This is the part that is hard to get right. This is the part that makes the difference between actual security and insecurity. Claiming “military-grade” (or “industry standard” ;-) encryption is meaningless. Even claiming “256-bit AES encryption”, in itself is not very meaningful. Example: Claiming “military-grade” encryption and subsequently simply hashing a master passcode - e.g. using SHA, or MD5 is NOT good. What ís good is to use a proper key derivation algorithm such as PBKDF2, scrypt or bcrypt. Another example: AES is better than older algorithms such as Blowfish, Twofish or 3DES. But even for AES: an app that does not combine encryption with authentication... is doing it wrong. Currently there is some consensus that the best construct is to first encrypt a message and then calculate a message-authentication code, instead of the other way around. These things matter. ◆ ◆ ◆ The Vault uses PBKDF2 key derivation with an HMAC-SHA512 PRF, and HMAC-SHA256 Encrypt-then-MAC authenticated 256-bit AES encryption, using CommonCrypto functionality only. All cipher and MAC worker keys, as well as all salts and IVs, are purely random data. Keys and IVs are never reused. Each singular piece of data is encrypted with a unique random encryption key, and authenticated with a unique random HMAC key. I have tried several other well known managers and they honestly were not as good. Had a slight hitch using one feature a few days ago, the response was within 24 hours and fixed the problem (my error not the app). Totally satisfied with and unreservedly recommend The Vault. ### 1/5 — Major New Bug *2026-03-01* After many years of excellent use, I am now experiencing a major bug. The Vault is repeatedly disappearing immediately after I enter my passcode. It’s happened many times already - after every attempt. Powering my iPhone 16 off and on did not fix the problem. Upgrading from iOS 26.2 to iOS 26.3 also did not fix the problem. Please fix this as soon as possible as I have a lot of important information that I cannot now access - but urgently need to. **Developer response:** Hi, please contact support via email and we’ll help you resolve the issue: support at TheVault-app dot com ### 2/5 — Now Crashes on Phone *2026-02-28, version 8.5.1* The Vault for years was my go-to place for easily, on my iPhone and iPad, keeping up with numbers, passwords, codes and other important bits of information. The app has many helpful features. Now, the app crashes on my phone, upon entry of the PIN. Fortunately it still works on the iPad. Unfortunately I can’t easily carry the big iPad everywhere. If this is not resolved, I will have to migrate.
