## What is The NESO App?

Energy is the lifeblood of our society and economy and as the National Energy System Operator, we operate the electricity system in real time and plan the future of the gas and electricity networks.

In our role as the operator of the electricity system, we have an ambition to be able to operate GBs electricity network carbon free by 2025.

The NESO app allows you to monitor the generation types that make up your electricity supply and see when the cleanest time to use electricity will be. You can see the carbon impact level of electricity generation, how your region compares to others in GB and be notified when a record towards decarbonisation breaks.

Information on the operation of the gas system can be found in the National Gas app, available on iOS.

We welcome feedback about the app and its content. Please contact us at box.NESO.digital@neso.energy. For details on how we calculate the carbon intensity, please visit carbonintensity.org.uk

## Key features

### 3/5 — Not granular enough

*2025-10-08, version 1.10*

The app only shows end & solar, no mention of Hydro, a major generator in Northern Scotland

### 2/5 — Missing Regional When To Use

*2025-08-12, version 1.10*

I was sent to this app by the WhenToPlugIn app, which has now shut down. Unfortunately this app does not replace it, since it doesn’t show the next best times to use electricity based on regional predictions or current data - only national.

### 3/5 — Interesting - but records not updated???

*2025-03-31, version 1.8*

Interesting app.
But please check the records are updated correctly? Solar records is from’23. Grid data suggests solar output exceeded that level multiple times in March ‘25.

### 1/5 — Water ?

*2025-02-01, version 1.8*

Colour palette somewhat better now thanks BUT what happened to water as a source ? I never see any hydro on the grid anywhere using this app. Surely that can’t be right ?!

### 1/5 — Serious errors

*2024-12-18, version 1.8*

What???? 10971 MW is equivalent to 219,400 5W lightbulbs????

More like 2,194,200,000 5W lightbulbs!!!!

### 3/5 — Used to be good but …

*2024-12-12, version 1.8*

… added another star as the colour scheme is slightly improved but it’s still not great.

### 2/5 — Colours confusing

*2024-11-30, version 1.7*

I used to love this app. Still do; in principle. But the latest colour change makes it very hard, at a glance, to see which energy source is which. Please change it back. Or at least make the colours more discernible. Thank you.

### 2/5 — Text basically impossible to read!

*2024-11-24, version 1.7*

Impossible to read! Since the recent update it’s even more difficult or impossible to read the small text - the colours are also irrelevant. Please make it better than before, not worse!

### 2/5 — Please change the colours

*2024-11-14, version 1.7*

I get that you are using corporate colours, but it is really hard to differentiate the gas from wind etc. please change the colours to something more logical and differentiated.

### 3/5 — For the Love of God change the colours back!

*2024-11-02, version 1.7*

I use this App to judge the best time to use electricity and also charge my Hybrid car for minimum environmental impact.
Since the latest App update they have made it incredibly difficult to discern which source of Electricity is from what source as the colours chosen are completely illogical. Light purple for Gas, Dark purple for Wind!? So is wind more polluting that Gas? That’s what the colours say to me! Imports are Blue, water isn’t!? Solar is dark blue? Why not yellow or orange? Make the colours represent either reality or their Eco impact. Black for Biomass, Brown for Gas, blue for water, green for wind, yellow for solar, Orange or Purple for imports etc. I shouldn’t have to decode the App before I use it to decide if it is a good time to use green electricity. Help us help you!
What I would really like to see is the daily/weekly/monthly running totals for each kind of electricity production technique with a running total for the CO2 produced to generate the electricity.
I want to be able to see and compare how much each individual type (wind/solar/water/nuclear/gas etc) has produced and what CO2 it has cost us. Ideally by country area but defo in total per country. Live data on this would be excellent as well. A display of total electricity demand Vs system provided would be an interesting readout.
