## What is The Society of Crossed Words?

There is a society for people who suspect they might love cryptic crosswords, if only someone would explain the rules. This is it.

THE DAILY CROSSING
Two bite-sized cryptic clues each day, crossed at a shared letter. Solve the first and it hands a letter to the second: the small kindness the Society is named for. Not a grid, not an hour of your life: two elegant little puzzles you can solve with your tea. Gentle hints wait behind a button, and stuck is a place, not a verdict. Solve or reveal, every clue ends with its full workings: definition, indicator, wordplay, answer. Do this daily and the code cracks itself.

LEARN THE NINE TRICKS
A ten-chapter course teaches cryptic solving through play. Chapter One shows you the secret (every clue is two puzzles pointing at one answer) and hands you a real clue to solve. The rest cover anagrams, hidden words, charades, containers, reversals, homophones, double definitions, cryptic definitions and deletions. No prior knowledge expected. Nobody is talked down to.

THE PARLOUR
Solve to the Society's own chamber music: twelve original pieces, revealed one per day as you return, collected as the record Society of Crossed Words, Volume One. Streaks, a passport stamp for every solve, practice rooms for each trick, and an archive of every past puzzle.

A CIVILISED ARRANGEMENT
No adverts. No accounts. No tracking of any kind. Your progress lives on your device and nowhere else. Works offline, on the train, where all the best solving happens. Bright parlour by day, sleeper-carriage dark mode by night. At home on iPhone and iPad.

MEMBERSHIP
The daily crossing, its hints and explanations, streaks, Chapter One and the music cost nothing, for ever. Full Membership opens the rest of the library: the complete course, all nine practice rooms and the full archive.

Annual: £14.99 per year (about £1.25 a month)
Monthly: £1.99 per month
Founding Member: £29.99 once, for ever

### 5/5 — Love it

My new favourite word game!

### 5/5 — Daily fun!

*2026-08-07*

I’ve been really enjoying this app so far. The puzzles are well thought out and strike a nice balance between being challenging and fun. One thing I really appreciate is the hints they’re genuinely helpful without just giving the answer away, so you still get the satisfaction of figuring things out yourself. The app is easy to use, runs smoothly, and has a clean, uncluttered design. It’s quickly become one of my favourite ways to unwind for a few minutes each day. Definitely worth downloading.

### 5/5 — Great app

*2026-08-07*

It’s a lot of fun, good balance between a challenge but not impossible to solve

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.0.5 — 2026-08-27

The long table has been reset.

Across and Down now take equal places, while the board, hints and working
margin keep their composure in portrait, landscape and Split View. Practice,
Learn, Archive and Progress have each been given a room of their own.

### 1.0.4 — 2026-08-23

The register has found its ink.

Today now keeps its red outline while showing the true result beneath it: teal for solved, mustard for revealed. The crossing and its seven-day record agree again.

### 1.0.3 — 2026-08-22

The long table is laid.

Crossed Words now belongs properly on iPad. The daily crossing has a roomier board, both clues remain in view, and there is a working margin for Pencil or finger. Portrait, landscape and Split View each have their own considered arrangement. The week just gone now records every solved or revealed day clearly.

### 1.0.2 — 2026-08-13

The gramophone is mended.

The parlour music fell silent for some members after the engineers' last visit. It plays again, and one tap of the speaker brings it back whenever the room is quiet. The keyboard has also learnt its manners: tap anywhere on the paper and it steps aside instead of standing in front of the clue. And the little A and D boxes now sit level with their clues, as they always should have.

### 1.0.1 — 2026-08-10

The parlour tidies up after itself.

Put the Society away and the music now stops properly, leaving nothing behind on your lock screen. The pieces also loop cleanly, as they were always meant to, and the gramophone now respects your phone's silent switch.
