. Gameplay is easy to handle as it’s just tapping to make choices. Seemingly safe and sensible choices tend to go in completely the opposite direction of what you intended, which is both infuriating and hilarious at the same time.

All in all, it’s definitely a game I’d recommend for fans of interactive stories, just don’t expect darkness on the level of the Lovecraft stories or the Call of Cthulhu games.
