## What is The Outdoors App?

Plan your next adventure.

The Outdoors App is a guide to public land in the United States — trails, parks, campgrounds and lakes — built for the moment you are standing at a trailhead with one bar of signal.

FIND SOMEWHERE TO GO Browse thousands of trails, national and state parks, campgrounds and water bodies. Filter by length, elevation gain, difficulty, dogs allowed, accessibility, amenities and more. Sort by distance and see what is genuinely near you.

MAPS THAT WORK WITHOUT SIGNAL Download map regions and whole trails to your phone before you go. Contour lines, terrain and trail paths stay on your device, so the map still works in the canyon where your phone does not.

RECORD YOUR ROUTE Start a recording at the trailhead and the app tracks your route, distance and elevation — and keeps recording with the phone in your pocket and the screen off. Your recordings stay on your device unless you choose to save them.

CAMPGROUNDS IN DETAIL Individual campsites, loops, amenities, seasons and photos. See which sites are reservable and jump straight to booking.

BUILD YOUR OWN MAPS Drop markers, draw areas, add photos and notes, and keep a personal map of the places you care about.

PLAN A TRIP Save places to bookmarks, group them into trips, and check the forecast for where you are actually going.

BUILT TO BE READ OUTSIDE High-contrast type and a dark mode that respects your battery. Designed to be legible in daylight on a dimmed screen at arm's length.

Location is used to show what is nearby and to centre the map. Decline it and the app still works. Background location is used only while a recording you started is running.

No ads. No tracking. We do not sell your data.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.1.3 — 2026-09-19

Campgrounds that showed "This campground did not load" now open.

Trail, campground and campsite pages put what you came to do at the top: directions, reserve, bookmark, download for offline and share, all on the first screen.

Download a trail or campground before you lose signal, and the page tells you exactly what is on your phone. An update that does not finish no longer touches the copy you already saved.

Take any trail with you as a GPX, KML, GeoJSON or TCX file, for a GPS unit, a Garmin watch or another mapping app.

Bookmark individual campsites, and open them again from Saved.

Signing in brings you back to the page you were on.

Only a map's owner can edit it.

### 1.1.2 — 2026-09-19

The photograph on each map result now reaches the edge of its card, both in the strip along the bottom of the map and on the card that opens when you tap a pin. It is bigger, and it is the part that tells you which place you are looking at.

Shared maps now have tighter permission checks.

### 1.1.1 — 2026-09-17

**A FIX FOR 1.1.0**
The last update could not reach the internet at all. Search came back empty, trails and campgrounds would not load, and every screen said you were offline whether or not you had signal. That is fixed — everything that needs a connection works again.

If you updated to 1.1.0 and the app looked broken, it was, and this is the repair. Nothing you saved to your phone was lost.

### 1.1.0 — 2026-09-17

RECORD YOUR HIKE
Start a recording from any trail and your track is drawn as you walk. It keeps running with the phone in your pocket, and if the app is closed it picks up where it left off. Export a finished walk as GPX, GeoJSON or KML.

FOLLOW THE TRAIL YOU CAME FOR
Record from a trail page and it tells you how far along you are, how much distance and climb are left, and what the next waypoint is — and says so if you have left the route.

SAVE A WHOLE TRAIL, NOT JUST A MAP
The map, the photos, the description and the GPX all come with you. The map is cut to follow the trail's shape rather than a box around it, so the detail is where you are actually walking.

SAVE A CAMPGROUND
Every individual site, fee, amenity and photo, on the phone before you drive out of signal.

ONE PLACE FOR WHAT YOU HAVE DOWNLOADED
Downloads shows your saved trails, campgrounds and map areas together, with what each one is costing you in storage — measured on the phone, not estimated.

AND IT TELLS YOU THE TRUTH
A download that did not finish says so, and says which part is missing, instead of showing you a map with holes in it at the trailhead. Saved copies show when they were saved, so you know whether the fees and closures you are reading are still current.
