The sweeping is very limited. The velocity is really hard to gauge. You get one chance to make a tilt to one side or the other to get a “curl“ but after that, it is set it and forget it, there’s no way to make any corrections with sweeping. Like a 5 year old created this. Don’t waste your time. ### 4/5 — The Last Rock rocks! *2025-04-14* I live next door to an ice rink and curl every week. This app captures the experience nicely. Fun to play and it is giving me valuable experience in deciding on the best way to play each shot. The fast forward button is a nice addition if you don’t want to wait in real time for the rock to reach its destination. One change I would like to see would be an actual curling scoreboard always visible at the top or bottom of the screen. One complaint is that on my iPad it is easy to throw the rock and have time to press the direction of curl buttons, but with the much smaller screen on my iPhone, when I’m trying to throw hard (by swiping my finger up quickly) it is difficult to press the curling buttons before the rock has passed the hog line, leading to a lot of “No handle” calls. Well worth the price. ### 2/5 — Hard to rate *2024-04-18* One player using a cheating app and playing every human vs human game has killed interest for everybody. Wish the creator would address this, because the game is terrible now as a result. Forfeit 90% of games before they start because you’re playing against a cheat. The hard computer mode is a bit off and not worth playing after a short while as it’s not very competitive. Game arrow covers just inside the hog line which hides long guards, and graphics cover the wings making aim a problem. The mechanics of the game itself aren’t bad, but not at all managed or improved in any sense by the creator. Many improvements would be so simple. Some reviews mention the lack of instructions, which is a fair criticism. But if you visit the developer's web site you will find instructions and tutorials. Checking those out will help with the initial process of getting used to the controls which does take some practice. Here are some hints to expedite your enjoyment: 1. Swipe up from your rock to throw it, and it's the speed of your swipe that determines the speed of the rock. 2. Learn to read the "speedometer" on the screen. You can't make a good shot without it. It tells you how far your rock is going to go. Practice with different throw speeds and how they read on the speedometer and where the rock ends up. 3. To continually sweep you just need to hold your finger down in front of the rock. No need to repeatedly tap or rub. If you sweep the whole way you can greatly increase the speed (and thus distance) of your stone, and you'll see this represented on the speedometer as well. 4. The only way to control the amount of curl is to control the weight (speed) either with your initial throw or by sweeping. Learn to do it! With those three tips you can quickly learn to control your rocks. Some reviews complain that's it's not a good game and all of us who love it must be bots. Those people haven't taken the time to learn about the controls or perhaps even basic curling concepts. So my review this time is to just mention that this game was made by one of the best, most responsive development teams I’ve encountered. I do have one question though. When I play against another player, it seems to match me with the same player every time. Is there only one other real person out there to play against, is that player a bot? Seems weird that it matches me with them even when I’m currently in a game with them. About player matching, this UI and the matching algorithm is entirely controlled by Apple through Game Center. I suspect it is simply that a player has queued up a bunch of match requests. But can’t see the score of the game *2022-11-23* It is hard to see the score of the game because the writing is white and the background is mostly white. The app used to have black writing so it was easier to see it. The white score board happens when you are in a vs game and against the computer and also in the competition shots. It cheats badly! Anyone who has either curled for real, like I have for 59 years, and anyone who knows how to curl and okays your game will agree with me. The Hard level is quite challenging and throws highly accurate shots but I promise it does not cheat by changing the ice or otherwise breaking the physics :-). The rock travels with a curve/curl which is most pronounced at the end of its run. Curl direction (left/right) is set immediately after releasing the rock by twisting the phone or tapping the curl icon at the top middle of the screen. The distance the rock travels can be fine tuned by sweeping - the red/yellow/green dial in the upper right side corresponds to where in the end the rock will land - early green is in the guard area and late green area is around the button. Red is too short or a takeout shot. I don't have any control over who gets matched to who, aside from having 2 pools: for casual and frequent players. If you have more than 5 games ongoing, the next match will be with the frequent pool. Perhaps there are more people in the casual pool? I don't have access to any statistics from Apple on Game Center games usage, but hopefully you will be able to find more opponents in one of the 2 pools. Also, the turn timing out should swing back and forth. If your opponent times out after 16 hours (or whatever it actually is), you now have 16 hours to respond.
