## What is Tombouctou heritage city?

Welcome to Timbuktu, an ancient city located in northern Mali in West Africa, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This city is a historical treasure, steeped in a rich and fascinating history. Founded in the 5th century, Timbuktu is famous for its pivotal role in spreading Islam and knowledge across West Africa.

One of Timbuktu's architectural gems is the Great Mosque of Djingareyber. Built in 1327, this mosque embodies the beauty of Sudanese earthen architecture, creating a unique atmosphere. The city was once a thriving center of Islamic learning, and the ancient manuscripts preserved there testify to the intellectualism that reigned there. Beyond that, Timbuktu is also renowned for having hosted the Festival au Désert, a cultural and musical event bringing together artists from all backgrounds, unfortunately suspended in 2012 due to circumstances.
