But paying subscribers frequently hit the site’s paywall when clicking on feature stories. At least once a week I will try to read a news item, only to be told that I must be a subscriber in order to view it. I already am. For twenty-five bucks a month, I expect better. But where is the Weather? Even before and during a major weather event, you have to go through the search function and use language from other news sources to find any reporting on the current event, and often nothing shows up or only old stuff. Why isn’t there a Section called WEATHER? Even if it only has one article a day in it, at least you could find it, and it would be current. Dumb. ### 1/5 — Beyond Minnesota Nice to Minnesota Idiocy. *2026-01-05, version 4.7* I subscribe only for the sports, comics and obituaries. This is the most ridiculously liberal news outlet in the Midwest, but it caters beautifully to your ridiculously ignorant liberal readership Which is why I moved to rural Wisconsin. Whatever happened to Fritz Mondale, Hubert Humphrey and Orville Freeman? ### 2/5 — Want to like it but… *2026-01-05, version 4.7* Great journalism, bad app. For many articles, the Star Tribune app just opens up a iOS web window containing the article. Unfortunately this window doesn’t know whether you’re a subscriber or not so to use the app you have to re-login to your Star Tribune subscription - or else you hit the pay wall. Often, though inexplicably, the login button there doesn’t work meaning even paying subscribers who go through the effort of re-authenticating multiple times a day, you still can’t see the article. At this point, I just use the browser version of the site - it at least remembers that I’m a logged in and a subscriber. ### 3/5 — Good, but *2026-01-05, version 4.7* Two quirks that really detract from this app. First, there are times when I need to stop reading an article and simply allow my iPad to lock. When I go back to the article, I found that the app has moved me back to the front page section even if i don’t close it. Second, and, most annoying. Does anyone at the Strib monitor the comments to see how frustrating it is for subscribers. ### 2/5 — Dazzling and annoying *2025-12-29, version 4.7* The home page works well. Any entering stories opens windows that don’t stay open and are fairly full of ads. Search function is almost unusable as it returns wildly unrelated results. My particular peeve is finding horoscopes which is 3 clicks in only to have to repeat each time. ### 1/5 — Left wing liberal bias *2025-12-27, version 4.7* I quit this newspaper years ago because it never reports just the news in a fair and balanced way - and still doesn’t! Topics are still skewed to the left and or reported out of context. Sad! Nothing has changed and this newspaper is probably worse. My wife agrees. The paper is now a pamphlet, no doubt due to its only printing of positive things on the left and negative things about the right. The amount of either is down to a trickle. You could easily double the size of your paper if you just printed the data, the info, the dates and times and just what happened. No paraphrases, no chopped clips, no cherry picking of items from a long speech to manufacture a “gotcha”. Full quotes! And a link to the complete speech or video! About once in every 3 to 6 months I actually read something interesting, new, thought provoking and relevant. Andy Brehm is usually the author. We need new unbiased information to inform us. We need clarity on the issues, not just the woke view. See Dennis Prager for help on the clarity issue. We the electorate need to understand the issues clearly so we can make informed choices when we vote. At this point in time, the Star Tribune is not a serious contributor. This sucks. ### 1/5 — Great Newspaper—Terrible App *2026-05-15, version 4.7* The Star Tribune has been one of America’s great newspapers for decades. Excellent writing. And integrity on reporting… something that’s sorely missed in much of today’s media. But this app is junk. On about half the stories it links to pages that look to be taking you to a generic web browser. And—about half of those—require you to log in again… even though you’re already in the app. And—once you click to log in….. nothing. I’ve written to them and basically, they refuse to fix it. The STrib is a great paper. Want to read the paper on a flight with no wifi? Sorry. Of course, why don’t you just download the eEdition? As soon as your screen is turned off decide to open another app, it’ll delete. Swap to another app while reading an article? No worries, The Star Tribune app will restart. Fun to navigate to your last article! Reading with reliable wifi? Some articles choose to open in an embedded browser requiring one to enter log in info each time. The app itself is designed well and easy to use, it’s highly useful for live reporting stories in instances of serious concern. As a retired international photojournalist, I find their coverage professional, fair, factual, with exceptional photography and well written articles.
