About

No ads. No subscription. No account. No tracking. Works offline. Tipping is a local habit, and nobody grows up knowing all of them. This app is for the moment the bill arrives in a country that is not yours: pay the right amount where tipping is expected, and nothing where it is not. A TIPPING GUIDE IN YOUR OWN LANGUAGE The guide is written in 12 languages, including Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, Spanish, French and Arabic. Each of the 35 countries is marked one of three ways: tipping is expected, it is optional, or it is not expected. From there you get the usual range for a restaurant, and for some countries a breakdown of casual dining, fine dining, a bar or cafe, and a taxi, with short notes on local habits such as cash being preferred or a service charge that may already be on the bill. One tap sends the suggested rate into the calculator. TWO CURRENCIES AT ONCE Enter the bill in the currency you are paying in and read the total in your home currency on the same screen. 26 currencies are supported. Rates refresh once a day and stay on your device, so the last one still works with no signal, and each rate shows when it was last updated. When none is available the app shows a dash instead of a number, rather than inventing one. THE CALCULATOR - 15, 18, 20 and 25 percent presets, or any percentage you type - Split evenly between 1 and 50 people, or by item, with tax and tip shared in proportion - Round up, to the nearest, or down, by a unit you choose, with the effective tip rate shown - Tip on the pre-tax amount for the US and Canada: enter the tax and the tip is based on the subtotal - One-tap copy, dark mode, haptic feedback, Siri and Shortcuts - Optimized for iPhone Duo: on the large unfolded display, inputs and results sit side by side (the same on any iPhone turned sideways) - Share a country's tipping norms as one image, and keep a log of payments with totals in your home currency - Scan a receipt for the total and tax, with a warning if service is already included. Show staff key phrases in 20 languages, or play them aloud, offline - Home Screen and Lock Screen widget with the tip norm for the country you're in. It switches by time zone, with no location access - Check the terminal's 20, 25 and 30% against the pre-tax amount and local norms, or work back from a round total or budget PRIVACY AND PRICE Nothing you type leaves your device. The only network request is the daily rate lookup. Free, no in-app purchase, made by one developer. If the guide is wrong about a country you know well, write to me and I will fix it. Exchange rates are for reference and are not intended for financial transactions. Tipping customs vary by region and venue, so treat the guide as a starting point rather than a rule. ◆ TIPPING AT A GLANCE: 35 COUNTRIES AND REGIONS USA: Expected / Casual 15–20%, Fine dining 20–25%, Bar & café $1–2, Taxi 15–20% Canada: Expected / Casual 15–20%, Fine dining 18–22%, Taxi 10–15% Mexico: Expected / 10–15% United Kingdom: Optional / Restaurant 10–15%, Taxi 10%* France: Optional / Round up* Germany: Optional / Restaurant 5–10%, Taxi round up Italy: Optional / 5–10%* Spain: Optional / 5–10% Switzerland: Optional / 5–10%* Netherlands: Optional / 5–10% Austria: Optional / Restaurant 5–10%, Taxi 10% Portugal: Optional / 5–10% Ireland: Optional / Restaurant 10–15%, Taxi 10%* Greece: Optional / 5–10% Sweden: Optional / 5–10%* Norway: Optional / 5–10% Denmark: Optional / Round up* Japan: Not expected South Korea: Not expected China: Not expected Taiwan: Not expected* Hong Kong: Optional / Round up* Singapore: Not expected* Thailand: Optional / 5–10% Vietnam: Optional / 5–10% India: Optional / 10–15%* Indonesia: Optional / 5–10%* Philippines: Optional / 5–10%* Malaysia: Not expected* UAE: Optional / 10–15%* Saudi Arabia: Optional / 10–15%* Australia: Optional / 10% New Zealand: Optional / 10% Brazil: Optional / Round up* Argentina: Optional / 10% *Service charge often included

Sources for the tipping guide Each country now lists the pages we checked, such as official tourism boards. Tap one to open it in Safari. Based on them, we updated France and Denmark (round up), taxis in Germany (round up), India (10–15%) and US food delivery (10–15%). Export your payment log as CSV Use the share button in the Payment Log to export a CSV file you can open in any spreadsheet app, handy for settling up after a trip. Philippines and Malaysia The tipping guide now covers 35 countries and regions, with Philippine peso and Malaysian ringgit conversion, Malay phrase cards, and automatic suggestions when you arrive. US tips beyond restaurants Added guidance for hotel housekeeping (per night), hair salons and spas, and food delivery. Check the card terminal's tip options When the terminal offers 20%, 25% or 30%, enter those numbers to see what you'd really pay, what that is as a share of the pre-tax amount, and whether it's above or below what's normal in that country. If you want an exact tip, it tells you the amount to enter under “Custom”. Work back from an amount Want to pay a round $95? Enter it to see what tip percentage that is, and use it in the calculator. Or enter your budget to see how big a bill still fits once the tip is added.
