### 4/5 — Great for learning Maori but annoying keyboard

*2023-09-11, version 5.1.0*

I love this app. It’s perfectly structured to learn Maori, however the keyboard really needs to be improved a bit. When typing you will often miss keys without realising and have to backspace or fiddle around to get cursor in correct place to fix mistakes, macrons and spaces.

This could be fixed by having the keyboard react in the same way the average phone keyboard does, where you can see the letter pop up above your finger as you press it, or have the space bar turn grey while pressing it, even audible clacking sounds as you type so you know you pressed the key.

So many times you think you pressed the macron key but didn’t and have to go back and fix everything.

Perhaps when you press the macron key, the keyboard should change colour or something so you can clearly see it’s on (or even just the letters that have macrons). Not to mention the subtle lag it takes to switch to macrons when you press the button.

Another alternative could be holding down a key to bring up the macron version of it.

Either way I would 5 star this app if not for the keyboard. Perfect app for learning Maori, but the keyboard is annoying. Would definitely 5 star if the keyboard was fixed.

### 4/5 — Love it!

*2022-11-15, version 5.1.0*

So far am loving this app for the content and learning.
But like a lot of people have said the keyboard is a bit annoying.
I’d suggest making the check button a little smaller and making space a bit larger. Maybe switching the macron button and the capital button around as well. And maybe making a slight vibrate when hitting the keys or enlarging as typing like on a apple keyboard.

### 3/5 — Needs fixing

*2022-11-11, version 5.1.0*

Loved this app. Really helped me improve my te reo but now it doesn’t work at all, please update!

### 4/5 — Great Resource

*2022-02-05, version 5.1.0*

I would give this app 5 stars, because it is the best Te Rep resource I have found, but the keyboard drives me absolutely insane. The keyboard functionality has me missing button clicks, particularly the spacebar. Luckily this app redeems itself with great grammar lessons.

### 3/5 — Great concept but app has issues

*2021-09-20, version 5.1.0*

When the app is functioning it’s great but I’m having a few problems with its functionality on iPhone which is disappointing ☹️

### 4/5 — Good, suggestions for future

*2021-04-07, version 5.0.0*

I like how I have to write the words as well as say it. There is quite a significant delay (10 seconds +) between tapping the speaker and the voice playing the pronunciation, not sure if that’s a glitch or that my iPad is old lol. Would like it to automatically play the sound. Would also like to have to copy incorrect answers, could be good to also have a picture and/or a full sentence (perhaps with mixed English words at lower levels, like “te wahini played with te kuri” (hope I got that right!) to help me start seeing how to use words in more regular conversation. The more ways to process new things the quicker we learn it! I am really enjoying learning Te Reo.

### 4/5 — Excellent

*2020-07-17, version 4.0.4*

One thing there is no option of adding a question mark so im getting some sentences wrong only because of no question mark.

### 3/5 — Keyboard font too tiny

*2020-06-07, version 4.0.4*

This is a fun app but keyboard font is too small. Please make larger

### 3/5 — Mistakes

*2020-02-09, version 3.1.0*

Some words like wahine are sometimes correct as wahine and sometimes wāhine or sometimes wahinē and gets very confusing.
It allows you to move onto the next section when you get questions wrong and you have to exit to map to then go back and try again. You should not be able to continue until you get it correct a couple times to ensure you actually know the word

### 3/5 — Silent app

*2020-02-07, version 3.1.0*

The kōrero button doesn’t work. iPhone 6s

### 2/5 — No sound

*2020-01-01, version 3.1.0*

Good concept. I can now spell all the words! But I can't hear them at all on the app an so I am probably saying them all wrong?
Fix the glitch please

### 4/5 — Fast to start, but consolidateso

*2019-08-21, version 3.1.0*

Concept is great but it introduces many new words before ensuring you have the previous ones learnt. However, it does consolidate further down the line.
Would be nice if the Māori word was accompanied by a picture, and to be forced to write the word in order to try learn it earlier (in later lessons the word needed to learn repeats 2 words later).
Very happy to be learning te reo Māori.

### 3/5 — Not very friendly

*2019-03-14, version 3.0.1*

Content seems ok if I ever get far enough. Frustrating keyboard design and lag, and you to make corrections by deleting letters one by one. You are also expected to enter words you haven’t yet been introduced to and if you tap the help button you get moved on to the next question afterwards! All of which is quite discouraging. Come on guys. You’ve almost made a decent app - please polish it!

### 3/5 — Fantastic resource

*2019-02-17, version 3.0.1*

Great resouse, sound not working with the latest update (17/2/19).

### 4/5 — Great content but a bit glitchy

*2019-01-07, version 2.1.2*

This is a great app for revising core content. I have found it a bit glitchy, especially when trying to go back to map and it goes up the page but there’s no ‘path’. You seem to have to close app and re-open.

### 4/5 — Excellent app!

*2019-01-03, version 2.1.1*

I am really enjoying the app, great learning structure.

I am finding on level 5 it's freezing up on me however. I've rebooted my phone, reinstalled the app and worked my way back up to level 5 and it has frozen again.

Hopefully you can fix this and I can continue!

Kia ora,
Dyani

### 3/5 — Freezes on level 5

*2018-12-31, version 2.1.1*

Hi I’ve really enjoyed this app but it freezes on level 5 which is very disappointing especially since there’s a review on here from two years ago that says the same thing.... any chance the developers will be fixing it anytime soon?

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Macron

*2022-04-14, version 5.1.0*

You seem to be disinterested in getting back are you up for improving your apps

### 1/5 — meh

*2022-02-15, version 5.1.0*

a very limited app, focusing on vocabulary largely without context - not a particularly good way to learn a language, and decidedly inferior to both duolingo (which was supposed to have added māori by now but hasn’t) and the pimsleur method (which i used for conversational russian to great success).

for better instruction at your own pace, check out the tōku reo website.

### 1/5 — Tipu

*2019-11-07, version 3.1.0*

I down loaded the App, and it didn’t matter what I clicked on it wouldn’t work and I have a very good apple phone with plenty of speed and storage. I deleted it. There was also no where that gave you any ideas of how to use it.

### 1/5 — Does not work properly

*2019-08-04, version 3.1.0*

There is no sound produced so I cannot hear the correct pronunciation. I uninstalled this App about 60 seconds after trying it

### 1/5 — Hate it

*2018-10-20, version 1.4.5*

No sound at all

### 1/5 — Not for me

*2018-07-04, version 1.4.4*

I’m tried using this app but I have no idea how to use it. I don’t know Maori so I was hoping to learn it, it feels like this app is better suited for those who already know Maori but want to brush up on their skills.

### 1/5 — Not for beginners.

*2018-02-28, version 1.4.0*

Cool app, has much potential but UI for keyboarding is difficult, and you need to be quite advanced to know things straight off. Would have been helpful to kick off for beginners.
No options when you’re wanting to learn.

### 1/5 — No sound

*2017-04-02, version 1.1.0*

Waste of time with no sound

### 1/5 — Tipu

*2016-09-20, version 1.1.0*

Don't even bother. Would not even open. Stuck on front screen

### 2/5 — Great concept, bad app

*2020-08-06, version 4.0.4*

Great concept for the game, super cute and had the potential to learn quite fast- pronunciation/ grammar, however the app is super glitchy. I’ve lost access to my progress multiple times and have to keep going through the basics, before it’ll reset again...
Could be awesome with a few upgrades

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — VoiceOver/accessibility compatibility

*2023-08-07, version 5.1.0*

Kia ora, our family has used this app for a long time, and recommend it to everybody… up until the last update. Everything worked very well with VoiceOver enabled on iOS, but since updating, I cannot use the app at all, with VoiceOver turned on… Please help.

### 5/5 — Really excellent

*2022-12-31, version 5.1.0*

It’s good as a language app in and of itself, I haven’t tried any other apps for Te Reo Māori but the interface is better than Duolingo. Despite not having all the stars and trophies that supposedly “gamify” learning, I found this app plenty addicting.

The only wish I could have is that the letters on the keyboard were a bit bigger! There’s room on the keys for them to be. Please have aroha on my old eyes!

### 5/5 — Best app to learn Te Reo Maori at the moment.

*2021-07-17, version 5.1.0*

You’ll soon forgive the kind of glitchy interface as this app teaches you more in one day than any other Maori app in weeks. Some software optimization would be appreciated, but nevertheless, great job, and please keep up the good work, thanks for making this app available.

Suggestion to the creators of the app:

I’m not sure why I know ‘E kimihia ana ngā hōiho - the horses are being sought’ while I don’t know: ‘Thanks’ or ‘How are you?’ or ‘Can I have a glass of water?’
‘Me noho ngā tūru’ - (The chairs should be sat upon) seems like something I should be learning when I already know how to say “Good morning”, “pass me the salt, please”, or “Take care”, or well, anything, that should come up in a normal conversation. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

### 5/5 — Few minor bugs but overall very helpful!

*2020-10-27, version 5.0.0*

Love the app, and have just finished all available lessons. Can’t wait for more. However the lag with the keyboard can get a bit frustrating and in the later lessons it will start a lesson with explaining a concept and then ask you to translate phrases that don’t connect with the example given, it caught me out a few times but not a major fault. Looking forward to new lessons!

### 5/5 — Pet5543

*2020-10-07, version 5.0.0*

As a totally newbie at Te Rea, I was thrilled with this App, and then
For some reason was no longer able to go back and revise.
Had to delete and reload App. Why????? It great giving pronunciation and moving you along slowly, so far the best for real beginners.

### 5/5 — Fabulous resource!

*2019-09-06, version 3.1.0*

Absolutely loving the app! Only thing is I’m still unsure when to use nga and te and why sometimes wahine has a macron but other times it doesn’t!

### 5/5 — Great App - but we need more!

*2019-06-02, version 3.1.0*

Fantastic learning resource but how far away are the next levels? Would be great to see something on negatives, and the ‘n’ and ‘m’ possessives, and maybe a larger vocabulary of nouns verbs and adjectives.

### 5/5 — Really helpful

*2018-08-31, version 1.4.5*

I like the structure of progressing from through the sentence structures, I am using this in conjunction with in person Te Reo lessons and finding this really helpful. One thing that could be a bit better would be when you want to repeat a lesson to have it be ticked for it to go through all the ones you haven’t gotten perfect yet rather than jumping to the most recent lesson

### 5/5 — Miharo !

*2018-05-25, version 1.4.3*

Thoroughly enjoyed using this app, using the keyboard is a bit slow but I got over it. It’s really helpful I love it.

### 5/5 — Really good app

*2017-11-27, version 1.2.0*

Great learning tool. Pity it ends. Looking forward to a next level!
