### 4/5 — Needs update for iPhone X

*2020-06-14, version 4.0*

It’s great, but would be nice if the layout worked for “new” phones.

### 4/5 — Great educational tool

*2019-01-04, version 4.0*

While the app is somewhat prone to crashing on occasion, it’s a great educational tool for showing how close or distant two organism’s common ancestor is. Despite not being a teacher or officially a biology major myself (yet), I’ve been able to use this app to teach friends about relations between organisms.

### 4/5 — Love it!

*2011-12-02, version 3.0*

I have been using it to imagine the different geologic eras. Lots of fun. Just be aware that the word "trout" seems to crash it. Other salmonidae work though.

### 4/5 — Of practical value to understand evolutionary relationships

*2011-11-17, version 3.0*

Excellent source of information regarding taxonomic relationships and last-common ancestor (LCA). Useful for preparing lectures when I want to check on age of various species of birds, dinosaurs, etc. The online linkages to taxonomics at NCBI is very helpful.
Fun to check on LCA of different birds when out in the field, though some of the ages of LCA seemed surprising to me.
I hope that they will also provide a version that is designed for display on iPad2.
Would be helpful if they also listed the organism they suggest as the LCA.
Price is unbeatable (free!).

### 4/5 — Cool toy

*2011-07-13, version 1.0*

It comes in handy when you're bored with friends and want to place bets on what creatures are more closely related. If I were a biologist it would mean more; not really for the everyman. Still cool and great idea

### 4/5 — Excellent

*2011-02-13, version 1.0*

An excellent utility. Wouldn't it just be typical if some creationist half-wit tried to get it banned from the App Store?

### 4/5 — Does just what it says

*2010-10-02, version 0*

If it improves this may be my favourite app

### 4/5 — Interesting

*2010-09-27, version 0*

Originally didn't work however works fine now. Interesting app that compiles results from research papers regarding the dates of common ancestors. The amount of species seems understandably small however there is usually a representative species for most types of organisms.

### 4/5 — Good first version

*2010-09-27, version 0*

Great idea and a nice start to this app. But it needs a user manual so non-scientists can use it.

### 3/5 — Good start

*2010-09-25, version 0*

I really love the idea of this app. Unfortunately, it seems to have been made by scientists for scientists. It would be great to see the developers implement some sort of categorical browsing system to make the whole thing more approachable.

### 1/5 — Errors

*2010-09-23, version 0*

On 4.1: I get the message "Error 998: malformed result" whatever I enter. Irritating.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Doesn't work anymore.

*2026-04-23, version 4.0*

This app no longer works. Please update.

### 1/5 — Server error

*2025-10-24, version 4.0*

Can’t search anything

### 1/5 — Why can’t I check on the diff between...

*2018-08-19, version 4.0*

Why can’t I check on the diff between ‘dogs and cats’, or humans and chimpanzees’?

### 1/5 — Crashes instantly

*2017-09-15, version 4.0*

This app used to be great! I used it on an old iPad 2. I just attempted to use it on the iPad Pro 9" and it cannot even open: just crashes instantly. Please fix it so I can use it with teaching my life science classes...

### 1/5 — Crashes, have to reinstall!

*2015-05-04, version 3.1*

Please fix!
If I misspell one of search terms then app shuts down. Will not refresh & must delete & reinstall.
Very lovely on the net! Please fix this glitch in the app!
Have iPhone 6+, with all updates.

### 1/5 — Crashes when I try to see the evolutionary relationship between Taxon A and Taxon B

*2015-03-04, version 3.1*

I recently went of science daily to learn about the new TimeTree of Life Initiative, and I found your app related to this. Unfortunately, whenever I try and see the evolutionary relationship between any two species, the app attempts to calculate and then freezes. Don't get me wrong, I think the app is a great idea, but it needs work

### 1/5 — Timetree

*2011-02-27, version 1.0*

Not worth downloading

### 1/5 — Malformed result

*2010-09-23, version 0*

No matter what I enter the search comes up with the same error, "malformed result". I wish I could like the app, it's an awesome concept, but its not working at all.

### 1/5 — Broken service

*2010-09-23, version 0*

I was excited about this app when I heard about it, I love the idea. Sadly, no matter what I try to compare it comes back with a "998: malformed message" (or something like that) error.

It's a neat idea. Too bad it doesn't work.

### 1/5 — Doesn't work

*2010-09-23, version 0*

Gives error message

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great tool to have on smart phone

*2022-04-23, version 4.0*

I appreciate this evidence-based app for helping me to understand the time of divergence of two taxa. For instance, I just found out today that anteaters and aardvarks likely split evolutionarily about 100 million years ago! Not everyone wonders about this, but for those who do, this app is a great reference.

### 5/5 — cool app!!

*2015-10-27, version 4.0*

using this app has been helpful.

### 5/5 — Perfect

*2012-03-30*

Very simple to use, just type the names of the two organisms, and discover the time of last common ancestor according to current research. It will even link to the that research.

### 5/5 — Awesome work!!!!

*2011-08-09, version 1.0*

I tried some of the queries people stated had issues but they worked for me. For example you can look up when a tiger and lion split off in history. This is all around a fun app to play with.
Great work!!!

### 5/5 — Excellent app

*2011-06-18, version 1.0*

Worked perfectly for me!

### 5/5 — Amazing!

*2011-03-20, version 1.0*

I am an anthropologist and this app is so interesting and useful. A little user unfriendly until you know it better but an amazing app for being free. Evolution enthusiasts should get this app!!!

### 5/5 — Great reference

*2011-03-14, version 1.0*

Very easy to use. Accurate as far as I checked. I wonder if they update as more work gets published all the time and if so how often?
Great work guys! Thank you!

### 5/5 — Sweeeeewt

*2010-12-02, version 0*

Sweet stuff my dad knows the guy who made it and it's sweet

### 5/5 — Excellent!

*2010-09-24, version 0*

Quite an incredible and comprehensive application.
Works perfectly for me, and I now know humans and fleas shared a common ancestor 981.1 m.y.a. !

### 5/5 — Keep up the good work

*2010-09-22, version 0*

A good scientific app. Thanks
